Why Not Me? Recently I graduated with a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Education. “Why Not Me” was the core of the inspirational message our commencement speaker, Matt Higgins, delivered in his commencement address! This phrase embodies the spirit of adventure, the spirit of exploration, the spirit of seizing the day, the spirit of taking your life into your own hands and going after your dreams! As Matt Higgins would say, making your “Plan A” the priority is living the phrase “Why Not Me?” Your “Plan A” is what you know you can do and what you dream of. It’s everything and more, so go after it. In this photo I stand in the Great Hall, sometimes called the Registry Room, of Ellis Island. I look up at the marvelous ceiling constructed with Guastavino Tile Vaults and I ponder the history of the room. But not just any history, in a way, I ponder my own history. Over a century ago, my great grandparents stood in that very room as tired, worn out immigrants who had just endured a journey across the North Atlantic Ocean. For them, and many others, America was their “Plan A.” For them, “Why Not Me” was the philosophy of hope for a better future for their family. In the first quarter of the 20th century, about 5000 people were processed through this room every day. Each one of them living their “Plan A.” I am beyond thankful to my great grandparents, and all my ancestors, for choosing America, for choosing their “Plan A” in their “Why Not Me” moment. Oggi è stata la giornata delle camminate senza fine con le scarpe sbagliate perché all’universo oggi girava così. La giornata delle maglie sbagliate perché, pur essendomi cambiato tre volte, alla fine la scelta è ricaduta sulla cosa meno consigliata per girare sotto il sole a 500 gradi senza vento col risultato che sono stato praticamente l’emblema di quello che i tg dicono agli anziani di non fare quando fuori fa troppo caldo. Rimanere idratati? Sì, ma a Ellis Island lo si fa con l’acqua in lattina così da mimetizzarsi in maniera healthy con l’americano medio che beve birra qui e là. È stata la giornata del tempismo poco perfetto concluso con una corsa (con le sopracitate scarpe scomode) per non perdere il traghetto. È stata anche quella giornata dove gradasso ho affrontato la mia paura per le altezze e ho scalato i 180 gradini del piedistallo della statua della libertà (non sono salito fino in cima per tanti motivi e prima che possiate pensare che centri l’altezza sì c’è pure quella) per sbucare su un terrazzino grosso come quelli francesi. Risultato? Un grande schiaffo da parte delle vertigini dritto sul naso che però è durato poco quindi mi sento molto proud di me. È stata anche la giornata dove sono venuto a trovare i colleghi oltreoceano nel loro negozio molto bello (sì, faccio pubblicità ma tanto mi seguono due gatti e un piccione quindi posso senza dover mettere l’ashtag ADV). Insomma è stata una giornata sgangherata ma che tra i vari pezzi cesellati male mi ha lasciato lo spazio per respirare e godermi tutto. Una bellissima sensazione! Essendo una persona molto attenta a come si incastrano i pezzi della vita uno sopra l’altro, l’abbandonarsi al concetto “ma si ma sticazzi” e godersi al 1000% la giornata di oggi è stata una grande grandissima universale lezione di vita! Pleasantly surprised while taking this image from Ellis Island off of a Manilla envelope file card. I bought a number of images from a collection over a decade ago that had some really exceptional photographers associated with it, unbeknownst to the dealer (who was a bit of a rude idiot). It was called JP The Mint. I think it has since sold to the Brown Bros on eBay and is finally handled by people who know what they have, but for that small window of a few years, I was lucky to pick things off the site for about 10 bucks each. We are a country of immigrants. And that is worth celebrating. This was made movingly clear to me last week while visiting Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty in New York City with my eleven-year-old son, Ian. Nothing But a Dream From 1892 to 1954, around twelve million immigrants passed through Ellis Island, including my paternal grandfather and Ian’s great grandfather after whom he is named: Yakov Kaufman. A fourteen-year-old Jewish boy from Krakow, Poland, Yakov disembarked in 1906 at the three-story brick government building on the island with no parents, no money, and nothing but a dream. The first thing Yakov would have seen upon entering the New York Harbor is the iconic Statue of Liberty. We’d booked a ‘Holiday Cruise’ to see the Statue of Liberty. The cruise lasted around an hour and a half and sailed from Chelsea Harbour, round Ellis Island and past The Statue of Liberty 🗽 We felt like it was the perfect way to see the iconic landmark, and we got some great pictures. We also got a drink and some cookies included within the cost of the cruise.
