My blended childhood in two photographs. Which one is your favorite? - Since some of you are new faces here, my aapi backstory is: - I was born and raised in the Kowloon area of Hong Kong until the age of 7. - My family immigrated to the States in late 1994. We first settled in Chinatown. I enrolled as a first grader at Castelar Elementary, not far from the Chinatown Central Plaza depicted here. - I primarily taught myself how to speak English by watching The Simpsons. It aired every night at around 7pm, around the time chores were done and dinner was on the table. Lisa was my go to choice of teacher. - I’ve always felt not Asian American enough here and not quite Hong Konger overseas. It’s something I still reconciling with. - The end goal with sharing my photography is to ultimately tell the unseen stories, whether through our natural landscape or passing moments on the street, that continue to define and shape me into the person and artist I am today. During the Second Sino-Japanese War and later WWII, Anna May Wong contributed to the war effort both in the U.S. and China, becoming one of the biggest fundraisers for United China Relief. This photo, taken by Harry Quillen in 1938, dates from that period. Here she poses at a stall in L.A.’s Chinatown that offers “Your Name in Chinese 10¢.” That same day she helped plant a willow tree, her namesake (Frosted Yellow Willows), met with children from the community, and visited Chinatown businesses. Even the content of her films began to reflect this newfound patriotism and embrace of her Chinese heritage. "King of Chinatown," made just the year before, was a fictionalized biopic of Dr. Margaret Chung and her efforts to support China in the war. Thank you @penguinteen for the physical copy! 😍 I had soooo much fun reading this historical fiction ya mystery. The MCs are sisters and I found their relationship realistic and sweet. I have two sisters myself, so I love it when I can see real sibling love (and also believable arguments 😅) in books. The mystery in this novel was super fun! Murder, starlet, Hollywood, corrupt cops, 1930s LA’s Chinatown, flower truck business, sick parent, pregnant parent, little romances, celebrity parties-there are so many fun and impactful elements in this book. I highly recommend Kill Her Twice and can’t wait to read more of Stacey Lee’s work!

White tea 白茶 has been known as the first discovered tea in Chinese history. Generally, it is sun dried and never been roasted. Therefore, it is the category of tea that has the least amount of processing with the most fundamental and original state of tea. 🫖 - Steep has been featuring white tea as a limited tea in the past seasons. Starting now, we officially add White Tea to our daily tea collection. From freshly brewed to cold brewed to tea ceremonies. We used three year aged Shoumei White Tea 壽眉白茶 for our freshly brewed and cold brewed tea. It is a big leaf tea with bright orange-yellow tea color. It is rich in flavor which is perfect to use making into tea drinks. 🧊☕️ - For our tea ceremony collection, we have Wild Mudan 荒野牡丹 and eight year aged Laocong Gongmei老欉貢眉. Wild Mudan is a young tea that was harvested last year. It was grown in the wild without any cultivation. The tea soup is light green-yellow and with a refreshing grassy taste. The aged Laocong Gongmei is the first aged white tea Steep collected three plus years ago. I've always heard my friend rave about Mamalu's XLB, claiming he could eat it every day! I used to tease him, asking if he's the boss of Mamalu because he talks about it so much!😥 But after visiting by chance, I finally understand why he's so obsessed.
