All of these objects were thrown out by New Yorkers, and like other improperly disposed of trash eventually made their way into our waterways, finally washing up on the shores of Shirley Chisholm State Park. Which one is your favorite? ‼️ All of this trash was disposed of properly after picking it up off the shoreline, keeping it out of NYC waterways. As of May 2024, volunteers have removed more than 1500 pounds of plastic trash so far during this year, keeping that pollution out of Jamaica Bay! We’re well on our way to beating 2023’s record of 2000+ pounds of garbage picked up off the park’s shorelines. While the park is indeed built upon a former landfill, the landfill was capped, then covered with many layers of graded fill, then topsoil and finally native plants. All of the trash washes up from the rest of the city, mainly during CSO (combined sewer overflow) events where a combination of rainwater, trash and sewage gets released into New York City waterways. It was Captain Peter Johnsen, harking back to his seafaring days, who sewed the first two hammocks… intended to help mothers rest a little while their babies slept, the idea proved popular and 500 were soon installed. They were amongst the memories brought back after listening to a WNYC radio program by one of our passengers, Sadie, who reminisced “My sisters, brother, me and our mom went twice a week for the ride on your ship in the 1950’s. I remember a lot of things from that great experience. Seeing the Statue of Liberty was amazing. The arts and crafts room, peanut butter sandwiches, movies and don’t forget the baby hammocks hooked on the back of the chairs. I remember the dentist there pulling out one of my teeth and then going to the nap area to rest. We were picked up at our apartment by a bus and everyone would sing fun songs on the way to the ship and back. Today has been designated Giovanni da Verrazzano Day by the City of New York! It was established to honor the Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano who sailed for France and became the first European to enter what would become known as New York Harbor five hundred years ago today on April 17, 1524. He is also the namesake of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge that connects the two boroughs of Brooklyn to Staten Island across the body of water known as the Narrows. It was part of the explorer’s journey along the east coast of the United States, into the region that would become New York City, where Casa Belvedere – house with a beautiful view – overlooks the bay and the Verrazzano Bridge. The Columbus Citizens Foundation website describes Verrazzano’s visit to New York Bay as “brief, and he had unassuming words for what would become Brooklyn and Staten Island (“two small but prominent hills either side of a very wide river”). Nonetheless, the record of his voyage, known as the Cellere Codex, revolutionized the nature of cartographic knowledge for his contemporaries. Until Verrazzano’s account was read, it was mistakenly believed that the Atlantic stretched, unbroken, all the way to Asia. It resolved the question of what lay between English-discovered territories in Canada and Spanish discoveries in the south of the United States. It provided a reliable topographical model for future exploration and led to the creation of what would be the defining map of the world for many generations, Gerolamo’s map of 1529. Verrazzano’s arduous journey in 1524 was aboard La Dauphine, a small three-masted sailing vessel. His discoveries inspired others to continue exploring, including Henry Hudson, who became the namesake of the Hudson River.
