We were so excited to participate once again in @NWFolklife this past weekend. Our #PathwithArt Singers, Vet Choir (in partnership with @seattleopera), and Tango band all shared what they’ve been working on with their musical performances. The Singers captivated the audience with their harmonies, the Vet Choir inspired youngsters to dance, and the Tango band truly shined with their musical prowess. We are getting pumped for the @PearlJam shows right around the corner from us at @ClimatePledgeArena next week! For the last 6 years, #PathwithArt and @PearlJam have become friends and partners in uplifting art as a remedy for supporting individuals facing recovery and mental health challenges. The Path with Art and Pearl Jam collaboration began in 2018 when several of our Participant Artists designed a series of posters for The Home Shows, working in collaboration with Pearl Jam to help raise funds to end homelessness. Individuals facing reentry from incarceration face many challenges in our society today, and we’ve heard that incarceration starts the moment they become free from prison. The following artworks were created by Participant Artists in workshops with our partners at @washingtoninnocence and @chiefseattleclub. Our hope is to make these individuals’ transitions a little easier by providing community connections and a space for creative expression. In 2023, 30% of the Path with Art participant population identified as LGBTQIA+, and our new LGBTQIA+ Open Studio was started as a space for participants to create community through art. It took 9 hours to make this self portrait while in the art class Painting with Thread through @pathwithart. Just like every piece I’ve made, I didn’t like how it looked until I finished it. This class welcomes the beginner and will cover a range of topics, such as; an introduction to sketching and transferring images using carbon paper, watercolor wash techniques, layering, and blending. Participants will engage in short lessons followed by hands-on projects each session. Additionally, we will experiment with working from light to dark, as well as use salt techniques and mixed media. Watercolor encourages us to view the world around us from a different perspective so we can express our creativity and build confidence as we deepen our practice--let's paint together! Fun night on Saturday at PATH WITH ART auction. Our gracious hosts the LATHAMS invited my pal CORY GOOCH and I to this, think they raised well over $600,000 for a great cause! For those of you not familiar with PWA, they give free art and music lessons to Washingtonians suffering from trauma (addiction, homelessness, PTSD, mental illness, medical issues, whatever). A team of working artists help them make playful recycled costumes on a theme - this year “REGENERATE” - with “celebrity” models (board members, artists, KEXP DJ JOHN RICHARDS here amongst them), the attendees raise their paddles to donate money, supporting their favouites. There’s also a silent auction, table, set up to make your own fascinator’s, or gisnt cardboard brooches, guests can donate money online in advance to support their choice. Amazon donates the space (& free parking!) for the night, we’re served a delicious dinner, raffle, music and dancing, really moving speeches by people PWA have helped. We are grateful to share about the healing power of art alongside Luz Helena Thompson, veteran and dedicated teaching artist. We exhibited “About Face’ A Collection of Veterans Masks Representing Invisible Wounds”, and had the privilege of joining Luz in her powerful mask making workshop called “Unmasking Military Sexual trauma | The Art of Vulnerability” 🎭Her workshop has been reported to be a transformative and moving experience.
