23.10.30 “To truly appreciate beauty, one must be willing to let it go.” ~ Yukio Mishima 🌟 @reggiebphoto’s Portra & @fujixweekly’s Portra 400 V2 ISO640 - No matter how many times in my life I get to see Kinkakuji, the Temple of the Golden Pavillion, it will never fail to take my breath away. Originally constructed as a villa for a wealthy statesman in 1397, Kinkakuji was converted to Rinzai Zen temple in 1408. Like many of Japan’s remaining historical structures, however, Kinkakuji has been destroyed and rebuilt many times throughout history. I had the privilege of discussing this with an English-speaking monk while in Japan in 2018, where I commented that that must be heartbreaking to consider the history that was lost in the process. While he agreed to it being sad, he wisely commented that they build most things out of wood for a reason - a central belief of Buddhism is the impermanence of everything. He even told me there are certain shrines where they are intentionally destroyed to remind people of the importance of this circle of life. Nachdem Kyoto einige Kilometer von Kobe entfernt ist, ging es mit dem Reisebus erst einmal 2 Stunden zu unserem ersten Ziel, dem goldenen Pavillion. Der Tempel Rokuon-ji, der auch als Kinkaku-ji bekannt ist, gehört seit 1994 zum World Cultural Heritage.
