Late 1976. The Adverts go into a Fulham rehearsal room and record a few songs on cassette tape to prepare for their first gigs in the new year. Who knows, maybe a record company would be interested to hear the band too? They weren’t…but the cassette found its way onto eBay and in 2023 Henry Rollins saw it for sale and bought it. He discussed the idea of releasing it with his friend Ian Mackaye and they went ahead and got the recordings transferred at Tonal Park in Takoma Park MD. Then he approached TV Smith and asked if he would agree to the recordings being released. He was pleased with the quality of the finished result and said yes. The recordings were then mastered by expert sound engineer Mikey Young with impressive results. Now Rollins has released the five tracks in conjunction with In The Red Records and his own 2.13.61 label on a 45 r.p.m. 12” clear red vinyl, with extensive sleeve notes from himself and Dave Thompson. Never saw this one until a few days ago. My girlfriend had it, though it was still sealed! So we cracked it open and watched it for the first time together. This is the oldest video footage of Henry speaking that is commercially available, recorded by Joe Cole shortly before his death, part of what was planned to be a series of cheap recordings of Henry speaking. That didn't work out, but this is still a cool document. If you are familiar with his earliest spoken word albums, some of these stories will sound familiar. The version of his story about The Eternal is a highlight on this one. He was putting the final touches on the second season of his IFC show, filmed his footage for Wrong Turn 2, continued slaving away on his radio show . . . Oh, yeah, and he also geared up for and went on what would be the last Rollins Band tour to date (probably ever). He reunited with the Melvin era of the classic lineup and they worked fiercely and played hard. But this tour made one thing clear to ol' Hank. He was not interested in continuing to make music in that cultural atmosphere. He didn't want to become one of those legacy acts putting out less and less relevant records and touring just to play the old hits. That runs totally counter to his philosophy of always moving forward. So the biggest through theme on this one is Hank's final decision to leave music behind.
