Recently the Marty Center learned that the post sharing Professor Alireza Doostdar’s January Sightings essay, “Witnessing Genocide,” was removed from the Marty Center and Divinity School’s Instagram accounts. The post was removed without our permission or support, or the author’s. We are sharing the post again today, with the same image and language we originally used. The Marty Center was founded on the belief that understanding religion is critical to a functional society. Freedom of research and expression are central to this mission, as well as to democracy more broadly, especially during a time of heightened polarization and distrust. We look forward to continuing to share thought-provoking Sightings essays that showcase diverse perspectives on religion and today’s most pressing issues. ———   This week in Sightings, Alireza Doostdar considers the work of journalists in Gaza and the multiple meanings of witnessing. Join us at 7PM in Ida Noyes Hall for a screening of "Wise Blood," the third film in a new False Preachers Film Series, organized by Hannah Ozmun and co-produced by the Marty Center and @docfilmschicago. John Huston’s "Wise Blood" captures the absurd, grotesque, yet revelatory tenor of Flannery O’Connor’s acclaimed novel. Wild-eyed Hazel Motes (Brad Dourif) becomes a self-proclaimed prophet of the Church Without Christ: “where the blind don’t see and the lame don’t walk and what’s dead stays that way." Motes battles a rival street preacher (Harry Dean Stanton) for souls - including his own. Learn more about the series at martycenter.org. TONIGHT! Join us at 7PM in Ida Noyes Hall for a screening of "The Night of the Hunter," the first film in a new False Preachers Film Series, organized by Hannah Ozmun and co-produced by the Marty Center and @docfilmschicago. In "The Night of the Hunter," a diabolical traveling preacher marries a gullible widow, hoping to pocket the $10,000 hidden away by her late husband. Set in the Depression-era South, "The Night of the Hunter" follows her children as they flee their stepfather by starlight. Well worth it to climb up to Mont-Royal with the family. The view from Chalet du Mont-Royal was wonderful. We also stopped at the Croix du Mont-Royal. The 31-meter-tall cross was erected in 1924 and it commemorates a story of Governor Maisssoneuve who placed a wooden cross on the location after he prayed to the Virgin Mary to save the colony from a flood in 1643. #MontRoyal #history #montrealhistory #prayer #cross #religioninpublic #Montreal
