The Wildlife Viewing Program will lead an easy walk along the bluff overlooking Lower Chansàn Chuà (McIntyre Creek) as part of the CPAWS Care for the Creek event. We’ll bring some spotting scopes and binoculars to scan the wetland below looking for beaver, muskrat, moose or eagle nests. This easy walk follows a relatively level but uneven foot-trail with sandy sections. We’ll be lingering at the point so camp chairs or sit-upons to relax while wildlife viewing are encouraged. Hard work pays off! While we work to reforest the @natural.area.smcvt , wildlife has returned to remind us who the real natural engineers are. Beavers are an important part of the Vermont landscape. They create wetland habitats many species of insects, fish, birds, amphibians, and much, much more! While dams made by beavers have flooded our trails, we recognize that beavers are doing much more good than harm. Presence of wetlands helps mitigate flood damage and can help capture and filter sediment and pollution before it reaches Lake Champlain. This is why we had Community Service Day volunteers help us construct 12 8-foot walkways to ensure humans still have access to our Lower Field trails without disturbing the activities of our local beavers. Now that it gets light earlier, #eachmorning I walk #calvinthedog between 5-6:30am and it is perhaps my #favoritetimeoftheday - I usually take routes that are half #trail and half #countryroad while everything is #dewy and #misty and #quietandstill. Depending which route I choose, I see different wonderful things. Some mornings it’s #deer, or #beavers - a construction crew hard at work building their dams, so industrious. There are always the #geese and the #rabbits (so many rabbits). Often #chipmunks, usually #groundhogs too. Sometimes if I take the longer route, and if I time it just right, I cross the commute path of a #beautifulbear - we say our own wary version of hello, respecting each other’s space - I walk with Calvin saying ‘hey bear, hello bear, hi bear, good day bear, goodbye bear’ while it ambles across the #countryroad and stops to sit just inside #thewoods where it watches intently and stock still as we pass on by. This only happens if I reach this exact spot at 5:50am ( #bearoclock) so while it’s happened enough times now to feel like a routine for us both, it doesn’t happen every day - only on the days I’m lucky enough. Sometimes I’d see a #fox on the path if I go in the other direction, but again, only at a specific time ( #foxoclock). I think she’s moved on now though because I haven’t seen in a few weeks. But today on the far side of my walk I saw another fox - or maybe the same fox? We watched each other for a while, then she trotted off into #thewoods while Calvin and I continued on. Just up the road from where she was roaming I saw her three #kits tucked away in a #littlegroveoftrees - all ears and curiousity, staring from the safety of their den. I’ve been told too, that soon the #snappingturtles will come up from #thelake to #laytheireggs in the sand, en masse. That’ll be a sight to see. It has been a long, wet spring but finally the days are longer and we have been venturing out at the extremes of both ends of the day, to watch for wildlife. Watching for wildlife in this nature depleted country can feel like hard work. We sit up, hide behind a make-do blind and wait for ages and yet often, still see so very little. All part of the Zen of wildlife watching. But last night was really lovely when a beaver swam out of a pile of partially submerged jumble of branches and headed upstream towards its current feeding patch. It was quite late when this photo was taken - after sunset. The light had almost disappeared completely and it was very dark under the tree canopy. The beaver was on the opposite river bank, too far for the reach of a flash and we were too slow with our lights. And I think you have to be really careful about sing such artificial lights with animals that prefer the low light. In such conditions I rely heavily on the extremes of what my camera can do and hope to clean up in post. For the camera buffs out there this was taken on a Nikon D850, hand held as I tracked the beaver along the river bank, with a 200-500 lens at 500mm, ISO 25,600, speed 1/125 F5.6 Breaking all the rules but hey, sometimes you just have to take the shot and hope for the best! #wildlifephotography #wildlifestoriesUK #wildlifestories #wildlife #beavers #devon #devonwildlife
We’ve got a surprise South & South East London Scouts meet the team as we introduce David Liddle! (He doesn’t know this is being posted 😂) When he’s not climbing rock faces, exploring caves or dressed up as a unicorn, David is a mortgage and financial advisor. He’s also known for his adventurous lifestyle having climbed mountains, ran marathons, sailed oceans and can often be found swimming The Serpentine. David is currently the scout leader at 8th Lambeth, but also holds many roles at County Level including our Social Media Manager (So it’s David you can thank if you’ve ever had a mugshot posted on here!) He’s probably most well known for leading the South London Scouts’ Camp Croatia 2023! He managed to lead 4 incredible training events and a 10 day trip to Croatia. This weekend saw the reunion event, and what an event it was! From bouncy castles, to fire eaters and even a snake! David has worked alongside Liz, Richie and Becca to deliver the largest international event in the county’s history, and even won a South London Scouts Gold Shining Star for Team of the Year in 2023! So who’s taking on the next trip? Over the next few months we are going to highlight those enthusiastic members who mare making Scouting happen in South & South East London Scouts. We’d love to hear your volunteer nominations, and we’ll post as many as we can. The aim of this is very simple - to connect the dots across the county, and help our members get to know each other! This is all about having a bit of fun and enthusiastically championing and cheering your local Scouting, however we do absolutely rely on you to tell us what you are up to. There’s no such thing as enough research:) In our beaver’s case, it was especially important. Since we wanted to inform the public about them, we had to know them very well. We read articles, watched documentaries, and many fun and funny videos. Soon, we were invaded by beavers on Instagram too (the algorithm's gift). One of the perks of working on a different range of subjects is that you get to have various general knowledge - and loads of specific details that stick with you. Take our illustrator, for example, who got stuck on her retina with the color of beavers’ teeth (orange) and with the fact that it is due to the concentration of iron in the enamel. They are often, as a convention, drawn in white. Beavers can be ‘ecosystem engineers’ generating a habitat for dozens of other species. The wood they bring into water provides food and shelter for insects, who in turn attract fish and birds. Their dams slow water, creating wetlands and marshy meadows.
