When we left Lake Maggiore this morning, it was under heavy guard by several Italian services. Checkpoints and the lake itself guarded by helicopters, different police boats, and military in wetsuits on sea mobiles ( like our Navy Seals) this is preparing for the G7 summit. Apparently many staff and dignitaries were staying in hotel next to ours because it was also heavily guarded. We stopped in Lake Lugano Switzerland for quick stop. It has many of the luxurious brands. I did buy three chocolate bars in a COOP store. Lake Lugano is beautiful and very quiet. Final stop Venuce. #Italyvacation #italysites #italylakes #lakemaggiore #lakelugano #venice

The closest you will get to traveling back in time to the golden age of Rome, is Villa Adriana. In my opinion it is the best Roman ruins I have visited. They may not be as impressive as those found in Rome but I feel that the ones at Villa Adriana still maintain the atmosphere that it once had, which makes it more special than the more famous Roman sites. It is a hidden gem, hardly any tourists venture out here but it is well worth it. Built between 118 and 138 AD it was designed to be a summer home for the Emperor Hadrian. The extensive villa contains residential buildings, thermal baths, and religious temples just to name a few of the many ancient sites. Villa Adriana is known to be one of the best Roman ruins and many of the archeological finds have been placed in top museums in Europe. In 1999 it was pronounced a UNESCO World Heritage Site. #villaadriana #villaadrianativoli #tivoli #italia #italy #ancientrome #romanruins #ancientsites #archeology #arthistory #arttravel #italyhistory #italysites #italytravel

Called the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” Polignano a Mare and its coastline are characterized by stunning views of the Adriatic and by dozens of sea caves, formed into the cliff sides by the crystal blue waters. Visiting all the caves of Polignano is almost impossible since there are over 70 in total, but there are many that are accessible by boat as a must-do activity of the area. The most famous cave is Grotta Palazzese, an ancient feast hall for local nobles, and more recently, home of a Michelin-starred restaurant. #polignanoamare #puglia #adriatic #explore #adriaticsea #ciaotravels #relax #goexplore #travellifestyle #instatravel #italysites #travelguide #views #worldtravelescapes #travelitaly #italyvacation #igtravel #igitaly #igitalia #bellaitalia #ciaobella #italia #luxurytravel #travelagency #italysites #italytravelguide #seacaves #italy

Without a doubt, the Path of the Gods (known to locals as “Sentiero Degli Dei”) is the most famous hiking trail in the Amalfi Coast, with stunning views throughout the entire journey. Our favorite route to take when embarking on the Path of the Gods starts in Bomerano, a small hamlet in the town of Agerola, and ends in Nocelle, in the territory of Positano. The route can be adapted to suit anyone’s needs, but no matter which you choose, it is sure to be an unforgettable experience. Did you know the famous author of Pinocchio, Carlo Collodi, was actually named Carlo Lorenzini? Today, Collodi is home to a theme park and museum dedicated to the famous wooden puppet, where children can stroll among statues, follow adventure trails, ride merry-go-rounds, and enjoy many other activities. In this 15th century work, da Vinci abandoned the traditional fresco style for his own experimental technique, painting "The Last Supper" directly onto the walls of the Santa Maria delle Grazie church. Piazzale Michelangelo, also known as “Florence’s Terrace,” is perhaps the best spot for a panoramic view overlooking Tuscany's capital city. Named after one of the most important Florentine artists of the Renaissance, Michelangelo Buonarroti, this square was built in 1869 when Florence still was the capital of all of Italy. According to the architect, Giuseppe Poggi, it was designed to be a shrine to Michelangelo and a sort of museum where the works of the great artists in Florence would be on display. Today, the Piazzale houses restaurants and cafés where you can sit and enjoy the magnificent view at sunset. #florence #tuscany #ciaotravels #relax #goexplore #travellifestyle #instatravel #italysites #travelguide #views #worldtravelescapes #travelitaly #italyvacation #igtravel #igitaly #igitalia #bellaitalia #ciaobella #italia #luxurytravel #travelagency #italysites #italyviews #italytravelguide

Located on the western (Piedmont) side of Lake Maggiore, in an enchanting natural gulf surrounded by mountains, lie the Borromean Islands. The islands are named after the Borromeo family, a noble family from Milan who has owned them since the 17th century. Only one of these islands--Isola dei Pescatori (Fishermen's Island)--is still inhabited year-round. The other two islands--Isola Madre and Isola Bella--are home to a Baroque palace and elaborate Italian gardens, including a botanical garden abounding in rare plants and exotic flowers. The Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso is one of the most fascinating landscapes on the Lombardy side of Lake Maggiore. Beyond just its superb beauty, the history of this monastery attracts many visitors and pilgrims every year. It was founded by a rich merchant, Alberto Besozzi, who, upon being shipwrecked, found refuge in a cave and pledged devotion to St. Catherine. The Hermitage of Santa Caterina overlooks the lake and can only be reached by boat or on foot by descending 240 steps from above, but the views of the lake and the surrounding mountains make the journey well worthwhile. #santacaterina #lakemaggiore #lombardy #ciaotravels #relax #goexplore #travellifestyle #instatravel #italysites #travelguide #views #worldtravelescapes #travelitaly #italyvacation #igtravel #igitaly #igitalia #bellaitalia #ciaobella #italia #luxurytravel #travelagency #italysites #monastery

Buona Pasqua! Easter is an exceptionally important religious holiday in Italy, marked by church services--including mass at the Vatican held by the Pope--followed by families joining together at home for a festive meal. Traditional dishes eaten at Easter include artichokes, roast lamb, a sweet holiday bread called “colomba” (which means “dove”), and countless other local delicacies. In Italy, you won't find the Easter Bunny or egg hunts, but chocolate eggs are a very popular gift, especially for kids. The Monday after Easter, known as Pasquetta, was established as a national Italian holiday during the booming economic growth following WWII. It is a day for friends and family to take advantage of the (usually) warm weather and gather for a picnic or barbecue in the park or a day trip to the countryside. #pasqua #pasquetta #easter #ciaotravels #relax #goexplore #travellifestyle #instatravel #italysites #travelguide #views #worldtravelescapes #travelitaly #italyvacation #igtravel #igitaly #igitalia #bellaitalia #ciaobella #italia #luxurytravel #travelagency #italysites #vatican #rome

Castel del Monte is one of the most spectacular castles in Puglia and has been certified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1966. Built by Frederick II to defend the surrounding area, it is a formidable, imposing fortress standing tall upon a hilltop. It quickly became a symbol of Frederick II's power in the region. The octagon shape of the castle is perhaps its most iconic trait, and the number 8 is recurring throughout the structure, from the number of towers on the exterior to the number of rooms on each floor. #regionalspotlight #puglia #casteldelmonte #ciaotravels #relax #goexplore #travellifestyle #instatravel #italysites #travelguide #views #worldtravelescapes #travelitaly #italyvacation #igtravel #igitaly #igitalia #bellaitalia #ciaobella #italia #luxurytravel #travelagency #italysites

If you ever find yourself in the Veneto region and are considering a stop in Padova, the Scrovegni Chapel is not to be missed! The chapel was commissioned by banker Enrico Scrovegni to redeem his father's soul after his death, and is considered one of the masterpieces of Italian Renaissance painter Giotto. It only took two years to complete, but was so successful and influential that part of the work – the Last Judgement, which is painted on the back wall – was referenced by Michelangelo in perhaps his most spectacular creation: the Sistine Chapel. #cappellascrovegni #scrovegnichapel #ciaotravels #relax #goexplore #travellifestyle #instatravel #italysites #travelguide #views #worldtravelescapes #italianchapels #travelitaly #italyvacation #igtravel #igitaly #igitalia #bellaitalia #ciaobella #italia #luxurytravel #travelagency #italysites

Il Bombardino – “the little bomb” in Italian – was first created by the owner of a ski lodge in Lombardy. One day during a cold winter storm, craving something warm and rich to drink, he combined milk, whiskey, and zabaglione (an egg-based custard) in a pot and heated the mixture on the stove. Upon tasting the result, one of the skiers said, "damn, it's a bomb!" Since then, this warm winter cocktail has become a staple at ski resorts all over Italy; it is the perfect way to warm up after a long day on slopes! #bombardino #ciaotravels #relax #goexplore #travellifestyle #instatravel #italysites #travelguide #views #worldtravelescapes #italiancocktails #travelitaly #italyvacation #igtravel #igitaly #igitalia #bellaitalia #ciaobella #italia #luxurytravel #travelagency #italysites

Lake Resia is located in Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy's northernmost region, near the border of Austria. After WWII, a hydroelectric dam was built, merging three lakes together and flooding the villages of Curon Venosta and Resia, which were later rebuilt along the lakeshores. The only remnant of the old village of Curon Venosta is the steeple rising above the water, and local legend says that, during cold winter nights, you can still hear the bells ringing from the depths of the lake. #lakeresia #ciaotravels #relax #goexplore #travellifestyle #instatravel #italysites #travelguide #views #worldtravelescapes #altoadige #travelitaly #italyvacation #igtravel #igitaly #igitalia #bellaitalia #ciaobella #italia #luxurytravel #travelagency #italysites

One of the best ways to get a taste of real Italian life is to stroll through the local markets. There are myriad markets throughout the cities and towns of Italy, including the noteworthy Campo de' Fiori, a food market that's been around for over 150 years, right in the heart of the Eternal City of Rome. When our travelers visit the Italian capital, we love arranging a culinary walking tour, where you can experience the food history and traditions that shape local culture; explore markets, stands, and eateries; and, of course, sample delicacies from focaccia, cheeses, salumi, and gelato, to the city's traditional pasta preparations: amatriciana and cacio e pepe. #rome #ciaotravels #relax #goexplore #travellifestyle #instatravel #italysites #travelguide #views #worldtravelescapes #campodefiorimarket #travelitaly #italyvacation #igtravel #igitaly #igitalia #bellaitalia #ciaobella #italia #luxurytravel #travelagency #italyfood

Though Saint Francis is most commonly associated with Assisi, there are many other places where he left his mark. According to local legend, Saint Francis chose to build a monastery on this cliff in the hilltown of Greccio--about 100 kilometers from Rome--when he saw a firebrand hitting a rock and took it as a sign of God's will. Construction of the monastery began in 1228, and every year since then in December and January, a celebration of the nativity scene takes place on site. #greccio #ciaotravels #relax #goexplore #travellifestyle #instatravel #italysites #travelguide #views #worldtravelescapes #reiti #travelitaly #italyvacation #igtravel #igitaly #igitalia #bellaitalia #ciaobella #italia #luxurytravel #travelagency #monastery

A slice of panettone and a flute of prosecco is perhaps the most Italian way to celebrate the holidays. Panettone dates back to 1495 when, during an extravagant Christmas banquet at the Duke of Milan's palace, the dessert that had been prepared for the evening was burnt. Toni, a young boy working in the kitchen, came up with a solution: a rich brioche bread filled with raisins and candied fruit. The Duke approved, and so the tradition of "Pane di Toni" (bread of Toni) was born. Later, in 1821, Panettone also became a symbol of the Italian Liberation, when red candied cherries and green citrus replaced the raisins and fruit, mimicking the colors of the Italian flag 🇮🇹 #panettone #ciaotravels #relax #goexplore #travellifestyle #instatravel #italysites #travelguide #italianfood #worldtravelescapes #foodofmilan #travelitaly #italyvacation #igtravel #igitaly #igitalia #bellaitalia #ciaobella #italia #luxurytravel #travelagency #holidayfood

Italy doesn't produce its own coffee, nor is it the largest coffee consumer. So why is Italy so famous for it? Because Italians invented espresso! In the 19th century, Angelo Moriondo, a businessman from Turin, invented the first prototype of the coffee machine, the ancestor to the modern version we see in every "bar" in Italy today. Fun fact: in Naples, there is an ancient tradition known as "caffè sospeso" (pending coffee) that is still practiced to this day. Neapolitans love their coffee so much that they pay for two coffees, but drink only one – the second coffee is then given for free to anyone who enters the "bar" that cannot afford it. #coffee #ciaotravels #relax #goexplore #travellifestyle #instatravel #italysites #travelguide #views #worldtravelescapes #espresso #travelitaly #italyvacation #igtravel #igitaly #igitalia #bellaitalia #ciaobella #italia #luxurytravel #travelagency #naples
