Yesterday before the eclipse we received a delightful surprise… 🥰 Our first Olive Egger egg!! In October we purchased 6 chicks from Wild Row Farm to add some green and blue egg layers to our flock. When you buy chicks it often is a gamble whether they will be hens or roosters. Ideally you want more hens than roosters because they will lay your eggs and too many roosters will fight. Well lucky for us 5/6 of our chickens grew into hens and yesterday they blessed us with their first egg! Now admittedly our chickens keep us guessing when it comes to where they will lay (wait for my next post)… But I’m hoping to crack the code on their nesting preferences soon! Isn’t she beautiful? I reminder the first time I saw a Swedish Flower Hen… I couldn’t believe how beautiful she was. I had a hard time finding them at that time! Turned out someone who had gotten some from Saskatchewan and some from Manitoba was willing to let me have them. I don’t remember his name but I do remember how happy I was to bring them onto our farm! Last year I did rehome most of mine as I was trying to figure out who to keep and who to let go… I really did want to downsize to 6 breeds but somehow I still have seven! So glad I kept a few because I still am absolutely in love with them and would’ve been sorry if I had let them go completely. This life with chickens is complicated. Speckles make me happy.🖤 Welsummers are a breed that lay Speckled eggs and although not every egg comes out with these amazing speckles you do get just enough to make it worth having that breed! I’ve wanted these for the past 10 years and some landed in my lap last summer. I couldn’t say no. I’m loving the hens. They obviously got a lot of interactions with the person who raised them as they are incredibly friendly. The breed is also very beautiful to look at.
