In ”Harum Scarum” (1965) Elvis stepped into the shoes of a movie star akin to Rudolph Valentino, unknowingly entangled in global intrigue. Excited and ready to dive in, Elvis embraced the role and headed to the set, eager to bring the character to life. Dressed in the striking sheik attire tailored for him, Elvis bore a striking resemblance to Valentino himself, embodying the essence of a classic matinée idol. However, the glamour was short-lived as the production unfolded. The film was the brainchild of ”the king of the quickies”, producer Sam Katzman. The sets were relics from a bygone era, with the temple set having gathered dust since Cecil B. DeMille’s ”King of Kings” in 1927. The storyline was as thin as a thread, casting Elvis as Johnny Tyronne, a singing-action star thrust into a whirlwind of events as he navigates a kidnapping, assassination plots, and romantic entanglements. Colonel Parker’s quirky suggestion of a camel narrator in order to underline the campiness of the movie, was ultimately scrapped. Somehow, Elvis managed to power through the grueling fifteen-day shoot, bearing the weight of the lackluster production. Upon wrapping up, Elvis gifted his colleagues Star of David watches and shared a heartfelt message with Gene Nelson, the director. Despite the tumultuous filming experience, Elvis remained hopeful for better projects in the future. Despite initial doubts, ”Harum Scarum” surprisingly turned a profit of $2 million, with Elvis claiming a 50 percent share. Directed by Gene Nelson, ”Kissin’ Cousins” from 1964 follows the story of a singing military officer named Josh Morgan (Elvis!), who is sent on a mission to convince a group of mountain families to allow the government to build a missile site on their land. To make things more complicated, Elvis also plays the role of his look-alike cousin Jodie Tatum, a hillbilly who catches the eye of the local mountain women. You may recognize Yvonne Craig, who stars as Azalea Tatum. She played Batgirl in the 1960s ”Batman” TV series, but in ”Kissin’ Cousins” she’s the love interest caught between the two sides of Elvis’s characters. The film was produced by Sam Katzman, known as the ”king of the quickies” for his ability to make films rapidly and inexpensively. Katzman started in the film industry as a prop boy at just 13 years old and worked his way up to become a successful producer, mastering various aspects of film production along the way. His career spanned multiple decades and genres, from producing action/adventure serials and westerns in the 1930s to sci-fi films and teenage musicals in the 1950s. In the 1960s, he shifted to producing hippie and biker films for American International Pictures (AIP). Known for his astute marketing strategies and efficient production methods, Katzman rarely faced financial losses due to his ability to capitalize on current trends and produce films quickly enough to seize the moment! 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👨🎙️👩‍❤️‍💋‍👨🎙️👩‍❤️‍💋‍👨 #elvisedit #elvispresleyedit #elvisart #elvis #elvispresley #elvisthekingofrocknroll #thekingofrockandroll #digitalartworks #kissincousins #elvismovie #elvismovies #60shollywood #genenelson #60smovies #classicmovie #classicmovies #classicmoviestar #classicmoviestars #elvisaaronpresley #elvisaronpresley #elvisforever #tcb #tcb⚡️ #lowbudgetfilm #lowbudgetfilmmaking #bmovie #bmovies #hollywoodmovies #oldhollywood #hollywoodstar

♡ 𝓙𝓪𝓷𝓮 & 𝓖𝓮𝓪𝓻𝔂 ♡ •Singer and actress, Jane Powell and her first husband, Geary Steffen, are photographed on their wedding day at a chapel in Los Angeles, 1949. 🩷 In 1947, Jane was then a relatively unknown actress when she decided to get ice skating lessons from a former pro skater turned insurance salesman named Geary Steffen. Shortly after their introduction, Powell, who was then only eighteen, began seeing the twenty-three year old Steffen and before long, they became a Hollywood power couple. In 1948, they became engaged and around one year later later on November 5, 1949, the couple married at an intimate service inside of a California chapel. Many famous stars were in attendance including Elizabeth Taylor and Van Johnson who were good friends of Powell’s. Following their wedding, the couple went on to move in to a home together and in 1951, they welcomed their first child, Geary Jr, before welcoming another baby, Suzanne, in 1952. Shortly after Suzanne’s birth, Powell was cast in the film, “Three Sailors and a Girl,” which costarred the dancer, Gene Nelson, and shortly after filming began, the two actors started an affair. The affair was intense and due to her newfound relationship, Powell decided to file for divorce from Steffen with Nelson doing the same with his wife. Once their divorces were finalized, the couple were in talks about marriage however, they quickly realized they were not meant for each other and in 1953, Nelson ended the relationship. Following her divorce, Jane went on to wed three more men before meeting her match in Dickie Moore, a former child star, who she wed in 1988. The couple remained together until Moore’s death in 2015 at the age of 89. Jane lived out the remainder of her life in Connecticut before passing away in 2021 at the age of 92, seventeen years after Steffen’s death in 2004.

Happy 88th birthday to Gil Peterson (born February 28, 1936), the singer and actor who worked across stage, TV, and film. • Perhaps his most notable role was as the lead in actor/director Gene Nelson’s 1967 comedy, “The Cool Ones”, about a young, millionaire rock promoter who decides to create a new boy/girl duo team for his teen TV dance show by teaming up an ambitious go-go dancer and a has-been pop star and presents them to the public as a new romantic pair. The box-office flop also starred Roddy McDowell and Debbie Watson (pictured here). • He played Patty Duke’s character, Neeley O’Hara’s leading man in “The Valley of the Dolls” (1967); Dr. Elton Morris in “The Brain Machine” (1972), with James Best; and as the Tower Controller in the TV-movie, “The President’s Plane is Missing” (1973), with Buddy Ebsen. • Born in Winona, Mississippi, to Mabel (née Strickland) and WWI Army veteran H.W ‘Pete’ Peterson, Gil’s older brother Donald, would later become a NASA astronaut. Gil was a sports ace in high school. At Mississippi State, he played American Football. During college vacations, Gil sang in night spots and supper clubs. • Upon his graduation (he majored in sports physical education) he served with the U.S. Air Force Reserve, before moving to Los Angeles. Once there, he worked as a physical education instructor whilst pursuing a career as a performer. • He started out as a singer with the DownBeats. In 1962, he recorded the single, “Baby, Baby All the Time” with “Nobody’s Fool on the b-side, released by the Karle Company. Next, he cut an album with Bobby Troup, though it flopped. • Aside from singing, Gil worked in summer stock as well as working as an advertiser’s model for TV commercials. His first acting gig was on an episode of “Combat!”. He also acted on episodes of “F.B.I”, “Ironsides”, and “Emergency!”. • Gil established JaXon Productions, a film corporation in Mississippi, in 1969, intending to change his career from acting and singing to producing. He retired from the business in 1989, and settled in Winchester, Oregon. Married three times, he has two sons, Walter Jr. and Robert by his second wife Janet Lucille Wood.

“In those Warner Brothers years, the pictures I enjoyed the most (not the scripts but the fun I had making them) were the nostalgic musicals -Tea for Two, Lullaby of Broadway, On Moonlight Bay, I'll See You in My Dreams, By the Light of the Silvery Moon, Calamity Jane. I liked the old songs, and the good old times that those films captured. I guess I'm really an old-fashioned girl at heart, even though I look so contemporary that I always seemed misplaced in those period costumes.” ~Doris Day What about you guys, do you enjoy old time musicals? 1-2. An absolutely gripping western noir set during a blizzard, masterfully directed by Andre DeToth (even if screenwriter Phillip Yordan disagrees). Robert Ryan has come to settle terms with his former sweetheart Tina Louise, whose no married to Alan Marshall - but before they can come to blows, ex army captain Burl Ives and his no good men ride into town and hold everyone hostage. The tension escalates quickly. A great film, and had to have been an influence on Tarantino’s snowscapes western THE HATEFUL EIGHT, although this is the better film. The Blu-ray was going OOP and I grabbed it during Kino’s sale. #thedayoftheoutlaw #robertryan #burlives #tinalouise #alanmarshall #venetiastevenson #genenelson #neiamiahpersoff #dabbsgreer #unitedartists #andredetoth #kinolorberstudioclassics

Production on ”Harum Scarum” started on March 15, 1965 and it was the first film in Elvis’ new three-picture deal with MGM. The movie was supposed to be a light-hearted desert adventure, directed by Gene Nelson and produced by Sam Katzman. Elvis was initially excited about the collaboration and the cool costumes designed by Nelson, inspired by Rudolph Valentino. But as soon as they started shooting, he realized something was off. The story was a joke, the sets were poorly made, and even Nelson apologized for the rushed and sloppy production. Colonel Tom Parker knew that something had gone seriously wrong with ”Harum Scarum”. He watched the first cut and immediately wrote a letter to MGM expressing his concerns. He suggested that maybe they should release the film quickly to recover their investment and learn from the mistakes for the next project. In a surprising move, the Colonel even proposed adding a talking camel as a narrator to make the ridiculousness of the movie seem intentional. He thought the kids might find it cute and enjoy the humor. It was a rare moment of the Colonel admitting that he may have made a mistake! Despite the challenges, Elvis and his team remained optimistic and kept moving forward. But ”Harum Scarum” will always be remembered as a not-so-great moment in Elvis’ movie career. “Warner’s: 100 Years, 100 Classics.”“Come on along and listen to, The lullaby of Broadway...” A big Technicolor song and dance fest, Day teamed with Gene Nelson in “Lullaby of Broadway” (1951) while it may not be as sophisticated as an MGM musical but in many ways as much fun. Gladys George is a former star down on her luck forced to masquerade for her daughter an entertainer surprising her with a visit from London. Full of (“Lady for a Day”) complications and a strong performance by George putting over standards like “Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone” and “In a Shanty in Old Shanty Town”, S.Z. Sakall, Billy de Wolfe and Anne Triola as a couple of out of work vaudevillians and Florence Bates are responsible for all fun and hijinks. But this show really flies when Day and Nelson are singing and dancing. It is filled with wonderful standards like the Oscar winning title song, “You’re Getting to Be a Habit with Me”, “Just One of Those Things”, “Somebody Loves Me” and “Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart.” A big hit for Warner’s earning $2.2M, its soundtrack also went all the way to No.1 on the Billboard Charts. “Warner Bros’ Bright Lights Musical That’s Gay as the Gay White Way!” #dorisday #rip #1922 #singer #actresslife #dancer #musical #goldrecord #musician #blonde #joy #bright #cines #cinephile #cinephilecommunity #classicmovies #musical #singing #1950s #vintagehollywood #classichollywood #oldhollywood #silverscreen #genenelson #filmes #1951 #technicolor #dancing #lullabyofbroadway

“Warner’s: 100 Years, 100 Classics.” A nostalgic musical set in the late 1890’s, “The Daughter of Rosie O’Grady” (1950) was another Technicolor winner for June Haver (loaned from Fox and replacing too busy Doris Day) and Gordon MacRae (in a role once announced years before for George Raft). Haver is one of three sisters Patricia who goes on stage against her father’s wishes, secretly married Katie (Marcia Mae Jones) and youngest Maureen (Debbie Reynolds in her major film debut) who are all under the overprotective eye of their Irish widower father Dennis O'Grady (James Barton). Rosie O’Grady their mother was once a vaudevillian, a life which Dennis blames for her death. It’s not long before Patricia meets theater owner Tony Pastor (Gordon MacRae) for romance and a career in vaudeville. S.Z. Sakall, Gene Nelson, Sean McLory and Jane Darrell are in support. A $2.2M hit, and hard to resist with all its music and showbusiness story. “She's the Words and Music in All America's Heart!” #debbiereynolds #junehaver #thedaughterofrosieogrady #hollywoodstars #moviequotes #musical #colorful #vaudeville #comedy #classic #collage #filmreview #gordonmacrae #oldhollywood #1950 #musical #policeman #theater #warnerbros #genenelson #dancer #cinephile #cines #1950s #filme #cinephilecommunity #classicmovies #кино #peliculas #100years

OKLAHOMA! (1955) **½ Directed by Fred Zinnemann. Starring Gordon MacRae; Gloria Grahame; Gene Nelson; Charlotte Greenwood; Eddie Albert; James Whitmore; Rod Steiger and Shirley Jones. Screenplay by Sonya Levien and William Ludwig; Based on Oklahoma! by Rodgers and Hammerstein and Green Grow The Lilacs by Lynn Riggs; Produced by Arthur Hornblow Jr.; Cinematography by Robert Surtees and Floyd Crosby; Edited by George Boemler and Gene Ruggiero; Music by Richard Rodgers; Distributed by Magna Productions and RKO Radio Pictures. Oklahoma was the only musical directed by Fred Zinnemann in his four decade career as a solo, feature film director. Location footage was shot in Nogales, Canoa Ranch in Green Valley, Elgin and Amado, Arizona and Claremore, Oklahoma. Sets were filmed at M-G-M Studios, Culver City, California. Oklahoma! was the first production photographed in Todd-AO (the widescreen 70 mm film format, named after producer Michael Todd and The American Optical Company); and was simultaneously shot in the CinemaScope 35 mm format to allow presentation in theatres without 70 mm equipment. The film famously features the songs "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'"; "The Surrey With the Fringe On Top" and "Oklahoma". Oklahoma! is regarded as the first of the huge ‘roadshow’ musical films (the practice of opening a film in a limited number of theatres in major cities before their wide release). Newest additions to the collection. The Blu-rays and Serial Killing 101 are from Turning Point, and the others are from Value Village. Clickbait is a Horror Pack exclusive, my third. I'm pretty sure that that release of Jeepers Creepers is OOP. I haven't seen it available in ages, and the only edition you can find now is the bare bones double feature set. I was also super pumped to find Anatomy. I've been wanting to add it to my collection for ages, but I never come across it. The back cover has a little water damage, but it's minimal, and everything else is okay. This movie really needs a new Blu-ray release. The only one available is a bare-bones double feature release from Mill Creek, which was released 10 years ago. #blurayhaul #dvdhaul #turningpointottawa #valuevillagefinds #horrorpackexclusive #screamfactory #jeeperscreepers #serialkilling101 #thomashaydenchurch #coreyfeldman #lisaloeb #justinurich #frankapotente #dorisday #dorisdaymovies #jimmydurante #martharaye #stephenboyd #deanjagger #lullabyofbroadway #genenelson #moviemusicals #towongfoo #towongfoothanksforeverythingjulienewmar #patrickswayze #johnleguizamo #wesleysnipes #julienewmar #dragqueens #dragqueenmovie

“My most difficult dance routines were in Lullaby of Broadway. There was one spectacular number that required me to dance up and down a steep flight of stairs while wearing a long dress. . . I had to do this number with Gene Nelson, in tails, who danced it as well as choreographed it. Of course, Gene was a marvelous dancer and that was a help, but when I walked on that set in my gold-lamé ball gown and looked up at that Mount Everest of stairs, I put on the brakes.” However difficult and impossible the dance seemed, Gene's wife Miriam (who was also a dancer) helped Doris through the routine. ~ Quote from Doris Day: Her Own Story • Gene Nelson and Doris Day for Lullaby of Broadway (1951) and Tea for Two (1950) • Short clip of the dance sequence #dorisday #genenelson #oldhollywood #oldhollywoodmovies #oldhollywoodmusicals #musical #classichollywoodactress #classicactress #classicmovies #classichollywood

Oklahoma! (1955) - 6.6/10 Excellent costume design and sets, some great voices, a few catchy songs, I rarely watch musicals but I couldn’t get the title song out of my head so decided to finally watch in full, super weird story with almost no plot, bad guy is a total creep. #oklahoma #fredzinnemann #rodgersandhammerstein #gordonmacrae #shirleyjones #genenelson #gloriagrahame #charlottegreenwood #rodsteiger #eddiealbert #jameswhitmore #barbaralawrence #jaycflippen #roybarcroft

Watched #Oklahoma (1955) : Enchanting, vibrant, full of vibes and mesmerizing. Surprised to see this secret zone of Fred Zinnemann and how wonderful it was. Fred Zinnemann, you secret wolf! And I thought you were only restricted to dark, intense, intellectual, and strained dramas. Let me slap myself. Ok, done. Now let me clap with the same hands. Done. How surprised and glad I am to know that Fred could make a film like this. A typical musical with no heavy moments. A complete package of never-boring vibes, enchanting musicals, whimsical characters, brilliant rhymes with meaningful lyrics, beautiful locations, and mesmerising celluloid experience. The musical is based on the 1931 play "Green Grow The Lilacs," so I must give credit to the original source material. The film starts with a beautiful musical number, "Everything's going my way," and the next scene drags you into cute flirting. You know those two are in love, but you just prefer to wait until they accept it publicly and wholeheartedly. That's the beauty of the film. It's so simple yet attractive and interesting. Every musical number is mesmerising, be it audio or video. A sweet romance with typical conflicts and the supporting characters adding more fun to it-I couldn't have asked for more from a romantic musical comedy set in Oklahoma. Gloria Grahame played such an adorable character here. A beautiful girl, a little immature, but so sweet and funny at times. That Persian good-bye and Oklahoma Hello kissing scenes were so cute. One of the rare moments when kissing didn't look vulgar. That Granny holding a gun and telling farmers and cowboys to sing and be friends was one of my favourite scenes. Coming from Fred Zinnemann was a shock, but a pleasant one, I must say. Why don't they make such films anymore? Am I the only one who thinks that this was Zinnemann's version of "An American in Paris"? Crime Wave (1954, Andre de Toth). A favourite of mine which deserves to be better known. In the audio commentary, James Ellroy and Eddie Muller argue that Stanley Kubrick must have been influenced by this movie for The Killing. Both star Sterling Hayden of course but also Ted de Corsia and the unforgettable Timothy Carey and there are some stylistic similarities. Director Andre de Toth rejected Jack Warner’s idea of a big budget thriller with Humphrey Bogart and Ava Gardner and instead created this great noir on a shoestring in just 15 days. It was definitely the right choice. Remarkable on location footage of Los Angeles and an excellent early performance by Charles Bronson too. And Sterling Hayden really did give up smoking and chew toothpicks which made him irritable apparently #vintage #noir #sterlinghayden #charlesbronson #genenelson #teddecorsia #timothycarey #phylliskirk #1950s #oldhollywoodmovies
