Final day of filming for the Sherbourne Valley Project @warwickshirewt ! ... Today, we visited Corley Moor and Lake View Park, guided by Alex from the Trust. We saw some cool birds, including a calling sparrowhawk (I'd never heard one call before!), a pair of jays and a pair of greater spotted woodpeckers. While looking at a small oak tree we found a cockchafer AKA a maybug - absolutely huge! Definitely a highlight (until it 💩 on Charlie's hand)... We also did some 'river dipping' - another first for me - to take a look at what was living on the Sherbourne River bed. Dipping in rivers is a great tool to monitor pollution, as some species are more tolerant of pollution than others, and so you can work out what is going on from the kinds of species present. We found a great variety of creatures, including bullhead fry, which were great to see. Swipe for videos 🪱 It was a great day! 🦫 BEAVER PATROL 🦫 Recently I had the opportunity to visit Woodland Valley Farm in Cornwall to make a documentary about their beaver reintroduction project. I had a fantastic time staking out the enclosure to film them, and learning first hand how beavers impact their environment. I cannot overstate how beautiful this place is. This weekend was my first time seeing a beaver up close (behave) and I will always cherish the memories of my time here. Beavers' dam building activities increase local biodiversity, which made my job as sound recordist so much fun. The variety of birdsong I recorded is unlike anything I've captured in the past. I also used a bat detector for the first time, which was fascinating. 11 species of bat have been recorded at Woodland Valley Farm, so I'm sure I only scratched the surface. I've only been home a day and I'm already dreaming of going back. #beaver #beavers #conservation #biodiversity #wetlands #naturedocumentary #cornwall

Did you know black bears used to live on the Tallgrass Prairie in Kansas? It's true! They occupied the riparian zones along rivers and creeks like the one in this newspaper report from Mills and Smith Real Estate Advertiser in 1868. This particular bear was killed along the Big Blue River just a few miles from Kansas State University. KSU was founded in 1861 so students were going to class while black bears roamed a few miles away. At the time, the Tallgrass Prairie extended across the area but today it's limited to 3,487 hectares on the Konza Prairie. Matteo Clarke @matteo_wildlife , co-founder of WildReach Productions, is an award winning wildlife filmmaker and conservationist from Bristol, UK.
