Just the facts, ma’am in this engaging mix of police procedural and private detective novel. “The Case of the Miami Philanthropist” by author S.N. Bronstein is the first in his “Fairlington Lavender Detective” series. This book reminded me of the 1970s detective show, “Colombo,” because of how the main character, private investigator Fairlington Lavender, uses psychology when speaking with suspects, in order to throw them off guard and do what he wants. Also similar to “Colombo,” much of the crime is revealed early in the book, and then the process begins on how PI Lavender methodically puts the bits of information together to make a strong enough case so that the cops are able to arrest the suspect in question. I found the process fascinating, and clearly, the author has done his research. The book is also easy to understand and enjoyable to read. PI Lavender is a retired cop who splits his time between doing contract background-check work in Virginia, and then flying to Miami Beach, where he has his homebase condo, to do his own PI work. What an interesting life! Lavender is accustomed to Florida weather, so is too cold in Virginia. But the money is good. He has his routine and is grumpy and annoyed about this unexpected murder falling into his lap and disrupting his schedule. It’s absolutely stunning and really draws you in. Chris Patchell does an excellent job at giving us a story with a high level of suspense from start to finish. I love police officer Lacey James. She’s a smart, strong, and determined female lead. Audrey Drummond is such a great character. Very relatable and likeable. It was easy to feel connected to her and follow her tortious journey. I’d like to see her ex-boyfriend in the next book as one of the victims after what he did to her. Just saying. The one thing I don’t like about the story is Lacey and Caleb’s relationship. They need to make a decision. $h!t or get off the pot. But that’s just a personal opinion and doesn’t distract from the story. I did enjoy the strong feelings and tension it gave to the story. This was another unputdownable listen from Chris Patchell! 🎧Cassandra Medcalf was perfectly cast for this role. Her timing, pitch, pace, and tones were spot on. She really brought this story to life. her characterizations were excellent. Between the first audiobook and this one, Cassandra has definitely developed a strong connection to the characters and portrays each with their own uniqueness. She projected every character’s emotions flawlessly. I highly recommend the audiobook version of this book.
