8 years ago I taught around the corner from where these pictures were taken. Many of you know my story of being fired for political reasons as an Orange school teacher in 2015. Whenever I return home to Jersey it’s a whirlwind of emotions. As I drive past different places I’m flooded with memories. The clean pain of boundaried relationships and recognizing I am not who I used to be. This time hit on a whole not-her level. It was full circle. I was returning home after getting the call to be the network organizer for @freemindsfreepeople 2024!! Not only is @freemindsfreepeople the space where I first met some of my favorite educator homies of all time like @dr.farima_ @chaski_kuychi @nhitruong and reconnected with @uhkiea but it’s also been a place of refuge for me as an educator who has been systemically pushed out and punished for teaching the truth, like so many radical Black and Brown teachers. And so for @freemindsfreepeople 2024 to be in Newark, NJ Yes I said it!! FMFP 2024 NEWARK! My birthplace and where my organizing started. It’s truly nothing short of divine. I can’t make this up.
