Mill Creek Canyon Earthworks Park, located at the entrance of the valley, east of downtown #kent , designed in 1982 by Herbert Bayer. The area was destined to be an earthen dam for a water detention system containing catch basins and stream-flow controls to manage stormwater. However, the area should have offered the function of a public park. Bayer’s piece was sited adjacent to a residential community and indeed served as a public park. In between taking down and setting up exhibitions, we found ourselves @tate modern this past week viewing an exhibition centered on the Blue Rider (Der Blaue Reiter), an informal collective of modern expressionist artists, led by artists Wassily Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter and Franz Marc. The group, which came together in 1911 in Munich, coalesced around their mutual belief in the deep spiritual significance of artistic expression. Those of you who have taken our free tours know we talk a lot about Kandinsky’s influence on Herbert Bayer. In many ways, the Blue Rider group opened the door for Bayer and other artists at the Bauhaus to enjoy a freedom of expression that was all encompassing and all consuming for a short but highly productive period of time. Between 1911 and 1925, Walter Gropius and Adolf Meyer completed three phases of building for the Fagus-Werke, or Fagus shoe factory, at Alfeld on the Leine River (near Hannover). During the third and final phase, the firm engaged the Bauhaus advertising workshop, under the leadership of Herbert Bayer, to design publicity materials. These included a set of standard-sized (DIN A5), hole-punched brochures describing the manufacturing elements Fagus produced, and standard-sized (DIN A6) calling cards for its representatives. This week at after school ART CLUB we were inspired by two artists - Jesper Waldersten (Swedish contemporary artist & illustrator) who inspired us with his expressive portraits and Herbert Bayer (Austrian-American graphic designer and painter, one of the Bauhaus’s most influential students, teachers, and proponents, advocating the integration of all arts throughout his career). We have used his photocollage ‘Lonely Metropolitan’ from 1932 when experimenting with reduction monoprinting. Jesper Waldersten was born in Stockholm in 1969. After completing five years with one of Sweden’s leading adverting firms, two as Art Director, he resigned in order to develop his drawing interest, a spare-time occupation that until then had come no further than editing comic strips. His stream of contributions to Dagens Nyheter, Sweden’s largest morning daily, brought him a wide public following, and from 1999 to 2005 he produced some hundred illustrations which won him three gold medals in the world championship Best of Newspaper Design, in addition to numerous silver medals and other prizes. Waldersten has had three one-man exhibitions, participated in group-shows and published seven books under his own name, a record of his work that clearly reveals his development from keen satirist to individualist and expressive artist. He has realized several murals for public and private clients, and been awarded two of Sweden’s top art grants. He has not abandoned advertising either, working nowadays for such prestigious clients as Absolut Vodka, Filippa K fashion company and The Swedish Arts council. It’s Herbert Bayer’s birthday! 🎂 In the 1940s, Bayer was responsible for coming up with a large campaign that helped turn Aspen from a sleepy mountain town to the behemoth ski resort it is today.
Herbert Bayer was born on this day in1900. Bayer studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar with Johannes Itten, Paul Klee and Oskar Schlemmer from 1921 until 1925. He also studied under Vasily Kandinsky in the Bauhaus mural painting workshop between 1922 and 1925. In 1925, after joining the institution’s faculty, he became the head of the newly created studio for printing and advertising. His work as a teacher comprised advertising, design and typography, integrating photographs into graphic compositions. He left the Bauhaus in 1928. In 1930, he designed the exhibition for the Deutscher Werbund in Paris together with Walter Gropius and László Moholy-Nagy. He also worked as a commercial artist and exhibition designer until 1938. In 1938 Bayer emigrated to the US, working there as a corporate design consultant, teaching at the Aspen, Colorado Culture Center and designing magazines, catalogues and exhibitions, among others 50 Jahre Bauhaus (Stuttgart 1968). He began to photograph in 1928 and most of his photographs have been created between 1928 and 1938. I was up pretty late last night trying to render out 200 frames to convert to a video and was thoroughly disappointed when I woke up to a gpu error at frame 35. Spent two hours this morning reading forums and all I could find was an internal python script error that I have 0 idea how to address. So while driving to DC this morning I rendered 7 frames total on my laptop at every rest stop, red light, and gas station we stopped at. So this is a lil visual of the video planned, whenever I can fix my gpu. Text location isn’t my favorite but this is also a rough draft, so it’s only up from here. BAUHAUS AUSSTELLUNG July-September 1923 Art: Herbert Bayer Herbert Bayer (April 5, 1900 – September 30, 1985) was an Austrian and American graphic designer, painter, photographer, sculptor, art director, environmental and interior designer, and architect. He was instrumental in the development of the Atlantic Richfield Company's corporate art collection until his death in 1985. Bayer apprenticed under the artist Georg Schmidthammer in Linz. Leaving the workshop to study at the Darmstadt Artists' Colony, he became interested in Walter Gropius's Bauhaus manifesto. After Bayer had studied for four years at the Bauhaus under such teachers as Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and László Moholy-Nagy, Gropius appointed Bayer director of printing and advertising. In the spirit of reductive minimalism, Bayer developed a crisp visual style and adopted use of all-lowercase, sans serif typefaces for most Bauhaus publications. Bayer is one of several typographers of the period including Kurt Schwitters and Jan Tschichold who experimented with the creation of a simplified more phonetic-based alphabet. From 1925 to 1930, Bayer designed a geometric sans-serif titled Proposal for a Universal Typeface (Herbert Bayer, universal) that existed only as a design and was never actually cast into real type. These designs are now issued in digital form as Bayer Universal (P22 Type Foundry Bauhaus Set). The design also inspired ITC Bauhaus and Architype Bayer, which bears comparison with the stylistically related typeface Architype Schwitters. In 1923 Bayer met the photographer Irene Bayer-Hecht at the first large Bauhaus exhibit in Weimar. They married in 1925, separated in 1928, had a daughter, Julia Alexandra, in 1929, and divorced in 1944. Last week i had a very vivid dream, don’t remember much but I woke up and had to write down “The More You Understand it, the Less You Feel the Need to Use it.” The first visual representation that came to mind was a disassembled gun for obvious reasons, but I feel that there’s more there, whether that be in terms of introspective thinking, or emotional intelligence, I just think the phrasing needs to be changed for the message to be more clear and not viewed in direct relation to guns. Either way, I thought the modeling would be quick. It took days to model everything, the geometry is very bad, there are a good number of artifacts but imma say it again we posting progress. I’m writing and designing a lil mini magazine spread cause I love editorial design, and like most 22 year olds there is an incessant lost feeling. I forget where I read it but the term “ambiguous structural position” is the best way to describe it. Anyway, this is one of the few mock-ups i made to see what visual direction I wanna go in. I really like Frazier Bane, and utopian scholastic so the textures on this gone have to change. This schloppy lil guy was sculpted in blender, with oil Pastel scanned in for the head. It feels a lil bit forced, but I’m likin the body where it’s at now and nip and belly button hairs are next. I want the visuals to evoke a feeling of desolation so the white bg will probably go, and have the light of the computer be the only source of light. If anybody has any thoughts, or different ideas of where to take this I would love to hear. Appreciate you if you read all of this. Very excited to experiment with different types of media before we roll anything official out. Herbert Bayer, el diseñador gráfico, tipógrafo, pintor y arquitecto mas importante e innovador de la Bauhaus; abarcando también el área de la fotografía (1920) y sobretodo con el collage. Fue estudiante de la Bauhaus, y Gropius lo invitó a dirigir el taller de tipografía e imprenta. Bayer desempeño un buen papel en el desarrollo de una nueva tipografía que utilizaba tipos de palo seco, filetes gruesos y retículas sistematizadas para conseguir composiciones limpias y lógicas. Las consideraciones de estilo y expresión fueron subordinadas a la pureza de la geometría y las exigencias de la funcionalidad, este método condujo a Bayer a diseñar una tipografía con formas de letras tan esenciales que se entendieran como universales. El tipo Universal diseñado por Bayer en 1925, representa una reducción de las formas de letras romanas a simples formas geométricas. Este tipo de letra abarcó a la industria y a la tecnología y se adaptó a las técnicas de reproducción en masa y métodos racionalizados. Had a cool opportunity to be one of three designers to submit artwork for @arthurjamess1 new short film “The Sound She Knows”. I submitted three of the four designs I made and this was my favorite. I am not very good at all with traditional mediums but 400 photoshop layers makes anything look good. My biggest take away from the rough cut was the intersectionality and almost interchangeability of medication and religion as a means of salvation, or a cure to serious, unavoidable issues.
