Mythologie Maandag: De bouw van Rome Romulus en Remus begonnen dus met het bouwen van hun nieuwe stad. Hoe komt het dat de stad de naam Rome kreeg? Zoals bij alle broers in de mythologie die het koningschap moesten delen (denk aan Akrisios en Proitos 2-10-‘23, en Thyestes en Atreus), kregen ook Romulus en Remus ruzie over wie de koning van de nieuwe stad mocht worden. Ze lieten de beslissing aan de goden over en wachtten op een teken van hen. Remus ging naar de heuvel de Aventijn en wachtte daar, Romulus naar de heuvel de Palatijn. Remus zag als eerst gieren voorbij vliegen, 6 in totaal. Maar Romulus die iets later gieren zag, zag er 12! Remus vond dat hij recht op het koningschap omdat hij de vogels als eerste had gezien, maar Romulus vond dat hij koning moest zijn omdat hij het dubbele aantal had gezien. Er was dus nog niets besloten en de ruzie ging verder. Romulus begon stadsmuren te bouwen rondom de Palatijn. En terwijl hij bezig was, kwam zijn broer Remus. Hij maakte de muren belachelijk, de muren waren veel te klein. Hij kon er zo overheen springen en dat deed hij voor. Romulus werd woedend en doodde meteen zijn broer. Zo zou het iedereen vergaan die het durfde over zijn muren te komen. En zo werd Romulus de eerste koning van de stad en werd de stad naar hem vernoemd: Rome De Palatijn blijft een belangrijke plek, tijdens de Romeinse Keizertijd bouwden de keizer hier hun paleizen. De Latijnse naam voor de heuvel Palatium zou ook paleis gaan betekenen. Italy Day 13 (Rome Day 2) - Another insane day in Rome. This time, everything pope related. It’s Vatican day! Aventine Keyhole. St. Peter’s Square, Scavi Tour, St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican Museums, Castel Sant’Angelo. That’s a lot of Vatican. @membartlett 1. Aventine Keyhole - Social Media has supposedly blown this spot up, where you can see 3 countries at once - Malta, Italy and Rome. We were there at 9:30 am. Early bird et al. 2. St. Peter’s Square - enjoying our quickie breakfast and lunch of the day, pizza bites from deco gourmet grocery. There isn’t that much to do in St. Peter’s sq other than sit around or stand in line. 3. Scavi Office - bidding our time before the Vatican Necropolis tour! And the tour ends in the Basilica so not only does the tour take you past St. Peter’s supposed burial site, no lines! 4. St. Peter’s Basilica 5. The scrum in the Vatican’s gift shop. Trying to get my hands on some holy water. $2.50 euro! 6. Our favorite sarcaphogus at the Vatican Museum depicting the battle between Achilles and Penthesilea, a leader of the amazons. Apparently, Achilles fell in love with Penthesilea at the precise moment he killed her. Greek mythology makes no sense to me. 7. Medusa makes me sad. The story is that mortal Medusa was a beautiful maiden “seduced” by Poseidon in a temple of Athena. Such a sacrilege attracted the goddess’ wrath, and she punished Medusa by turning her hair to snakes. And then a bunch of dudes try and succeed in killing her because she turns men to stone but it’s ATHENA’S fault. As found in the Vatican Museum. 8. Bill Murray, in another life. I looked through the most magical keyhole in the world! Have you ever heard of the Aventine Keyhole? I hadn't until my tour guide for my sunrise bike tour took me to this spot on our tour. I had no idea this was even a thing. I was so confused as to why we were even there, and then he had each of us look into this magical keyhole that transports you to 3 sovereign realms in one peek. Let me explain... The keyhole itself is probably the smallest attraction in Rone but an attraction nonetheless because of what you can see through this centuries-old keyhole that draws people from far and wide to peer through the tiny hole. One glimpse through the Aventine Keyhole, and you’ll see what all the fuss is about. Be prepared there, maybe a line. This amazing view allows the viewer to see across three sovereign realms: the territory of the Knights of Malta, Italy, and the Vatican City, of course. The keyhole perfectly lines up a view through a tree-lined promenade, which perfectly frames an unobstructed view of the dome of St Peter’s Basilica. Nobody is quite sure if this was an intentional secret or a completely unintended, but fortuitous, mistake of design. To find the keyhole, you can search for the address “Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta, 3” which is located on the Aventine Hill. It's very hard to capture a shot on your phone. The best ones come from fancy cameras. It's something you have to experience in person anyway, pictures just don't do it justice. I booked my sunrise bike tour on @viator for $91 and experiencing the quiet streets of Rome without a million other people was worth getting up at 5 am on my vacation. I'd do it again and again and again. Our tour guide was fabulous and so fun. Definitely an experience I'll never forget. It completely changed my mind about Rome because I wasn't feeling it at first. Od římské pyramidy jsme se vydali dál do kopečka, rovnou na pahorek Aventin. Táhla nás sem Klíčová dírka ve vratech budovy Řádu maltézských rytířů, ale našli jsme mnohem víc. Nejen legendární klíčovou dírkou můžete vidět krásné výhledy na Baziliku sv. Petra ve Vatikánu. Samotná klíčová dírka je opravdu úžasná a za ten minutový zážitek bychom se sem klidně táhli znovu, ale celý Aventin je prostě nádherný. Otevřené zahrady s terasami s výhledy na město a klidné stinné parky. Asi nejhezčí část Říma, co jsme potkali.
