Pilgrimage to see the Portinari Altarpiece, which (understandably) wasn’t in Berlin for last year’s Hugo van der Goes show. Utterly astonishing painting (would be incredible to see it restored: very foggy varnish etc). Fun/interesting to stand a while and people watch, accompanied by the sound of the alarm going off at Botticelli’s Adoration. Hans Belting è uno degli studiosi d’arte più importanti nel panorama contemporaneo. Egli è fondatore dell’antropologia delle immagini e di un approccio antropologico allo studio dell’arte. Ha dedicato monografie a quasi ogni periodo della storia dell’arte, ma il suo campo di interesse maggiore è l’arte moderna. Uno dei suoi studi più interessanti è Spiegel der Welt (1992), tradotto presso Carocci editore nel 2016, dedicato all’arte fiamminga del Quattrocento. La pittura fiamminga del XV secolo ha per Belting qualcosa di miracoloso, per il fatto di introdurre una forma di naturalismo basata su una tecnica pittorica impeccabile, rompendo i legami con quella medievale sostanzialmente iconica. L’uso di questa nuova tecnica ha tra i suoi più grandi rappresentanti Jan Van Eyck, noto per una precisione stilistica, per una cura del dettaglio, per l’abilità nella resa plastica degli oggetti (vetrate, tessuti, pelle) e per un’approssimazione quasi perfetta alla tecnica della prospettiva (ancora ignota ai fiamminghi) basata su un’attenta osservazione della profondità. Uno dei meriti dell’arte fiamminga, come suggerisce il sottotitolo del libro di Belting, è anche l’introduzione del quadro [Gemälde o Tafelbild]: prima dei fiamminghi la pittura era su parete, su pale d’altare, oppure in forma di miniatura su pergamena; i fiamminghi sono i primi a servirsi del quadro e a praticare una pittura anche laica, come i ritratti e le opere su commissione: per questo basti pensare ad alcuni dei capolavori di Van Eyck come I coniugi Arnolfini (1434), L’uomo col turbante rosso (1433; presunto autoritratto) e la Madonna del cancelliere Rolin (1434-36). Altri due maestri della pittura fiamminga, a cui Belting dedica un capitolo ciascuno, sono Hugo van der Goes, ricordato per la vivacità cromatica e per l’impianto teatrale che hanno i suoi dipinti, con personaggi fortemente espressivi e in movimento, e Hyeronimus Bosch, che mette in crisi il realismo della tradizione fiamminga all’insegna della fantasmagoria, del grottesco, del mostruoso, del capriccio, con immagini di mostri e di realtà immaginarie o l’elaborazione di temi letterari (la nave dei folli, il giardino delle delizie).

Executed by Hugo van der Goes around 1470-1475 in the Netherlands, the Monforte Altarpiece takes its name from the monastery of Monforte the Lemos in Galicia, Spain, where it was housed from the mid sixteenth century until it was acquired by the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin in the early twentieth century. Despite van der Goes’ renown during his short career, the panel slipped into obscurity until the late nineteenth century. The identity of its patron and its original purpose and location remain unknown. The altarpiece originally featured two lost side panels, forming a triptych, as evidenced by the surviving iron hinges on the sides. These were probably detached before its arrival in the monastery and, as suggested by later copies, represented scenes of the birth and circumcision of Christ. Additionally, a top extension, which once gave the panel an inverted T shape, was removed to accommodate it to the monastery’s architectural space. The bottom of two flowy robes above Mary’s head hint the presence of a group of angels. Although we’re no longer able to admire the altarpiece in its original form, its exceptional quality is still evident. The richness of colour and the extraordinary level of naturalism and detail achieved by the artist -the rendering of hands is just phenomenal- coupled with the tangible quality of fabrics complement the serene composition and solemnity of the scene, creating a perfect balance between the physical and spiritual realms. #hugovandergoes #northernrenaissance

Nur wenige Maler lassen sich in die direkte Nachfolge des Hugo van der Goes stellen. Jean Hey ist sicher einer von ihnen. Während seines Aufenthaltes in Hugos Werkstatt im Rood Klooster bei Brüssel scheint Hey dessen Maltechnik besonders verinnerlicht zu haben. Um 1477 brach er schließlich nach Frankreich auf, wo er zunächst in den Diensten Jean Rolins, dem Kardinal von Autun, stand. Später wurde er von Herzog Pierre II. de Bourbon an dessen Hof in Moulins berufen. Dieses Madonnenbild, das sicherlich in der Spätzeit des Malers entstand, zeigt Maria in der Halbfigur vor goldenem Grund hinter einer mit Brokatstoff bedeckten Brüstung. Auf dieser sitzt das nackte Christuskind auf einem Kissen aus grünem Samt. Maria ist in einen roten Mantel mit blauem Futter gehüllt. Sie hat ihr Kleid aufgeschnürt und das Untergewand zur Seite geschlagen, um das Kind zu stillen. Christus aber greift nicht nach der Brust, sondern spielt mit seinen Händen und den Fingern der Mutter. Um die beiden hat sich jeweils ein Engelspaar versammelt. Mit dieser Komposition steht das Madonnenbild einer Anbetung des Kindes sehr nahe, die Hey um 1490 schuf und die sich heute in den @fineartsbelgium befindet. Gleichzeitig erinnert das Gesicht der jungen Muttergottes an die Brüsseler Tafel, ebenso aber an das früheste, Jean Hey zugeschriebene Werk der Geburt Christi im #museerolin in #autun , in der sich der Maler stilistisch noch sehr stark von Hugo van der Goes beeinflusst zeigt. Die Brüsseler Tafel bildet aber nicht nur die kompositorische Vorlage für unser kleines Madonnenbild, sondern auch für das große Triptychon in der Kathedrale von Moulins, nach dem Jean Hey als ‚Meister von Moulins‘ zunächst benannt wurde, bevor man seine Signatur auf der Rückseite einer Tafel mit dem Ecce Homo, ebenfalls in #brussels entdeckte. Trittico Portinari 🖌️ Hugo Van Der Goes ⏳ 1477-1478 Pannello Centrale L'Adorazione del Bambino, basata su una delle visioni di santa Brigida di Svezia, ha luogo in uno scenario grandioso, in cui figure celesti e terrene sono rappresentate a fianco, come se si incontrassero. Nel pannello centrale la stalla è dipinta come una loggia con colonne posta al margine di una città della quale si intravedono alcuni edifici: si tratta dell'allusione al palazzo abbandonato di Re Davide, lontano progenitore di Cristo, riconoscibile per il simbolo dell'arpa scolpito sulla lunetta del portale e per l'iscrizione con la sua profezia di un bambino che nascerà da una vergine. Al centro campeggia la figura di Maria, tutt'altro che stilizzata, bensì vibrantemente umana e luminosa, inginocchiata e con le mani giunte e rivolte in basso, al Bambino poggiato in terra tra raggi che ne rivelano la santità: si tratta della rappresentazione di Gesù come "Luce del mondo", infatti la sua figura rischiara alcuni degli astanti, come si vede bene ad esempio nell'angelo sopra di esso. Researching the dimensions of techne in our different research project, we realized, that our view on artworks has shifted. Depictions of techne regularly catch our eyes. In our series techne in detail we want to share thisperspective with you. Tomorrow is Three Kings Day. In Hugo van der Goes’ ‚Adoration of the Magi‘ from the 15th century, the artist depicts precious goldsmith works and expensive textiles. These objects and materials are painted very detailed and true to life. Through this the painting reflects the scene vividly and brings it to the present of the then contemporary viewer, who must have seen the adoration as an event with a living significance. Hugo van der Goes, Saint Genevieve, 1479, reinterpreted in @lego after the original @kunsthistorischesmuseumvienna Today, 3 January, is the Feast Day of Saint Genevieve. #otd Genevieve lived in Paris, and in 451, led a marathon prayer session, which led to Attila's soldiers being diverted away from the city. Genevieve experienced frequent visions of angels and demons. Her candle on her journey from her cell to the Basilica of Saint Denis, extinguished, and miraculously relit. The young women who accompanied her were afraid and asked her to hold the candle up, and at this moment, the wick lit again. This led to her attribute being a candle, a devil, and an angel. Here, Hugo van der Goes depicted a devil blowing out her candle. It's a grisaille masterpiece, showing his skill at depicting a statue with a wisp of smoke wafting from the candle as the devil blows it out. This painting must have been inspired by the idea of the paragone and the skill of painters being able to paint incredibly real sculptures. Mary and Joseph on the Way to Bethlehem (Portinari Altarpiece) Hugo van der Goes, Uffizi Gallery, Florence The journey The pain is sharp — excruciating — as the weight of the child presses upon her bladder. The donkey shifts under her. Each bump in the road brings new pain. And yet, she smiles. They were fortunate to join a caravan leaving Nazareth. This journey is not one to take alone; there is safety and comfort in a pack. Ninety grueling miles ahead of them. The caravan snakes behind them. It is a motley mix of beasts and beings and belongings. Her husband walks before her, leading the donkey protectively, lovingly, gently. She smiles at her husband, her partner in this mystery. Most will cover 20 miles a day but, in her condition, they decide to take it slower. The couple moves to the middle as the swift overtake them. The weather is cold, biting. Without much to disrupt their gust, winds whip along the flatlands of the Jordan River. She senses whispers of something wonderful. This will be a special place. She stokes her stomach and smiles. The landscape changes as does the weather; the sky opens and rain torrents upon them. Water pools in the valley floor below them. Trees seem to sprout in front and to the sides as they move into a forest. They hear shouts from the front of the line. Was it a lion? A bear? A ferocious boar? She shakes her head at her spouse, knowing they will be protected, she smiles. Each meal is dried bread dipped in oil or herbs. And in the freezing night they gather around the fire to hear stories of bandits and robbers. Then stories shift to ones they have all heard before; a king, a savior, Immanuel. At last they move over the hills surrounding Jerusalem, into Bethlehem. Uphill. Downhill. With each pain comes. The couple slows to the end of the procession.
