84 years ago today--Feb. 29, 1940--Hattie McDaniel won a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for 1939's GONE WITH THE WIND. She was the first Black person ever nominated for an Oscar and the first person to WIN one. She received a plaque rather than a statute (all supporting performances from 1936--1942 got plaques rather than statues). Eight years later, in 1948, James Baskett won a special Oscar for playing Uncle Reemus in Disney's SONG OF THE SOUTH--the first Black man to win an Oscar. Ethel Waters was the second African-American person nominated for an Oscar (for Best Supporting Actress) for 1949's PINKY. Dorothy Dandridge was the third Black person nominated for an Oscar and the first Black woman nominated for Best Actress for 1954's CARMEN JONES. Sidney Poitier earned a (Best Actor) Oscar nomination for 1958's THE DEFIANT ONES and Juanita Moore (Best Supporting Actress nominee) for 1959's IMITATION OF LIFE. Just five Black Oscar nominees (and two wins) in Oscar's first three decades. Talk about #OscarSoWhite! #hattiemcdaniel #ethelwaters #dorothydandridge #sidneypoitier #juanitamoore #jamesbaskett

Tänään on kulunut 120 vuotta Baskettin syntymästä. #disney #pinssi #pins #päivänpinssi #dailydisneypin #jamesbaskett #syntymäpäivä #birthday #vanhattarinat #songofthesouth #velikani #brerrabbit #mikkorepolainen #brerfox #velinalle #brerbear #1904 #dlrp #limitededition #le900 #2008

On this day in 1904, the talented and legendary James Franklin Baskett was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. Baskett played many roles in his lifetime but perhaps his most famous role was playing as Uncle Remus, and providing the voice of Br'er Fox in Disney's Song of the South. It was this role and the help of Walt Disney himself that Baskett became the first African-American man to revive an Oscar. Baskett passed away shortly after in 1948 but his work and accomplishments will never be forgotten, especially his performance as that crazy chaotic Fox we all love. It is fitting for Black History Month that we remember the first man to ever win an (honorary) Oscar. While it was a slap in the face to receive only an honorary award, it was a small step in the right direction. Due to the controversy surrounding Song of the South (Disney will not rerelease it on film or through Disney+) and his early death, Mr. Baskett is often forgotten. On today's This Day in History, we remember Mr. Baskett. Did You Know??- The first black actress to win an Oscar was Hattie McDaniel in 1940 for Best Supporting Actress in Gone With the Wind. When Ms. McDaniel won the award, she had to wait in a different room, segregated, until she was called to accept the Oscar. The first black actor to officially win an Oscar was Sidney Poitier in 1963 for his role in Lilies of the Field. It would be 19 more years until another black actor wins an Oscar award. #offstagewdw #thisdayinhistory #disneyhistory #jamesbaskett #hattiemcdaniel #sidneypoitier #blackhistorymonth

#iraccontidelloziotom #songofthesouth #jamesbaskett #bobbydriscoll #hattiemcdaniel #paulsmith #waltdisney #film #filmdavedere Film fantasy molto bello!

Today, we commemorate James Baskett. James Baskett was the first African American to receive a Special/Honorary Oscar for his performance in Disney's "Song of the South" (1946). While the movie has been derided by contemporary audiences, James Baskett himself wasn't able to attend the premiere due to his race. To me, the roles he portrayed over his career never properly showcased the full range of his talent. #JamesBaskett #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackActors #KnowYourHistory #LegendsNeverDie

On this day in #Disney History- One of the most controversial films ever released by the Disney Studios permieres. On this day, November 12, 1946, 76 years ago: Walt Disney's Song of the South, released by RKO, debuts at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, Georgia. The film, based on the books by Joel Chandler Harris, is Walt's first major plunge into live-action filmmaking, although it also contains 3 animated segments. Taking place in the southern United States during the Reconstruction era (a period of American history after the end of the American Civil War), Uncle Remus, portrayed by James Baskett, tells a young boy stories about trickster Br'er Rabbit, who outwits Br'er Fox and slow-witted Br'er Bear. The premiere is sponsored jointly by the #Atlanta Junior League and the #UncleRemus Memorial Association. In attendance is #WaltDisney, who makes introductory remarks, introduces the cast and then surprisingly leaves the theater before the film starts. Not in attendance though is the film’s star, #JamesBaskett, who was unable to attend the film's premiere because Atlanta was then a racially segregated city. The cast includes Bobby Driscoll (who would later voice #PeterPan) as Johnny, Luana Patten as Virginia "Ginny" Favers, Ruth Warrick as Sally, Lucile Watson as Grandmother, and #HattieMcDaniel as Aunt Tempy. The film features 9 songs, including "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" and "Everybody's Got a Laughing Place." James Baskett will later be given an honorary #AcademyAward for his portrayal of Uncle Remus, the first black man to win any kind of Oscar. The film will later provide the inspiration for the #SplashMountain attractions at various #DisneyParks. A move that today has the attraction being "rethemed" due to its ties to the controversial film. Despite its controversy in 2003, the Online Film Critics Society ranked the film as the 67th greatest animated film of all time.

OTD - November 12, 1946 - Walt Disney's 11th feature-length film, "Song of the South", premiered in Atlanta. Adapted from Joel Chandler Harris's "Tales of Uncle Remus", this was Walt's first live-action narrative film. Although this had always been his goal, Walt began experimenting with live-action in the 1940s to save time and money, following the box-office losses of "Pinocchio", "Fantasia" (1940) and "Bambi" (1942). Encouraged by the results of "The Three Caballeros" (1944), he decided to make "Song of the South" a merger of live-action and animation.  Walt hired Harve Foster to direct the live-action, and radio performer James Baskett for the role of the film's star, Uncle Remus. The short running time and simplicity of the cartoon segments, which were single-handedly storyboarded by Bill Peet, gave the animators free reign with the character animation, and many of them recalled that "they never did anything more fun than that". To capture the essence of the South, concept artist Mary Blair went on a trip to Georgia to produce inspirational artwork, and her dynamic color compositions were a strong complement to the setting and tone. "Song of the South" was a box-office success, greatly relieving the studio of its debt and earning an Academy Award for its song "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah". Although he was unable to attend the premiere due to racial segregation, Baskett won a special Academy Award for his performance, upon Walt's petitioning. Although the film is largely unavailable on home video due to modern-day distributors believing it to idealize slavery (when in fact the story is set during the Reconstruction Era), it is widely regarded by historians and animators as some of Disney's finest work. Animation director Wilfred Jackson recalled : "I think the happiest time I ever had working on any picture was on "Song of the South". [...] Walt was again very closely, personally involved with what we were doing. This was his first venture into live-action features and he was quite interested in the outcome. This meant that Walt was working closely with us and that always made a thing really exciting".

One of my 2023 highlights will surely be seeing Splash Mountain’s final days of operation at Disneyland in May. As a kid I never appreciated this ride much, it actually terrified me and I’d always skip it on my trips over the years. But the decision to retheme it and the debate of whether or not it should be has been a fascinating topic to dive into. The more I have the more I’ve understood what made this ride so special and realized what a misstep this decision seems to be. Ironically, removing the Uncle Remus stories from Disney Parks mirrors the plot of Song of the South when Remus is told to stop telling his stories to a young boy who is being greatly helped by the relatable lessons of Brer Rabbit and the bond he forms with Remus when his own father can’t be there for him. There is a message of unity within that many won’t see because the film isn’t easily available. As with any work of art (including all movies) these stories are open to interpretation and criticism. It’s fine to have a bad opinion of them, but it doesn’t negate the ability of others to see the value and beauty in them. It was an incredible experience to see this attraction surrounded with love by guests who were positively impacted by the creativity and talent put into it by the imagineers who made it which still resonates over 30 years years later with fans who were willing to stand in 3+ hour wait times to get one more ride on it. As with other divisive topics being more discussed these days, this one teaches that this world will never be rid of people with perspectives that conflict with your own. This is how we can learn from each other as long as there’s mutual respect, but don’t be too quick to abandon yours for the sake of others who enjoy having the power to control and change them. My favorite word of advice from Remus, “You can’t run away from trouble, there ain’t no place that far.” 💦🪵🐾 #SplashMountain #Disneyland #SongOfTheSouth #CritterCountry #BrerRabbit #BrerFox #BrerBear #Splash #TonyBaxter #MarcDavis #ValarieStewart #NickStewart #JamesBaskett #LuanaPatten #BobbyDriscoll #HattieMcDaniel #WaltDisney #DisneyParks #BriarPatch #LaughingPlace #SoonerOrLater

I recently stumbled upon the poster of "Song of the South," a 1946 Disney film that blends live-action with animation. 🐰 🦊 Directed by Harve Foster and Wilfred Jackson, the movie boasts a talented cast including James Baskett, Bobby Driscoll, and Ruth Warrick. The story is set in the post-Civil War South and follows the adventures of a young boy named Johnny and his encounters with Uncle Remus, portrayed by James Baskett. The film is known for its memorable songs, including the Academy Award-winning "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah." While watching "Song of the South," it's important to view it through the lens of its era, as its portrayal of race and culture has raised concerns over the years. However, the film also presents a vivid depiction of a different time, capturing the essence of Southern folklore. In light of the woke movement's push for political correctness, it's essential to critically assess the approach of erasing history. Canceling elements of the past does not guarantee the elimination of politically incorrect thoughts. Instead, engaging with such works allows us to learn and grow, promoting healthy discussions rather than suppressing them. Embracing the complexity of history can be more productive in fostering understanding and progress. #songofthesouth #harvefoster #wilfredjackson #ruthwarrick #bobbydriscoll #jamesbaskett #luanapatten #disney

#disney #vhs #tape #tapecollection #retro #oldmovies #vintage #vhscollection #waltdisney #songofthesouth #vhsonly #onkelremus #onkelremuswunderland #uncleremus #jamesbaskett #hattiemcdaniel #bobbydriscoll #movie #moviecollector #moviecollection

Splash Mountain opened at Disneyland in 1989, in Tokyo Disneyland and at Walt Disney World in 1992. It closed in Florida earlier this year and the very first one at Disneyland finally closed yesterday. Its theming was based on the 1946 film Song of the South featuring James Baskett as Uncle Remus. His performance earned him an honorary Oscar, making him the first African-American actor to receive an Oscar. Both U.S. attractions will undergo a retheming to remove all Song of the South references and theme it after the 2009 film The Princess and the Frog. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure as it will be called is scheduled to open at both parks in late 2024. I found a bootleg DVD of Song of the South many years ago, before its controversies became more mainstream again. It debuted Brer Fox, Brer Bear and Brer Rabbit and gave us the songs Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah and Everybody’s Got a Laughin’ Place came from. It was another live action/hand-drawn animation hybrid years after Walt Disney’s Alice Comedies and eight years before Mary Poppins. It’s based on a book written by Joel Chandler Harris, a man of Irish descent who lived on a Southern plantation during his teens, where he spent time with the slaves and learned their stories and language. That experience inspired his Uncle Remus stories. #songofthesouth #splashmountain #disney #waltdisney #uncleremus #jamesbaskett #disneyland #waltdisneyworld #blackamericanhistory #africanamericanhistory #oscarhistory

Splash Mountain Officially closed! It certainly was a fun ride, but it also taught fundamental lessons in the stories told- the importance of exploring history and culture- and the evolution of Disney! Special tribute to the voice and talent behind the song… James Baskett! During his audition for the role in “Song of the South”, James Baskett met Walt Disney, who decided his talents would be perfect in the role of Uncle Remus and the voice of Br’er Fox. Baskett had worked on Disney’s 1941 animated hit "Dumbo" as the voice of Fat Crow, and by hiring him for "Song of the South," Baskett became the first live actor to be hired by Walt Disney. #splashmountain #jamesbaskett

Academy Museum, Part 3: The last few photos documenting Disney at the Academy Museum. There is one room commemorating the Oscars, which includes facts about awards. It was cramped in there with people watching big screens, so I took what pictures I could of Disney award acknowledgments. There was also a Okoye costume from BLACK PANTHER, which was cool. There are two spaces with movie clips on screens, which also show ample Disney animating clips. Unfirtunately, Disney-branded live-action films are not represented (there are costumes on display from DICK TRACY and COLD MOUNTAIN). #blackpanther #nightmarebeforechristmas #jamesbaskett #shirleytemple #marypoppins #julieandrews #academymuseum #academymuseumofmotionpictures #disneyanimation #disneyantiques #disneyfun #disneyjoy #disneyig #disneygram #disney #waltdisney #academyawards

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the birthday of James Baskett, who portrayed “Uncle Remus” in Song Of The South (1946), and received an “honorary” Oscar in 1948 for that role making him the first black male actor to win such an award. The record towards the bottom is narrated not by James Baskett, but Dal McKennon, a voice actor. Here, he uses an exaggerated stereotypical “happy negro” voice which is nothing short of cringe. The same year Baskett received the award was also the same year he passed away. #jamesbaskett #songofthesouth

On this day in #Disney History- Feb 16, 1904: Actor James Baskett, the first live actor ever hired by Walt Disney to play in a feature film is born in Indianapolis, Indiana. Baskett would later move from his hometown to New York City with hopes of becoming an actor. As Jimmie Baskette, he appeared on Broadway with Louis Armstrong in the all-black musical revue Hot Chocolates in 1929. In 1945, he auditioned for a bit part dubbing one of the animals for a new Disney feature Song of the South, based on the Uncle Remus stories by author Joel Chandler Harris. Walt was so impressed with Baskett's talent, that he hired him on the spot for the lead role of Uncle Remus. Baskett won an honorary Academy Award in 1948 for his role of Uncle Remus (after some lobbying by popular Hollywood columnist Hedda Hopper). This made Baskett not only the first black male to ever win an Oscar, but also the first actor to win an Academy Award (although an honorary one) for a performance in a Walt Disney film. Baskett, however wasn’t even allowed to attend the film’s premiere in racially segregated Atlanta. Song of the South remains one of Walt Disney Studios most controversial films and has never been released to home media, with one of its only home releases being on laserdisc in Japan in the 1980’s. #JamesBaskett #Jimmie #JimmieBaskette #JimmyBaskette #JimBasquette #SongOfTheSouth #BrerRabbit #ZipADeeDooDah #SplashMountain #BrerFox #LaughingPlace #DisneyHistory #DisneyControversy #DisneyWorld #Disneyland #disneygram #disneyinsta #instadisney #disneyinstagram #waltdisney #waltdisneyworld #oscars #academyawards #atlanta
