🌟 Words Matter: Fostering Inclusivity Through Mindful Language 🌈 Create a workplace where everyone thrives—increased collaboration, innovation, and a culture of respect. Our choice of words is crucial, especially in a caring organisational culture where people come first. As Sigmund Freud once said, words have magical power. At CAF Services, we firmly believe that "Acceptance without Understanding™" means accepting someone's identity and respecting the words they use to define themselves. Using inclusive and mindful language can help promote diversity and increase employee satisfaction, productivity and a positive organisational culture. Meet Cynthia Fortlage, a seasoned leader with a unique perspective on gender diversity. With experience spanning corporate, LGBTQ+, and feminist leadership, Cynthia leverages her gender-diverse lived experience to guide organisations through the sometimes problematic language of gender diversity, helping them avoid pitfalls that impact individuals or the organisation. Her mission? To create safe spaces where everyone feels a sense of belonging. Are you worried you might get it wrong? Don't let fear hold you back. We're here to help you navigate challenges and learn along the way. Here's what clients have to say: "Cynthia challenged our thinking by providing valuable insight and a different perspective to the questions we were working through. Let’s talk about why we should avoid the phrases “suffering from” and “afflicted from” 🗣👇 Phrases such as these can contribute to the stigmatisation of individuals with mental health conditions, such as depression. Instead, when we use inclusive and respectful phrases such as “experiencing” or “living with,” we emphasise the person’s experiences without attributing them to their identity or insinuating that they are a ‘victim’ of their circumstances. Let’s continue to work together to create an inclusive and equitable society where everyone’s experiences are respected 🙌 [Visual description: image is designed in bright yellow and blue. At The Conversation Project we've heard from LGBTQ+ individuals about the importance of documenting wishes. ⁣ 🗣️ Look at our Conversation Starter Guide to think about your own wishes and values. Think about who you’d like to select as your health care proxy. Consider what you’d want them to know about your health care wishes if there’s ever a time you can’t speak for yourself.⁣ ⁣ 👭 👬 Select a health care proxy. If you want help, review our Guide to Choosing a Health Care Proxy. If you select a partner, chosen family, friend, neighbor, or community member who isn’t legally recognized as your spouse or family, it’s especially important to document your choice.⁣ ⁣ 📝 Record your wishes for your health care with an advance directive — an important legal document about your choices. In the United States, the website Caring Info can help you find the right forms in your state. You can also ask your doctor’s office.⁣ ⁣ 🤝 We recognize that not everyone has a strong relationship with their family of origin. If there is someone who you do NOT want to be involved in your health care decisions, document that as well. Make sure your health care proxy knows and understands, too.⁣ ⁣ 🏥 Proactively share this information with your health care providers so they have it on file. They may not bring up the topic themselves (especially if you are currently in good health), but you can ask for your wishes to be added to your medical record.⁣ ⁣ 💻 If you do not have close people to turn to for support with concerns like health care, see our blog post with tips to keep in mind to help make sure your health care aligns with your goals.⁣ ⁣ 🔗 Link in bio to read the full blog, Focusing on what matters most to LGBTQ+ individuals⁣. ⁣ ⁣ #LGBTQ #LGBTQCommunity #nonbinary #inclusivelanguage #queer #inclusionmatters #LGBTQhealth #LGBTQHealthcare #healthcarewishes #freetomove #HealthEquity #LGBTQYouth #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth #MHAM2023 #LGBTQHealth #TCP #TheConversationProject #PlanningAhead #LGBTQCaregivers #LGBTQCaregiver #caregiver #caregiving #caregiversupport #caregiveradvocate #transgender #SeriousIllness #lgbtqcaregiversupport #dementiacaregivers #lgbtqresearch #lgbtqpride

LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK// It really grinds our gears to still see "bride" and "groom" being used as catch-all terms in this day and age! Certain words jar me. Sometimes the reason is obvious. Other times it's more of a niggling feeling that calls for some deeper thinking 🤔. So I'm creating a series of posts called #WordsToThink About. The idea is to share my own thinking or learning about a word or phrase and to find out what others know or feel. Seemingly harmless common terms can carry hurtful impact for some people. By continuing to use them thoughtlessly we establish our cultural and societal attitudes. But if we take time to be curious, to poke and prod and question why we do and say certain things, we can work towards better inclusion and equity for all 👣. For me, it's not about being *woke* or righteous. I certainly don't have all the answers. It's about being curious and looking more closely at how we communicate. It's about asking why and, more importantly, how can we do better? Are there words or phrases that don't sit right with you? Let me know so I can add them to the series 👇. Image description: A blue square with the words ‘Why think about words?’. To the right, a white semi-circle shows a person's silhouette with multicoloured ribbons flowing from their head. The bottom of the tile reads ‘Words to Think About’ and shows the Tanya Hollis Writes logo.

Happy Global Accessibility Awareness Day from Birdability! Thursday, May 16, 2024, marks the 13th Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). The purpose of GAAD is to get everyone talking, thinking, and learning about digital access/inclusion and people with different disabilities and access needs. In celebration of Global Accessibility Awareness Day, Birdability reaffirms our commitment to digital access and inclusion and invites you all to learn more with us! There is not just one way to help create accessibility, as people's needs are different, but a few areas to invest in for digital access and inclusion on social media are: 🔵Alt Text & Visual Descriptions: Ensure every image includes alt text and visual descriptions. Visual descriptions are more universal and can be longer. 🔵Accessible Text: Use high-contrast, plain language. Limit emoji use. 🔵Subtitles & Captions: Including these in all videos is easier than ever using tools provided by the platforms we use. Captions can help people access content, improve comprehension, and help visual learners, too! 🔵Descriptive Links: Use meaningful link text, not “click here” in order to help folks using screen readers and other adaptive technology make sure they know what information they are accessing! 🔵Use Camel Case hashtags, capitalizing each word #ForScreenReaders ! 🔵Avoid Acronyms & GIFs: Explain abbreviations and avoid GIFs in order to create the most accessible posts for folks with different neurotypes and those who use adaptive technology to access social media. What are other ways that you help make social media posts #AccessibleForAll ? Let’s make birding-related content accessible to everyone! #Birdability #Accessibility #Inclusion #GlobalAccessibilityAwarenessDay #DigitalInclusion #AltText #InclusiveLanguage Find out lots more at https://accessibility.day/resources/ Image description in the comments!

In “The Conscious Style Guide,” I present conscious language as flexible and creative because every situation is unique. Choosing the same language for every context is like wearing the same outfit to work, to school, to bed. Flexing with the context is something people do naturally. We often use a different vocabulary when speaking to young children. Or we avoid words with unwanted associations to avoid distracting from the main message. In my book, I go deep into the influence of context upon the meaning of content. An awareness of context—what happened in the past, the circumstances of the message, who the source is, and who the audience is—helps us make linguistic choices that reduce the possibility that our words are misconstrued or unintentionally cause harm. “By encouraging us to consider the real impact of our words, Karen Yin’s intelligent and fair-minded book upends the conventional wisdom that writers alone, writing for some ‘ideal reader,’ always know what’s best. To write consciously is to be aware of and compassionate toward the actual people who determine not only the success but also the meaning of any work. With its emphasis on critical thinking and the fluid interplay between content and context, The Conscious Style Guide will inspire writers and their editors to make choices that not only respect readers but, in the process, bring us all a little closer to the truth.”―Russell Harper, principal reviser of “The Chicago Manual of Style” Two weeks left to preorder! 📖 --- #linguaggio #libriconsigliati #librifemministi #bibliografia #linguisticaitaliana #linguaggioconsapevole #linguaggioinclusivo #inclusivelanguage #comunicazione

Ever thought about the significance of language in your DEI efforts? It's not just about words - it's about meaning; language shapes our perceptions, beliefs, and connections. When we use inclusive language, we create a shared understanding and foster a sense of belonging. Every word we choose carries weight, molding not just how we perceive ourselves, but also how we view others. By selecting our words with care, we not only strengthen personal connections but also deepen our commitment to DEI initiatives. Let's use the power of semantics to build bridges, spark conversations, and drive meaningful change together! #DEI #InclusiveLanguage #MeaningfulConnections"

The Importance of Using Inclusive Language: When it comes to discussing mental health, the words we choose can either perpetuate prejudice and discrimination or promote acceptance and compassion. As a community, we each play a pivotal role in one another's mental wellness. The language we use to talk about mental health can either contribute to the stigma surrounding it or help reduce it. Using inclusive language and being kind when discussing mental illness is crucial for reducing stigma and promoting a supportive environment. By choosing words that respect and acknowledge the diversity of human experiences and identities, we can empower ourselves and others to find the help they need. Let's work together to create a culture that encourages open conversations about mental health and supports those who are struggling. #MentalHealthMonth #InclusiveLanguage #MentalWellness #MindMatters #YouMatter #MHAM24 #BreakTheStigma #TransformingMinds #EmbracingVulnerability #MentalHealthMovement  #Inclusivity

The way we use language significantly influences our perspectives and beliefs. Consider the significance of terms when describing behaviors, like labeling someone as “traumatized,” using ambiguous terms like “complex” (often signaling a lack of understanding), or employing offensive labels like “burden” (which can exacerbate feelings of worthlessness and suicidal thoughts). Do these labels truly help us comprehend an individual with autism and their needs, or do they oversimplify or marginalize them? #LanguageInfluence #PerspectiveShift #BeliefSystem #BehavioralDescription #LabelingImpact #Traumatized #Complexity #UnderstandingAutism #EmpathyMatters #StigmaAwareness #MentalHealth #SuicidePrevention #InclusiveLanguage #RespectfulCommunication
