🎶🎨⏳Smitten forever. When I read somewhere that musician Ron Hawkins (Lowest of the Low, Ron Hawkins and the Rusty Nails, The Do Good Assassins) played goalie as a kid in Toronto, an idea popped into my head. This WAS about five years ago, but Ron is an incredible artist as well and I figured it would be pretty awesome if a favourite songsmith could paint my favourite image of a North Star. It happened to be an old shot of Gilles Meloche, way out of his crease and eyeing the approaching onslaught of the opposing team. He played goal for the ‘Noff Staws’ when I first discovered the team, age 3, 1981 Playoffs. Something about them just naturally appealed to me.. the green and yellow, the ‘stars’, their Cinderella run to the finals (let’s face it, all the Minnesota playoff runs were pretty much fairy tales, where the team somehow overachieved for 3 out of 4 series). This image has always stuck out to me, the darkness of the arena in the background, the old bluish ice, the boards so pleasantly void of advertising. Ron crushed this, he absolutely crushed it. It took me three attempts to open it as I was breaking into laugh attacks and backed off twice ha ha.. After thinking it had been possibly lost in the mail, I was more than elated to have a look. It’s beautiful, takes me back to my childhood and just FILLS my inspirational gas tank. I’ll cherish it for all my days. [Live Music In The T-Dot] The Stephen Stanley Band @ Horseshoe Tavern w/ Graven & Lazarettes (April 26, 2024) • Indie Rock / Folk / Alt Country / Jangle Pop • I had the privilege of seeing some excellent Ontario bands on Friday night and the evening was just the right vibe for how I was feeling at the end of a busy week. • Lazarettes are a relatively new band and there ain’t much info out there about them, but I enjoyed their set and thought they were very easy to like. They played a tight set of rootsy, countryfied rock ‘n’ roll with vocals slightly reminiscent (at least to my ears) of Scott McCaughey (The Minus Five, Young Fresh Fellows, etc). Good stuff! • It’s hard to believe that I was only introduced to the music of Graven (aka Matty McKechnie) a few months ago because his music has become like a lifelong friend to me. I’ve been spinning his most recent album “Simple Complex” regularly and there’s such a warm sincerity to his lyrics that I can’t help but feel like I know him personally (more than I actually do). It was great to see him again, and the songs have never sounded better as he had a full band accompanying him this time. I especially enjoyed the pedal steel accompaniment, and the whole band was clearly having a great time up there. Loved it! • The evening’s headliner was The Stephen Stanley Band. Stanley is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter and guitarist who is also a founding member, lead guitarist and vocalist with the acclaimed, early 90’s alt-rock band, The Lowest of the Low. I had seen him once before with that band, but this was my first time checking out his own work, and it was great. There were many energetic, good-time rockers in his set, but it was actually some of the ballads that got to me the most. There was "One More Day", the as-yet-unreleased song about legendary Toronto Maple Leaf Börje Salming, and the set opener “The Owl”; a touching tribute to Dave “Bookie” Bookman, the beloved radio DJ who introduced me, and so many others, to many wonderful unsigned bands through the years. The lyric: “Everything worth knowing is hidden in your record collection” really resonates with me, for obvious reasons. It was a beautiful evening.

So I got to get serious for a moment and show my disgust once again in the human race. So every year my dad's grave is always taken care of and decorated nice like it's supposed to be, but with one addition that's missing this year a grave blanket for the cold that we buy every year for him which we did but some lowlife scum pos stole it from his resting place and of course no one can do anything about it and of course it's difficult to get another one right now.
