Surprise, Miracle Legion are playing live again. Way back in 2017 they announced at a show in San Francisco that it would be their last performance. They told a lie. This June they’ll be doing a short east coast tour in support of the re-release of their classic album ‘Surprise Surprise Surprise’. The run starts in New Hampshire and ends at Wilco’s Solid Sound Fest at MassMoca. The set list will likely lean heavy on the Surprise record which is being re-release on vinyl June 1. The record has been remastered and re-mixed by Paul Kolderie (Radiohead, Pixies, Throwing Muses). Miracle Legion formed in the the 80’s and became something of a cult hit following acclaim from the likes of NME and Melody Maker and the release of their debut album on Rough Trade Records. They released several albums and toured the US and Europe. They split in the 90’s and did other things. Singer Mark Mulcahy would go on to form Polaris and make solo records and Scott Boutier and Dave MaCaffrey joined up with Frank Black and became The Catholics. I tried all night to get a good picture of him singing behind his wild hair and wild movements. After the show he introduced himself and asked me to take a band photo. I was so excited. I shot a roll and went back uptown to the university campus darkroom. I developed and printed all night and mailed the contact sheet and a print the next day. He used it and we became lifelong friends....He was the first artist to use my picture (the blind monkey) on his album (Fathering). He and Clem and Flo lost Melissa in 2008. She is here on the cover of the tribute album Ciao My Shining Star, with covers of Mark's song by Vic Chesnutt, Michael Stipe, Thom Yorke and The Butterflies of Love, among others. Day 360: Polaris - Music From the Adventures of Pete and Pete LP. Record Store Day release limited to 2100 copies. I believe this was the first vinyl release of this album? Someone correct me if I’m wrong there. Pete and Pete was a huge, foundational show for me as a young NJ weirdo. I’ve said for a long time that New Jersey breeds a very specific kind of weirdo, and that’s on display perfectly in Pete and Pete. It holds up too; I can watch it and love it just as much today. The music was a massive part of what made the show special, so I needed to own this. The whole record is great but the tentpoles are “Hey Sandy” and “Summerbaby”, which are rightfully at the start of each side. It’s a hot, hazy day in NJ today and this record fits perfectly.

For this November Band Camp Friday Mezzotint is so happy to release ‘Petals in the Well’. It’s a collection of never heard, never used soundtrack songs. If you’ve been to the movies you’ll know that they often have music playing while the actors drive around or have a gunfight or go to a funeral or fooling around or winning or losing. Just about wherever the director thinks some certain music would be nice. Where does all that music come from? Hollywood probably, but not every song is from there. Sometimes they ask for a song you already have and sometimes they ask you to write one.This record is the latter. All this music, mostly instrumentals was stuff I wrote for movies but was never used. They used other music which was not great, but show biz is like that. The first 8 songs were for a movie called ‘The Last Word’ directed by my friend Mark Pellington. One of the songs was supposed to have been used when Shirley Maclaine was walking into her house or something. That would have been a thrill. The rest are a lot of ideas I though up after watching some scenes Mark sent me. Songs 9-15 are from a movie called ‘Spring Forward’, written and directed by my very good friend Tom Gilroy. It’s a wonderful movie w/ Ned Beatty & Liev Schrieber. It takes place in Connecticut and even has a guy wearing a Miracle Legion t-shirt.Solid continuity. Most of the songs didn’t make it, but this is the demo for A Cup of Tea. Tom ended up using a re-recorded version as the credits song. Sweet success. A bunch of misfit songs that sat in a drawer. Post 542: Miracle Legion (2016) Some bands are meant to find you. I came across Miracle Legion months before I heard anything by them. Thumbing through records in 1987 at Our Price in Aldershot, I picked up ‘Surprise Surprise Surprise’. The front cover had an air of Russian orthodox iconography about it. The back had the band in some sort of fancy dress. One looking like some sort of high priest, another with a Pierrot face. There was a blue wig, dungarees, tons of face paint and a dog in a fur hat and purple lace. Frankly, it put me off. Psychedelia? Paisley Underground? Not really my bag. But still I picked it up every time I went into the shop … Finally, I bought it. One listen to Surprise Surprise Surprise was enough to know. This was my band. I said to myself, “self, what should we play next?” And my self replied “how bout some Polaris?”. I replied, “ah yes, but what pressing do we play? Day 29 of the @jennn_erator #mayvinylchallenge — pick a soundtrack I grew up in the late 80s to mid 90s and Nickelodeon was a staple of my television diet. Many many shows — those early Nicktoons were a fave, as was the early SNICK lineups, but to me, there is no show held in higher regard than The Adventures of Pete and Pete. It was charming, bizarre, and just downright brilliant — it’s the perfect representation of weird kids, and it still feels oddly relatable. And it’s lead characters were both redheads, in the era when being a redhead meant you got called names. But the other thing about Pete and Pete was the glut of great music (and references to) sprinkled throughout the show — Magnetic Fields, Lucious Jackson, Apples and Stereo — and also acting appearances by Iggy Pop, Michael Stipe, Gordon Gano, David Johanssen, Marshall Crenshaw, Debbie Harry, Kate Pierson, Syd Straw, so many more too. But the biggest contribution was from Polaris — essentially a three-piece version of Miracle Legion (though the whole band appears in an episode where Little Pete falls in love with a band who played a song in their garage). They did the theme song and many incidental songs throughout the series, lovingly collected here. The album on it’s own is still a great little collection of songs; it’s within the spirit of the show; big-eyed and earnest jangle summery pop rock all composed by Mark Mulcahy. It gets played regularly around here, but it’s always one that gets played on this exact weekend, and I feel like it’s my unofficial way to kick off summer; the sound of and smell of lawns mowed, the smell of meat grilling, the best season ever. Why do I like summer so much? I was once a kid, and all summers felt oddly magical and kind of still do. My favorite of Miracle Legion’s records, “Surprise, Surprise, Surprise” came out in 1987 on Rough Trade. While they sometimes get lumped in with the smart college jangle-pop that R.E.M. launched, I’d actually draft Mark Mulcahy over Stipe when it comes to vocals. Guitarist Ray Neal and Mulcahy are definitely an underrated 80s songwriting team. Great one-two punch of “Mr. Mingo” and “All For The Best” to open the album. “All For The Best” ought to be shot into space in a time capsule so that future aliens can hear the essence of what 80s college rock production and arrangements were all about. Huge snare sound, great riff that sounds simple, but is enhanced by the guitar tone, and an outro for the ages (love the way the bass sounds as it takes off into the “Promise me son…” part). Lyrics are so cool, but it’s how the words and voice sound that make this a melancholy headphone classic. It’s rare that I can get past it without picking up the needle and playing it again and again. And…bonus liner note content! Very endearing that the band includes “Please write to us at Raymond’s House” with his Branford, CT address in the liner notes.
