A pleasant evening under the lights...... First, I just want to say how fortunate I feel to be a part of this IG community. This place is increasingly feeling like a stalwart friendship to me; no matter how long I've been away, you guys are right there to welcome me when I get back without missing a beat. You all mean more to me than I can adequately convey. In my last post, I shared that I was concerned I would miss out on the show by the time I got to my intended destination last Friday. This spot has been on my potential target list for Northern lights for many months now, but I hadn't had a chance to actually stand here and scout it out prior to that Friday's show, so I was taking a leap of faith. It was a total payoff - the leading dock, the open sky, and easy access made the trek fruitful. And then, of course, that raging solar storm outdid itself, filling the sky with vibrant purples and greens. It's been more than a week since that magical night, and I'm still pinching myself that we were all lucky enough to experience it here in our home country. This image was made during the second big surge, and it was just amazing to watch the pillars pulse in the sky.

Took a trip through my photo archive recently in search of a specific photo. Of course, that led me on several side quests down memory lane. One of those side quests brought me to the clam flats Downeast with my brother and grandfather. Some of my favorite photos I’ve ever made are portraits of my grandpa. I’m still in awe of how he was in his late 80s in these photos and had the energy, interest and strength to wade through the mudflats and do the physically demanding work required to dig clams.
I have been in a total funk photography-wise for months now because the weather has been so overwhemingly unfavorable - non-stop overcast and clouds much of the time. In fact, I've been soooo absent that a few fellow shooters reached out to ask if I was ok, noting my long-term absence. While it was nice to be missed, I couldn't shake out of the weather-induced malaise. Since the New Year, any good Northern Lights activity has happened when all of New England has been completed socked in with 100% cloud cover, so I'll confess that I initially felt apathetic when notifications about an impending massive solar storm began rolling in late last week. When it looked like a small corridor of cloudless space would actually be likely, that apathy turned into a tiiiiiiny bit of hope, so I decided to take a chance. I had a momentary panic when the predicted solar storm slammed Earth about 7 hours earlier than predicted - I worried that storm would dissipate before I could get out for it. Miraculously, that didn't happen - in fact, not only did the powerful solar storm surge alllllllll night long, but the cloud-free area actually widened too. I ran all over Southern Maine like a lunatic, soaking in this incredibly rare opportunity. This event was like nothing I've ever seen before; I never imagined I'd see the Aurora so powerfully displayed in my own home state. I could actually see the lights moving prominently in the sky with my own eyes, and I could even make out some of the color faintly. Cameras do not have the same limitations that human eyes do - they are much more color-sensitive than our eyes are, so what you see below is what was actually happening - no embellishment needed. Mind-blowing! This was a night I won't soon forget, and I'll be sharing several more images I was lucky enough to make that night. This image made over a small lake outside of Gray, Maine is one of my favorites.

After chasing them for what feels like a very long time and learning so much more about space weather and its effect on charging particles in the atmosphere than I ever thought I would, I finally did it along with so many others across the world! I finally captured the Northern Lights! Bucket list item complete! I've been off Instagram and Facebook for a while now. The reality is I was having a hard time not comparing myself to so many others and it was making me lose sight of why I got into photography in the first place, to get out in nature and destress from all the worries of everyday life. I think due to how social media is so intertwined with everything now, everyone feels this at some point whether constructive or otherwise. I do plan on beginning to post again but on my terms without putting pressure on myself so I can continue to be excited, enjoy, and grow in photography. Well, that was an experience! I’ve gone Aurora-chasing a number of times since we moved to New Hampshire, only to be shut out each time, so I kept my hopes in check. It was cloudy and showery in Lebanon, but the forecast for Western Maine called for clearing, so I took the chance to shoot up to Rangely. For me, one of the most fascinating things about being an artist is watching my work take on a life and identity of its own after I share it with the world. We’re all seeking connection and community as we navigate this wild journey called life, and I see art as an avenue to see and be seen, to share in the human experience, and maybe for a moment feel less alone, more understood. This has been on my mind a lot lately following the release of Young Love or Something Like It. This book is the result of countless small steps, consistency, and commitment to trying my best to write one poem every day no matter how good, “bad”, or cringey I thought it was. I didn’t know where I was going when I set this goal for myself, all I knew was I enjoyed the practice of making sense of the world through poetry and the challenge to stay creatively sharp. Fast forward more than a decade, and I can literally hold years of work in my hands. I am so incredibly proud of this book. When I published it, I had no idea if anyone would even read it, let alone like it (insert a litany of intrusive thoughts here) but it felt important and cathartic for me to see this project through from start to finish. What I could not foresee was the overwhelming love I would receive from all of you. I feel supported in a way that’s far greater than I ever imagined. I’ve sold out of every physical copy I have (don’t worry, I’ve ordered another batch if any of you want signed copies and if you’ve paid already but haven’t picked it up, I’ve set one aside for you)! This brings me to the best part of the whole experience, connecting and re-connecting with YOU. As I said at the top of this message, connection is what it’s all about and that is precisely what’s happening in response to this book. Yes, we live in tense times, but this process has been a wonderful reminder of how much love is in the world, how many of us are out there spreading it, and how even more of us need to receive it. Vulnerability is scary but, my god, it’s rewarding. Tell the people you love that you love them. Life is too short not to. I love you all, thank you for making this lady and her big ol’ heart feel so so special. ❣️
