Miles Davis and his second wife Frances Taylor regularly lived at the Chateau in the early sixties whenever he recorded in LA. Of his wives, he credited Francis with being the most influential on his art during some of his most groundbreaking work. She was a successful performer herself, and was the first African-American ballerina to perform with the Paris Opera Ballet. She was also featured on several of Davis’ album covers, including “Someday My Prince Will Come.” Despite a shared passion for style and performance, their marriage was tumultuous. Frances said, “I fell in love with his sound. It got to me . . . How can someone come up with such beautiful music when he can have that other side? . . . I love the line that tells us to do all things without complaining and arguing! If you have children, you know how difficult it is to get them to do their chores, their homework, empty the garbage, etc. without complaining or arguing. Image how God feels about us, his children, who argue and complain a lot about doing the right thing. Yet, Paul is telling the Philippians that this is what God asks of us. Paul is also telling them that he hopes his work among them was not in vain. This also is a familiar sentiment of parents who worry about their children. God knows what will make us happy, even when we think we know better than God does. He knows that living a moral life will save us a lot of pain and guilt. He knows that prayer will keep us close to him. He also knows that obeying the law will keep us safe. Liars can't be trusted and can't trust others; violence begets violence; envy and lead to dissatisfaction and could lead to theft; but love begets love. When we help someone else, we have a sense of satisfaction that doing something for ourselves doesn't bring. Even if we begin whatever task it is with fear or insecurity, once we have completed the task, we feel enriched. Whether it is serving food at a food kitchen or reading to school children, or just cooking a meal for a neighbor who is ill, we feel better afterwards. The same goes for telling someone you'll pray for them, even if they are not a believer, or attending a church function, even if it's not your church. Whatever God is asking us to do, let's do it without complaining or arguing. PS. In other words, don't break even the least of the commandments. There used to be an expression that someone was on a "slippery slope" that could lead to disaster when he or she started to be less than honest. It is very difficult today to teach the young how to live a moral life because the media is doing such a good job of telling them that there is no such thing as sin. We allow violence into our homes in words and action in our language, in music in video games, on the television, etc. We hold up as role models people whose lives break every commandment. How can we develop a strong "moral compass" in light of these challenges? Jesus warns us about the consequences of teaching others to break the commandments by the way we live our lives. So how can we be models of loving witness? One way is to develop our relationship with God through his Word and prayer. When we gather together to listen to God's word, pray with one another, we are strengthening this relationship. When we have decisions to make, we can call on the gifts of the Holy Spirit we received in Baptism to help guide us. Just as we can't live without physical food to nourish us, we can't live a good spiritual life without the food we receive at the table of the Lord's Word. The stronger our relationship to God, the easier it will be to live as God intended us to live – as his beloved children following in His footstep. Prayer Lord, it is so hard to do the right thing and live the right way while we are surrounded by those who would tell us that we are old-fashioned and out of touch with the world. I was looking at my shelves to see what I wanted to spin today and stumbled across a record I could have sworn I sold about 2 years ago. During 2020, I had decided that record collecting wasn’t for me and started selling chunks of my collection on eBay, but some notable peeps in the VC reminded me why I collect, the joy of music. Therefore, I kept the remaining records I had not listed and continued my collecting journey. So back to the album, here I have a 1961 Columbia six eye promo copy of Someday My Prince Will Come by the Miles Davis Sextet. Such an incredible lineup, I love whenever Miles plays mute trumpet. I thought the ones who also stood out in this album (other than the magnificent tenors Trane & Mobley) were Wynton Kelly & Paul Chambers. Also, who can forget about Jimmy Cobb?!?!? This is one that I honestly have to spin more now that I know I kept this in my collection 😅. P.s. Just wanna share this Devotion "Praying daily for God's guidance" from #FrancesTaylor, be bless while reading everyone ☺️🙏. The Book of Proverbs makes for an interesting read. There is great advice in these words and quite a bit to think about. The first verse we have here is pretty familiar. "The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom." It is good to remember that God is God and we are not! So often we think that we are in control of our lives, the masters of our fate! We forget that God is in charge. When we think of ourselves as in charge, that's when things go wrong. We put ourselves first, we make poor decisions and suffer the consequences. When we put God first and follow his way, we are at peace. That doesn't mean that we don't run into problems, but God is there to direct us. We only need to ask for direction. It's amazing that a peaceful heart usually means a decrease in stress and anxiety. This leads to a healthier you and goes along with the statements that our days will be multiplied. And even if we don't live as long as we might like, it will be a happier, more joyous life. The problem is, we tend to like control. I do understand. I am a very bad passenger, I prefer to drive. I have been in too many situations where I felt unsafe. It takes time for me to trust. But I have found that when I gave up trying to control my life, things went a lot smoother. I pray daily for God's guidance. I can't control what my children or grandchildren do, no matter how much I might like to, but I can pray that God will help to guide them. It is my responsibility to give them good example and to help them realize that following Jesus will bring them joy and not sorrow. Handing everything over to God isn't always easy, but, as the proverb says, it is the beginning of wisdom, and it also is the beginning of freedom. ⠀ Miles Davis - Someday My Prince Will Come (1961)⠀ ⠀ ~~~~~~⠀ ⠀ I've been neglecting my jazz recently so on a cool Friday evening, it is the perfect weather for this underrated Miles Davis album. I finally heard this album a couple of years ago and fell in love with it. Part of it was for Davis' insistence of having his wife, Frances, be the cover star. It was not only in line with the overall theme of the record, an expression of love for his wife through the music of the title track, but also of Davis demanding for black women to be the protagonists on his album covers. It was a bold move in 1961 and it began here. Musically, you could argue that it breaks no new grounds against the more far out free jazz movement developing at the time and some way from his fusion experiments to come. However, I'm a simple guy when it comes to music and jazz and I love this album for playing it cool and straight so beautifully. Of course it helps when you've got Miles, Coltrane, Hank Mobley, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb playing. Fannie (Frances) Taylor ~ On January 1, 1923, in Sumner, Florida, 22-year-old Fannie Taylor was heard screaming by a neighbor. The neighbor found Taylor covered in bruises and claiming a Black man had entered the house and assaulted her.
