The journey of self-discovery can be like a scary roller coaster ride at the amusement park. 🎢 You get on it thinking it is going to be thrilling, then you realize pretty quickly that it’s filled with twists and turns and ups and downs that place you on the verge of throwing up, while simeltaneously filling you with exhilration. It can be both addictive and terrifying and many times, make you question your own sanity. 🤪 When I started my own journey, I had no idea where it would take me. That was both part of the fun, but also the pain. I’ve witnessed hundreds of people go through their own experiences as an energetics practitioner and teacher and what became clear to me is that there are core foundational components that we all need to have in our personal toolbox to make the journey a little less dramatic. The concept of instrumentality in facilitation is present in many modalities of helping professions, but because they are not widely known, the uninitiated experience it as intangible, otherworldly, or “that woo-woo shit.” Not because it isn’t real, but rather it is unexplored in the noble, mundane life that goes about the work-a-day and keeps themselves and their loved ones safe by their diligent adherence to social norms. The seeker and facilitator, though, is interested in their own instrumentality and knows (or senses) four things: 1. How they experience themselves is in a deep relationship with the nature of the world. 2. Selfhood is a key asset to be tended to and invested in with intention. 3. Our instrument is a reservoir of knowing, a systematized relationship between context and content. 4. The last three suppositions, in concert, are useful for examining how we make meaning of other-selves. Essentially, when a space is cleared within me… I might lend the capacities of my own mind/body/spirit matrix for the good of another self or group of selves for organizing the complexity of sensing and articulating the self. We see the world how we see ourselves. Who we want to be is who we idolize. What we think we’re not, we hate. And we avoid what we believe we are good at hiding. Pain heightens when we bring more attention to it, and especially when we fear it. When we shift our efforts of fixing, managing or eliminating pain, and instead focus on fixing how we RELATE to our pain, profound healing begins. If you deal with chronic pain, I invite you to ask the question, “Is there a place in my body that feels easier to be with right now?” You may want to start focusing on an area as small as your fingers, toes, or something as discrete as your face. Begin to bring awareness to this part of your body, observing through interoception (internal tracking) what you might feel in that particular place. This includes sensation, feeling, or emotion. Example: is there ease, expansion, space, softening, settling, coolness, comfort, compassion, warmth, peace, stillness, etc? It might be easier to use pressure or touch to really feel into this space. As an example, you could tap and press your fingertips together, or gently push your toes into the ground. By taking intentional time to consciously AND somatically orient to feelings of safety and relaxation, you can begin to create new neural pathways for the brain, body and nervous system to lean into. This isn’t meant to invalidate the pain, but to support the body in creating capacity to be with MORE than just pain. Because ultimately, your body can simultaneously contain it all–what feels good, and not good. Make sure to save this practice, give it a try and let me know how it lands with you!

Conscious breathing is an excellent antidote to stress. Place one hand on your belly and one hand over your sternum and see how many breaths it takes for you to breathe from your belly/central diaphragm. Once you have your belly breath, try breathing in for four seconds from your nose, hold for four seconds, then exhale long and slow for 8 seconds. Repeat at least three times. Breathing is an awesome shortcut to dropping your blood pressure and moving out of physiological stress. Start conscious breathing NOW. April is stress awareness month! Trick question, which stressors do you have control over? We tend to believe we have control over things we actually do not, or we believe we have control over nothing. You do not actually have control over other people, although you may have some influence at times. I do not have control over my loved one’s health crisis. I do, however, have control of what i do and don’t do, and HOW I handle it (or don’t handle it), so do have control over that. FYI: Your CHOICES are your superpower. My challenge for you is to take an honest and thoughtful inventory of the stressors in your life and identify where and what you do have some control. Addressing those ares can significantly reduce your stress.
