Printed ARCs (Advanced Reader Copies) of NEARLY DEPARTED arrived. I’ve stood (sat) on this same balcony on previous Passover holidays with a dream, a laptop, a deadline, a lot of stress and now I’m here holding the first real, physical manifestation of my memoir. It’s still sinking in. ARCs are uncorrected, not for sale proofs of a book and generally used for marketing and publicity (sending to media outlets for early coverage etc) but look very much like what the final product will look like. They even have a back jacket layout which includes my author photo, bio and book description- I’ve seen the cover art a million times but never the back so that was pretty thrilling. I read through some of my book (weeeeiiird) over the first days of Passover and tried to see it through the lens of a reader who didn’t know me personally and who hadn’t seen these words a million times before like I have. Maybe I’m biased, but I liked what I read. I’m proud of the story and how I’ve told it. That’s a hard thing for me to say (write) out loud. The main benefit of these ARCs, for me, is that now I can stop carrying around my fake book which I fashioned out of a cover printout wrapped around a notebook (see video. also it’s the one on the left in photo 3. not bad right ?) To those of you wondering if I’ll do a FEEL IT post with the final copies once I have them in July, OF COURSE I will. Maybe several. But for now, I’m going to hold my book in my hands and stare at it in awe and travel back in time to show it to 15 years ago me who sat across from an oncologist who delivered the news that my best efforts to avoid cancer weren’t enough and I’d still need preventative chemo. I’ll tell past me that the silent promise I made to myself- that I’d write this unbelievable story one day- has been honored. She won’t believe it, but this ARC will be my proof. ☘️March Wrap Up! ☘️ I got 20 books read in March, which is a personal best for me! I’ve been making sure I prioritize reading over TV and scrolling whenever possible. But I’m not perfect! I have lots of days where scrolling is the only thing I can do for a couple hours because it’s brainless and I need a break! Favorite book: Assassins Anonymous by Rob Hart. It was exhilarating from beginning to end and had lots of interesting characters. I forget sometimes I enjoy high-stakes action adventure stories.

We felt one of the most endearing characters in the book was Levi Bassano, a New York scriptwriter and a WWII soldier whose story led to his recounting of not just the prejudice and fears that Italians of Jewish heritage faced, but also the post-war investigations being held in America, and the child he was able to help survive during one of the battles in Italy. We were also shocked at the Cardinal Marchetti's ultimate secret and how it was handled by the Vatican. Many subplots made us stop reading to ponder. We found the characters' development and their interactions to be captivating. The author blended real Hollywood and Italian movie stars, producers, directors, and writers of the 1950s with fictional ones and gave them intricate personalities and histories. We were inspired to read Ms. Jenner's first novels, as we are all fans of Jane Austen and have not read THE JANE AUSTEN SOCIETY." ✨New Book Highlight!✨ Out today is one of my favorite books of 2024 (so far), Piglet by Lottie Hazell. Isn’t the cover fantastic?! 🥰 Here’s my short review: Without disclosing what betrayal occurred, Lottie Hazell manages to brilliantly articulate the societal pressures placed on women. To be the perfect cook, the perfect wife, the perfect friend, the perfect daughter: to be and do it all. The title and titular character so perfectly captures that “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” world that women live in. Hazell’s debut was stunning and relatable. A timeless story told in a unique and new way.

✨BOOK HIGHLIGHT!✨ Emily Austin has quickly become one of my favorite writers. Her characters are so quirky and unique, and her books really shine a light on mental illness and neurodivergence. Interesting Facts About Space is already one of my favorite books of 2024. It is a compulsively readable novel about a woman named Enid who is terrified of bald men for a reason she can’t remember, obsessed with facts about space, and convinced she is a terrible person. When Enid starts dating someone seriously, her paranoia spikes. While navigating new relationships with her half-sisters and trauma from an absentee father, Enid must figure out how to confront the demons she’s kept hidden for years before she breaks. Funny, heartwarming, and charming as all of Emily’s books are, Interesting Facts about Space is really a book about the beautifully quirks that make us human.

Today, 7th October 1403, saw the Battle of Modon. The two maritime superpowers of the Mediterranean, the Republic of Venice in north east Italy, and Republic of Genoa in north west Italy, had fought in numerous wars against each other since 1256 as they rivalled each other for dominance in Mediterranean trade and transport. After yet another short period of uneasy peace between the two, tensions rose as reports of Venetian merchant ships being raided by Geonese pirates began to increase. Venetian Captain-General of the Sea, Carlo Zeno, was tasked to deal with the situation, and mobilised a fleet of 11 galleys and two round ships. Meanwhile a Geonese fleet of galleys, round ships, galleasses and transport ships, under the command of the French Marshal Bouciaut, (Genoa had been under French control since 1396),set sail for Cyprus, and then on to the Holy Land to raid Muslim ports for plunder. One such raid was on Beirut, where most of the goods raided and stolen were actually from local Venetian merchants. This was the last straw for Venice, and as the Geonese passed Modon in southwest Greece, the Venetian fleet struck. As the Geonese attempted to make a run for it, the Venetians pursued with all haste, closing on several ships and engaging in hand to hand combat. The battle was decided when the Venetian round ship, Pisana, captured three Geonese galleys, forcing the rest to scatter and flee. Venetian losses were 156 wounded, Geonese losses were 600 dead & wounded, 300 captured and 3 galleys captured.
