Choose Your Own Book Club is a humorous, book club style podcasts where our librarians/heroes are Abby and Peter. They must be around my age because I have fond memories of just a massive shelf of these at my local library, and no matter how nonsensically they were or how many wells I fell down by turning to page 150 or whatever, I totally loved these books! So Abby and Peter review one of these books per episode, talking about the overarching plot, questionable choices for a YA book--for example, anyone want to be a drug mule?? LMAO, their favorite run through, weirdest endings/subplots, all that stuff. It honestly makes me want to go see if my local library has their own wall, so I can actually do this book club style! Trailer Park, a Podcast Trailer Podcast is a non-fiction podcast which is a little bit of an inside-baseball-type podcast, where hosts @ariellethisandthat and @therealtimvegas present trailers of podcasts, and also give advice on how a good podcast trailer should be, why it's important, how long, style, etc. All good info, and some trailers too. They may be disappointed or intrigued to know I obtain podcast mostly through chaos, and I don't typically listen to trailers unless they're dropped into my feed from existing podcasts, I read the show description. Why, oh why is it -12°F at my house? Even before the wind chill. 😭 And for other pleas for help... Let's talk about Crooked River from the writers of Outliers, Dave Beasley and Casey Wells. Crooked River is a historical fiction, true crime podcast. While the main characters and dialogue are fictionalized, the setting and mystery is true. Set in 1964, Detectives Joe Antonetti and Ed Krauss are revisiting the Cleveland Torso Murder case with retired detective, Alvin Pike, who seems vaguely hostile about the whole thing. The narrative of Alvin Pike is told in flashbacks to the murders and the initial investigation; it's 1934, the height of the Great Depression in Cleveland, Ohio (USA); and headless, limbless, bodies have begun to show up, 13 bodies in total. By the time 1939, and the last body rolls around, the case is still unsolved, much to the frustration of Elliot Ness and the FBI, looking for a win at catching a serial killer. With 6, 20 minute episodes in Season 1, and a somewhat suspenseful ending, in mid-2022, we can only hope for more. I saw on Reddit in 2022 that they were looking for additional funds to run the next season, so maybe we can make a plea for more in 2024! Let's talk about The Hyacinth Disaster from David E Carlson . The Hyacinth Disaster is a sci-fi, spaceship based audio drama about one mining crew's *very bad* day. Spaceship Hyacinth is crewed by contract miners working for a large scale astroid mining company, finding rocks and getting paid for locating good ore, but when their sister ship, Corvus, and all of its crew are kidnapped for ransom by a rival mining fleet, the Hyacinth takes a risky detour to find the richest rock their crew, and possibly corporate, has ever seen. They figure if they can collect sample data and send it to their corporate overlords the money from the astroid will pay the ransom and set them up for life so they never have to work for Corps ever again! In, out, save the day, is the name of the game. However...there's something really odd about this rock, and as the day goes on, it only gets worse and worse. Midst is a semi-improvised, Spec-fic, sci-fi, space western (like all the best media) Audio drama from the same team who did Blueberries Hill (team, I NEED more dapper animals doing things like solving crimes and preventing ballot tampering. 🙏). This time our trio of narrators take us to a place called, Midst. Midst is a city partly suspended in a Void, a Void called, The Fold; and I capitalize Void because *this* Void has strange properties. You don't want to *be* in The Fold, but sometimes when things go wrong, The Fold may *come* for you and everyone in town. But! Enough about The Fold, it's not a character, right? No, definitely not. More like a malevolent, gaseous, oobleck. Anywho, our main characters are Lark, a mysterious lone wolf type who hunts monsters for bounty and frequents the Black Candle Cabaret, a bar and cabaret in Midst and is friends with the bartender, Sherman, and his daughter, Tzela--who are clearly hiding from something, but it's not immediately clear what. The club is owned in part by Mr. Wheepe, who is a completely unrepentant son-of-bitch, but oops! That's spoilers! When a culty empire called The Trust, who sees good acts as currency (the ultimate in righteousness by works, except used as currency so squirrelly and still bias towards generational wealth), takes an interest in Midst, well...events start to coalesce and take shape into something very complicated indeed, and it sure would be a shame if something bad were to happen to disturb The Fold. Oh my! Well that wasn't complicated OR ominous. What does it all mean?? You'll have to listen and find out! That's 38, 15-30 minute episodes of Midst goodness. Today, let's talk about "Ethics Town" (@ethicstownpod ). Ethics Town is a Spec-fic, philosophy audio drama--is that a thing? Well it is now. It's also a finalist in the New Production category of the 2023 Audioverse awards! (Voting ends 1/2/24, go vote!) At the beginning, there's a man in a shed doing an "emergency broadcast" to whoever will listen, to warn them away from the Town of Ethics. You see, ethical dilemmas and philosophical thought exercises seem *to actually happen* in Ethics. Things like the trolley problem, or if you kill an older person to save a child and two other people via organ donation, is the death justified? And so, the people of Ethics find their lives filled with moral quandries. And when the daughter of the murdered woman shows up, looking for her mother and a place to stay, what will our broadcaster do? Do you tell her the truth and break her heart? Do you keep the secret? As the weeks stretch on and a rapport is developed, do you tell her then...you should have told her at the beginning, but now it's gone too far...and who is the broadcaster exactly? He clearly doesn't understand emergency broadcasts, to be truly honest, this feels more like a journal or town gossip! But never mind that, it's a fun and intriguing listen, with 14, 20ish minute episodes so far since it started this year. "Blemish Returns!" In looking over my 2023 reviews, I have to say, the one universal is me kinda slipping. TBH, it's been a rough year. THAT SAID, in an effort to write some checks my ass (probably) can't cash, I'd like to set a goal of doing a pod a day until my 3-year review-a-versary on January 29th. So, here's an easy start. Let's talk about "Hello from the Magic Tavern" (@hellofromthemagictavern ). Hello from the Magic Tavern is a semi-improvised, comedy, fantasy, fiction podcast done in an interview style. Arnie Niekamp is a regular guy living in Chicago when he accidentally drives his car into a dimensional rift behind a Burger King. He winds up in a D&D fantasy world (Foon) full of wizards, and shape shifters, warriors, witches, etc. For some reason (because many podcasts have a compulsion to justify their existence), Arnie believes starting a podcast is the best way to try to communicate what's happened back to earth (he's still getting a weak wifi signal from the Burger King, through the dimensional rift (and he's so far missed the low-hanging-fruit opportunity of saying "nothin' but 'net"--to my great sadness)). Arnie hangs out in a tavern, at *this very table* (at least for a season or two), and interviews guests from around the tavern and across Foon, and gains two co-hosts, Chunt--a shape shifter who could be anything, but often chooses to be in the form of a badger, and Usidore The Blue--a Wizard, who has many known and secret names, and is a little bit of a lovable f*ck up, but is constantly on a quest to defeat evil. Frankly, with 462 episodes since 2015, there have been some highs and lows, which lead my partner to give up after a bit--there's a stretch with too many butthole and in jokes, and maybe too much "reference monkey" improv foibles, but I think it all comes out in the wash, and I'm glad I stuck with it. There are lovable characters, funny jokes, and an occasional appearance by Felicia Day and other famous folks. You know sometimes you just leave podcast in your queue and then it's spits out show teasers periodically. And while it's just typically repetitive feed drops of new shows from QCODE or 100% Spanish language shows from Sonoro, sometimes you get some unique gold. This came up and I immediately had to listen to the whole show So let's talk about In The Cards from @ncpodcasts . In The Cards is a spec-fic hope-punk? show about fate. Particularly the fate of one man, Gil. Gil has to be the unluckiest guy alive, and yet it mostly doesn't get him down. He just figures, everyone has bad days. Of course, when his buddy, Lex, starts pointing out how these things don't happen to everyone, and Gil mentions that he's never won at *anything*--and several minutes worth of rock, paper, scissors prove it, well...things begin to get interesting. Gil visits a psychic who ran into him on the street and gave him her card. When Gil suddenly decides he needs to visit her right away, her lovely niece, Nadya, reads his cards. Between that and the philosophy class he's taking at night school, Gil decides that he needs to fight his fate! He decides he needs to force the world to cut him a break, and also, he *really* likes Nadya decides to ask her out. It's where fate meets philosophy meets a love story. This full cast of professional actors, director, and writer will delight you! You won't be surprised at all that Broadway and Shakespeare unite them. This is 8, 30ish minute +several bonus interviews to mainline while you do your fall garden cleanup and plant more bulbs!
