I've taken up reading again to find ways to detox from a lot of PHONE USING this 2024. Not an easy task mind you. Switching off. Tough training. But doing it. A lot of you have been messaging me about this so I will summarise what the latest evidence says Menopause affects all women and we are 51% of the population During the transition, women’s brains can undergo changes in grey matter and brain energy, with symptoms like brain fog and poor memory challenges which some women find very challenging After menopause, many women see the symptoms go away, which may be a sign of brain adaptation. Many also experience a cognitive rebound, while others, a stabilization. Yet, there are those who face ongoing declines, which is where Alzheimer’s prevention becomes critical. It’s important to clarify the link between menopause and Alzheimer’s. Menopause is considered a ‘risk factor’ for Alzheimer’s . This means the risk increases post-menopause. However, all women go through menopause, but “only” about 20% develop dementia. While 20% is way too many, this also signals that there are other factors at play in this area There is renewed interest in evaluating menopause hormone therapy, such HRT, for Alzheimer’s prevention . They suggest that oestrogen may be beneficial, but more research is needed before HRT can be considered for Alzheimer’s risk reduction in clinical practice. HRT is NOT approved for this purpose. Taking hormones is one of many possible strategies to reduce Alzheimer’s risk. We need a lot more research in this area Definite measures we all can take take include exercise a healthy diet, management of medical conditions such as diabetes, lowering high cholesterol, keeping your weight normal, reducing abdominal obesity and stopping smoking, taking regular exercise and stress management. 🌟 Cook book review 🌟 The Food Pharmacy by @jessredden1 Published by @gillbooks & is available now! "Easy, delicious, nutritious recipes to fuel good health" Firstly this is more than standard cook book as it's divided into different health sections (10) with 4/5 pages detailing the section and then has appropriate recipes to match. It took me a while to review this as I wanted to try out different recipes through out the book and I love a good cook book as I collect them! In total I did 5/6 of the more easier recipes as I found with some of them I didn't have all the ingredients for them and I'm not one to go out and buy an ingredient and use it only once but firm favourites would definitely be : 🌟Fakeaway KFC burger 🌟Apple pie overnight oats 🌟Mexican chicken salad 🌟One pot chicken and leek traybake I do have a few more I'd like to try out but this is definitely a healthier cook book and would be a lovely Christmas present 🎁 for the health conscious foodie in your life! 🪢When the Hangman Came to Galway 🪢 By Dean Ruxton My hooman got a lend of this book from a friend of the author, so I had to give it a woof. I had already read another one of his books, Death On Ireland's Eye, and this was just as an interesting look into Ireland's past. The author uses the archives and writings of James Berry, the titular hangman, to tell his story. A lot of the book describes how Berry honed his craft, with details of calculations to determine the correct length rope and severed ligatures which while interesting doesn't make for great bedtime reading, especially if you're squeamish. It's a fascinating glimpse into Victorian Britain and Ireland where the punishment for taking a life was the end of your own. The book focuses on two of Berry's assignments in Galway. The first is the convicted murderer of John Moylan, whose death sparked controversy in the countryside of Galway. The second is the conviction of Thomas Parry who shot his ex-fiancee in the dining room of the Royal Hotel in Galway City. Neither case is as straightforward as they may first seem, and as the author presents each case from the records available, the reader can make up their own mind on the guilt - or level of guilt - of the accused. While this is a very factual book and relies on secondary sources, the author expertly ties it all together in a narrative that keeps the readers interest. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for his next book, and on the Irish Times 'Lost Leads' series which this author also writes. I give it three and a half out of five tail wags 🐶

I’m very late to the Aisling bandwagon, but happy to join! In fairness, I was in 6th year when this was published 😂 Our main gal is Aisling - 28, commuting from Bally-go-something to her office job in Dublin, great craic, and wondering why her boyfriend of seven years hasn’t asked her to marry him. After a disastrous holiday, she ends things with John and moves to Dublin to live her best single life. I absolutely flew through it and read it in one sitting. Overall it’s a light read (though very emotional in parts), and was great to take a break from my current (and dark) book, It by Stephen King. I’ve always found Emer McLysaght funny in interviews, so it’s no surprise I was chuckling throughout this one. I’m hoping to read the other four books this month before the Aisling Red Line Festival event, and very glad to have such a comfort series for October. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5
