A 2 pm snack last week @kimchuyrestaurant 金水潮州粿條, a 30+ year old Chiu Chow Chinese Cambodian restaurant in Los Angeles Chinatown. For some reason only one item stood out for me to try that was based on available stomach quota. Part of it was because it appeared to be a very legitimate and traditional Chiu Chow Chinese offering that I’ve been wanting to try in Hong Kong but haven’t been able to yet, and this also being integral to the grassroots food culture. Leek Cake 潮州韮菜粿. They come either steamed or pan fried. The owners were gracious enough when I asked if half could be steamed, and half of the rest for an order could be pan fried, that they did it for me. A side of fermented fish sauce, though sweeter than what I had had before (perhaps some sweet vinegar was added to temper), provides the right level of seasoning to cut away the heaviness of the glutinous rice cake exterior. Generous amount of leeks (it is more like chives) inside. The steamed version has really good texture，similar to offerings from the old world. The pan fried version is essentially steamed first then pan fried, which lessens the glutinous surface texture for ease of eating and adds an aromatic crispy texture and sear to it. The steamed version’s exterior resembles the texture of Hakka Taiwanese glutinous rice pasties / cakes known as Hee Pan 喜粄 you would find at say shops that specialize in Zhongli district 中壢 near Taoyuan City in Taiwan. Now that the stomach had been properly lined up further from this, it was time for some top quality coffee ☕️ at the opposite end of the plaza 😏

#lachinatown is a worthy pilgrimage for any cinephile as it is steeped with cinematic history. Between the dynamic color tones and decorative elements, it comes as no surprise that #losangeleschinatown has been utilized as the setting for many films and TV shows. I have highlighted just a handful of spots that I learned about via @korp.nick and online: 1️⃣ The #royalpagodamotel in the #lalaland movie. 2️⃣ #lalaland also used the plaza with the red lanterns as well. 3️⃣ #goldendragonseafoodrestaurant in Netflix’s #thebrotherssun . 4️⃣ The #foochowrestaurant is an easy film spot to recognize as they painted a huge sign to showcase where they’ve made an appearance - in #rushhour . 5️⃣ This building was showcased in #freakyfriday . 6️⃣-8️⃣ Towering above the rest of the buildings around the area, #hoplouie definitely stood out from all the rest. With how striking the design is, I wasn’t surprised to learn that it has been used for a number of shows and films over the years. 1️⃣ My favorite part was sightseeing through #lachinatown . I couldn’t get enough of the classic and ornate architecture, colors, and styling of the buildings there. Each establishment has its own unique touch which adds to the vintage charm of the area. While some parts of #losangeleschinatown still thrive (such as Far East Plaza Shopping Mall), it’s heartbreaking to see that many other spots are abandoned or in decline. Between many residents and businesses migrating out to other locations (like San Gabriel Valley) to the lingering costs of the pandemic, many recognized figures (such as The Shop Plaza or Ai Hoa Supermarket) have moved on to other prospects. Still, there is enduring spirit about #chinatown . 2️⃣-3️⃣ Past the welcome gates, we were greeted by this statue of #sunyatsen . 4️⃣-5️⃣ The iconic #redlanterns which have been used as backdrops in photos, movies, and TV shows. 6️⃣ The traditional Chinese architectural style of this store really pops out beautifully. 7️⃣-8️⃣ A powerful memorial to the great @brucelee . #brucelee #bruceleestatue 9️⃣-🔟 Such wonderful vibrant vibes all over the place. #chinatownla #chinatownlosangeles
