I've been going back through old photos recently - lots I'd forgotten about or hadn't ID'd. Including this fuzzy bonnet (in the days before my macro lenses 😭). It's a Mycena parasitised with a pin mould called Spinellus fusiger. Fungus on fungus. It grows in the cap and pops out to produce spores, contained in the sporangia (the dark dots) on the end of the sporangiophores (the hairs). 🤓 Love it. It’s amazing what you find on wanders waiting for the boy to be seen by his specialist. Saw this mycelium on what I think were some russet toughshank. This very common little parasite of Mycena species (and of several other mushroom genera) is known as a pin mould. Who knew a mould could be so pretty? This mushroom caught my eye glistening in the sunlight after a morning of rain, nestled under a huge fern. I noticed what looked like tiny hairs coming out of it, and on closer inspection they seemed to be some kind of mould. It's probably Spinellus fusiger, Bonnet Mould Fungus. Malcolm Storey (who has the brilliant website https://www.bioimages.org.uk/, definitely worth checking out!) suggested it could be worth doing DNA on. I attempted to wrangle some of it onto a piece of foil and it's in the freezer for now.
