1989 Donruss Kirby Puckett On this date in 1989, Puckett ties an MLB record with four doubles in a 10-8 Twins victory over the Blue Jays at the Metrodome. “A guy gets four doubles,” said Twins manager Tom Kelly, “that’s pretty impressive.” The Minnesota center fielder got his record day started in the first with an RBI double to center off Toronto starter Dave Stieb to tie the game 1-1. He knocked Stieb out of the game in the fifth with a line drive double down the left field line to drive in a run and make the score 5-1. Facing reliever Tom Henke in the sixth, he drove in another run on another double down the left field line to increase the lead to 9-1. Puckett’s record-tying double came in the eighth, this time on a line drive inside the right field line. “He’s hard to pitch to because he can hit anything,” said Blue Jays reliever Tom Henke. “He’s just a good hitter.” The Twins would hold on to win by a score of 10-8. “The team won, that's what's important,” said Puckett. “I didn't know anything about a record. I just try to hit the ball hard. Okay, this is my last modern card post for a bit. This 1989 Donruss The Rookies is one of my absolute favorites of The Kid. I bought this set in 1989 specifically for this card, immediately put it in a protective sleeve, and didn’t remove it for 35 years! I just got it back from SGC and couldn’t be more pleased with the grade. 1989 Donruss Ken Griffey Jr. Rated Rookie This marks our first non-vintage post on Instagram. The original plan was to focus on cards from the ‘50s and early ‘60s, but I recently started to reminisce on and reevaluate the cards I collected as a kid in the mid to late ‘80s. When I picked up collecting again and introduced my son to it last fall, I quickly learned about the more recent phenomenon of professional grading. Wanting only the best for our collection, I was quite discouraged by the rarity and costs of PSA 10s, SGC 10s, and the like. Since then, my perspective has changed dramatically. I realize now you can find 8s and 9s that no human eye on Earth should be able to discern from 10s for only a fraction of the price. This makes me think 10s are a total sham that lives and breathes in a vacuum of “professional” collectors who are interested in profit. As such, I’m now grading my personal favorites from my ‘80s collection, and I’m even purchasing a few new ones to fill in some gaps. Like almost every other young, baseball-loving kid in 1989, my favorite player was Ken Griffey Jr.. How could it not be? After his rookie year, I collected only casually for another year or two. This 1989 Donruss Rated Rookie is one of my absolute favorites of his cards. The vibrant blue jersey and batting helmet harmonize exquisitely with the blue-purple top and bottom borders. We were opening a bunch over here to put the Warren Spahn puzzle together (twice!), and as per usual, there were a half dozen Tom Gordon Rated Rookies for every Ken Griffey Jr.! I pulled these packs out because they have some stars and Hall of Famers on the front. I know there isn’t a huge premium for stars, but I remember how cool it was as a kid to see a favorite player through the plastic! Darrell Evans spent 21 seasons in the majors, breaking into the big leagues with Atlanta in 1969, and spending time with San Francisco and Detroit before returning home again for his age-42 season in 1989. One of the more interesting career arcs in MLB history, Evans slugged 40 home runs thrice, once when he was 26, again when he was 29, and one final time at age 38, leading the league with 40 for the reigning champion Tigers in 1985. Evans' odometer had plenty of miles by the end of his career, his sun-tanned face having grown ruddy. Having a certain look about him did provide some benefits, particularly in finding new life after baseball. Among the countless fans Evans played in front of during his career was Hollywood casting agent Phil Harbarie, who was struck by Evans' poise and stature. Approaching him through his agent, Harbarie offered him a small part during his final season in 1989, which he was able to work into his schedule. The movie, Powwow Highway, led to Evans hitting the ground running in retirement, landing roles in 1990's Dancing With Wolves, 1992's The Last of The Mohicans, 1995's Heat, and 1999's Mystery Men. If you find yourself wondering, "Gee, I sure don't remember seeing Darrell Evans' name in the credits," you would be right. Before taking his first role, Harbarie convinced Evans a stage name would prevent him from being typecast as a boring former athlete. SABO Saturday…I Might Have a Problem Edition. This is the first appearance of Chris Sabo in a base Donruss set. He was in the 1988 The Rookies set, and 1988 Donruss Best Baseball the year prior. Back in the day, Beckett considered this his rookie card. It’s weird that they didn’t list a lot of these end of the year sets in their magazine in the 80s. “Okay, weirdo, why do you have a picture of 40 1989 Donruss Sabos?” I hear you. Let me explain. Years ago, there was an auction on eBay that had a ton of “Sabo rookies” for $4.99, and I bought it because I it contained 88 Fleer Update and Score Traded, both of which I needed, and a handful of 88 Topps Traded (that are just ugly fun), and a bunch of 89 Topps gold cups (even more fun)…89 Fleers, and 89 Donrusseses…and this is about half of those. 1989 Donruss Brady Anderson rookie card On this date in 1964, Anderson is born in Silver Spring, Maryland. He played 15 MLB seasons, primarily as a center fielder with the Orioles, and was a three-time All-Star. Known for his hustle, slick fielding, speed, and power out of the leadoff spot (as well as his 90210-esque sideburns), Anderson is the only player in MLB history with at least 50 homers and 20 steals in one season and 20 homers and 50 steals in another. “When we look back in Oriole history,” said teammate Cal Ripken Jr., “we will probably remember him as the greatest leadoff hitter we ever had.” Anderson was inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame in 2004. After moving to California during infancy, Anderson attended Carlsbad High School just north of San Diego. Despite hitting .511 as a senior, the 145-pound Anderson was not drafted and instead accepted a scholarship to play at UC Irvine. “He was such a scrawny kid, but he was a gem,” recalled Anteaters coach Mike Geragos. After hitting .359 as a junior, Anderson was drafted by the Red Sox in the 10th round of the 1985 MLB draft. Anderson excelled in the minors where his Single-A manager called him “consistently spectacular,” but was up and down from the bigs after making his MLB debut with the Red Sox in 1988. Anderson instilled a strict fitness and nutrition regimen after being traded to the Orioles and had a breakout season in 1992. He made his first All-Star team and ended the year hitting .271 with 21 homers, 80 RBIs, 100 runs, 98 walks, and 53 stolen bases, becoming the first player in AL history with a 20-homer, 50-steal, 80-RBI season. In 1994, Anderson stole 31 bases in 32 tries for a 96.9% success rate - an MLB record for a player with at least 25 steals. He set an AL record in 1995 with his 34th consecutive stolen base without being caught. In an unexpected power surge in 1996, Anderson became just the 15th player to hit 50 home runs in a season to go with a .297 average, 110 RBIs, 117 runs, and an AL-leading 92 extra-base hits. His next highest homer total would come in 1999 when he hit 24 round-trippers. Anderson retired in 2002 with 210 career homers, 315 stolen bases, and 1,062 runs.

Take any professional athlete and odds are good that they will be competent at a few other sporting or physical feats. Not everyone is Deion Sanders or Bo Jackson, but most athletes won't be falling flat on their faces once removed from their element, either. Ask a quarterback to throw a baseball, and you'll probably see it fly, and so on. Occasionally, physical skill and prowess is an indicator of future success, not merely a parlor trick of human versatility. This is the path of Hal Morris, the career .300-hitting, long-time Red, who, before he broke into the majors, had multiple competitive yo-yo titles under his belt. From 1978 through 1981, the adolescent Morris ran riot through yo-yo circles, besting yoers double and triple his age, mastering some of the sport's most demanding tricks while also inventing plenty of his own. His reign culminated at the 1981 Yo-Yo Cup in Salt Lake City when a 16-year-old Morris unveiled his signature trick, "Hal On Earth." Never attempted before nor again, Morris' trick was immediately banned due to the extreme danger posed to both the performer as well as the audience. At the time, however, the move was still fully within the rules, virtually guaranteeing his victory. The trick required Morris to wield dual yo-yo's, one dipped in jellied denatured alcohol and lit aflame. The flaming yo-yo was induced into a vertical stall, while Morris performed a textbook Around-The-World around it with his other hand. Every time I look at this card, I’m immediately transported back to my childhood: whiffle ball games in the morning, riding our bikes to the nearby market to buy a Squeezit or an Otter Pop, maybe a water gun fight in the afternoon, and endless sessions of trying to advance past Soda Popinski on “Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out”. But not only does it have the no-dot-after-Leaf-Inc “error,” but he’s also got…get this…not ONE asterisk on Denotes, but TWO asterisks. That’s right. That’s a thing. And…ya boy has one. Not to mention the five “no dots.” I said I wasn’t trying to make you jealous. But at this point it really feels like I’m rubbing it in, I’m sure.
