He won the A.L. MVP award that season and led the Royals to the World Series, falling to the Phillies in six games despite Brett slashing .375/.423/.667. Brett and the Royals would win the 1985 World Series, though, with Brett slashing .370/.452/.407 in the 7-game series against the Cardinals. 1989 Donruss Kirby Puckett On this date in 1989, Puckett ties an MLB record with four doubles in a 10-8 Twins victory over the Blue Jays at the Metrodome. “A guy gets four doubles,” said Twins manager Tom Kelly, “that’s pretty impressive.” The Minnesota center fielder got his record day started in the first with an RBI double to center off Toronto starter Dave Stieb to tie the game 1-1. He knocked Stieb out of the game in the fifth with a line drive double down the left field line to drive in a run and make the score 5-1. Facing reliever Tom Henke in the sixth, he drove in another run on another double down the left field line to increase the lead to 9-1. Puckett’s record-tying double came in the eighth, this time on a line drive inside the right field line. “He’s hard to pitch to because he can hit anything,” said Blue Jays reliever Tom Henke. “He’s just a good hitter.” The Twins would hold on to win by a score of 10-8. “The team won, that's what's important,” said Puckett. “I didn't know anything about a record. I just try to hit the ball hard. 1985 Donruss Julio Franco On this date in 1985, Franco goes 4-for-5 to raise his average on the season to a league-leading .556 (15-for-27) after eight games. “Usually I’m a slow starter,” said Franco, “but this is nice. I’m a little surprised, but also glad.” The 25-year-old Cleveland shortstop had two singles and two doubles in the 11-5 Indians win over the Orioles at Cleveland Stadium. “He’s one of the best young hitters I’ve ever seen,” said Tribe manager Pat Corrales. “The way he hits, there’s no way to pitch to him.” Franco finished the season batting .288 with 97 runs and 183 hits, good for 10th in the AL. He hit .306 the following year, his first of four straight seasons batting .300 or better, and after being moved to second base in 1988 he won four consecutive Silver Slugger awards. Franco was traded to the Rangers before the 1989 season and went on to win an AL batting title for Texas in 1991 with a .341 average. Franco’s MLB career lasted 23 seasons before he played his last major league game at age 49 in 2007. He set a number of longevity records including being the oldest regular position player in MLB history. 1987 Donruss Greg Maddux rookie card (Rated Rookie) On this date in 1966, Maddux is born in San Angelo, Texas. With a father in the Air Force, he moved frequently as a child before eventually settling in Las Vegas and attending Valley High School. He won a state championship there as a junior and also found a tutor in Vegas in former scout Ralph Medar. “Ralph was the first pitching coach I ever had,” Maddux said. “He worked with me when I was 15 years old, and he taught me that movement was more important than velocity. He helped me make the ball move and sink as opposed to seeing how hard I could throw it. I think I was fortunate to learn that lesson at such a young age.” Maddux was selected by the Cubs in the second round of the 1984 MLB draft and made his MLB debut in 1986, posting a 5.52 ERA over six starts. In 1987, he went just 6-14 with a 5.61 ERA before playing in winter ball in Venezuela with Dick Pole as his pitching coach. Pole, who had worked with Greg in the minors and would again with the Cubs, was credited with teaching Maddux the value of the groundout. “Dick always told me. ‘You don’t have to strike him out, you just got to get him out,’” Maddux said. Maddux broke out in 1988, going 18-8 with a 3.18 ERA while making his first All-Star team. It would be the first of a record 17 straight seasons with 15 or more wins. Maddux won 19 games with a 2.95 ERA in 1989 and the next season won his first of a record 18 Gold Gloves. He won his first Cy Young in 1992 after posting a 2.18 ERA with a league-best 20 wins and 268 innings pitched. He then signed with the Braves where he capped his run of four straight Cy Youngs with a 19-2 record and a 1.63 ERA in 1995. Maddux spent the next 11 seasons with Atlanta and established himself as arguably the best pitcher of his era, known for his incredible command and movement. “Did you see Van Gogh paint?” wrote Tom Verducci in Sports Illustrated. “No, you could respond, but I saw Greg Maddux pitch." Over his 23 year MLB career Maddux went 355-227 with a 3.16 ERA and 3,371 strikeouts. His number 31 was retired by both the Braves and Cubs in 2009 and he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014.
