Have you been to... Himeji Castle Himeji Castle, completed in 1609, one of Japan's most iconic and meticulously preserved original castles, is a sight to behold. My first encounter with this architectural marvel was during a day trip from Kyoto in 2005. I returned in 2023, following the completion of its latest renovation/refresh in 2015. When you approach the castle from the train station, you realize how impressive it is with each step. Its formidable structure is a testament to Japan's rich history and craftsmanship. When I went inside, I was struck by how closely it must have resembled its original form compared to my previous visit. The meticulous restoration work highlighted the history of the past. However, visiting Himeji Castle comes with its own set of considerations. Firstly, since you must remove and carry shoes upon entry, storing bags or luggage in a coin locker is advisable before entering the castle. Furthermore, navigating the narrow and steep stairs to the higher floors can be challenging, especially with belongings in tow. Chasing those Insta spots? . Well, you won’t snap a pic in this super famous Mt Fuji Insta spot anymore. . ❗️But luckily I have an alternative for you. If you know…a photo of a supermarket is what you’re going for.😛 . If you were in Japan, if you’re planning on going to Japan, or if you’re simply on Instagram, perhaps you saw photos and videos from this spot. My video included. . It’s probably the most famous Lawson store, located in the Japanese resort town - Fujikawaguchiko. . Unfortunately, because of overcrowding and badly behaved tourists, the authorities are planning (or they already did) to install a huge wall blocking the view. . I have to say, that I don’t blame them. Firstly, I was surprised that this location is in the middle of town, next to the main road. In the photos it looked like it was in the middle of nowhere. Secondly, the crowds there were insane, basically all day long. And people were not respecting traffic rules, stepping on the road all the time. Even with a traffic “guard” screaming at them. Thirdly, constant crowds were disrupting the store employees and actual customers. . So I probably shouldn’t, but I can tell you that not far from Lawson, there is a 7/11 with a great view of Mt Fuji. I actually preferred this location, it was more quiet. . 📍The exact address is: 4735-1 Funatsu, Fujikawaguchiko. . So you know, you can snap a supermarket - Mt Fuji photo there. Last Saturday it was a summery 30’C in Kyoto so I took a day trip outside the city to Wazuka, where 45% of the tea sold in Uji is grown and produced. Seeing the spring green rows of tea in the plantation brought a cooling effect despite the blazing sunshine. Eating Cha-soba (tea soba) was a must for me (it was accompanied by a refreshing cup of shin-cha, this year’s first harvest green tea), followed by a flavourful hojicha (roasted green tea) ice cream. Walking through the town, I could smell the fragrance of tea being roasted.
