~ 2-3/ 100. About a week left to finish the chapter I'm working on and the last few days rushed past. To slow it all down tonight I returned to something I'd written last year, about what teaching 'body work' means to me, as a woman and as a feminist: a work of care; of caring for *all* bodies, for the experiences each has had and for the marks these might have left. Class after class, I'm trying to make space for more peaceful relationships with having and being a body. One where we can experience the joy that lies in knowing one's body, its power, beauty, its ability to transform and heal - in contrast to the crushing injunctions that plague us. A space for laughter, too. My deepest thanks to my colleagues and clients who teach and inspire me daily, on and off the page - and to the friends who've read this months ago, @marys_hertiman @marinemandarine @well.nesswithkim 🌱 (The screen captures give an idea of the kind of layout I'd give it tonight, but I'm sure it could change again.) ~ Hug yourselves I tell them But like, really hug yourselves I say        as they each rest their backs  on the padded barrels of the studio  where I teach Hug yourselves        as their arms open wide to embrace all this space that right now belongs only to them Hug yourselves        as I imagine their spines growing just this bit  longer  again with every breath Hug yourselves I almost whisper        as their hands return to grab their shoulders and pull down gently to widen        loosen the upper back        lengthen the neck  and make room in there  for the women they are to stand proud and tall  despite the weight of all this Life Hug yourselves But like        really hug yourselves I tell them 'Cos life under patriarchy is bloody hard I say In my mind – and sometimes not        but only to the ones I know can hear Let yourselves spread and be as vast and impetuous as the sea is a couple of streets down Hug yourselves Really hug yourselves  (Here and everywhere) And know that when you do  I do it to you too ~~~ #100daysofwriting #100joursdecriture #ecrireauquotidien #pilates #spinecorrector #feministpilates #feministteacher #feministpilatesteacher

The vibrance & vision of Black women’s organizing and leadership ✨ Last month, I had the pleasure of witnessing some trailblazers get their flowers at the State of Black Women Symposium and 40th Anniversary Gala of the Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI) at Spelman where it all began in 1983! This historic celebration of Black women’s contributions to advance health equity and well-being for Black girls and women was everything. I remain inspired by the Builders of the Movement who have been instrumental in shaping advancements around reproductive justice, maternal health, chronic disease management, cancer research and screening, and provider and policy change. What a legacy to live, what a legacy to inherit! 💛💛💛 #JusticeandJoy #Blackwomenshealth #BWHI #blackhealthmatters #reproductivejustice #reproductivehealth #blackfeminist #feministteacher #blackfeministtheory #blackfeminism #blackfeminisms #blackgirlshealth #LifeAsProfessorJolly #spelmancollege #spelman #reproductiverights

This Teacher’s Appreciation Week, I’m savoring community, possibility, & partnership. Shot out to Daniya & Fiona for taking me out to dinner, and to Fhrynee & Tiia for manifesting our 2024 travel course to the Caribbean on tourism & reproductive justice after an inspiring office hours session last Spring! I’m encouraged by amazing students with whom I can build a more just, humane, and joyful present & future. I’m appreciating the educators who poured into me, especially when there were limited resources and endless labor. I remember you with gratitude from Brooklyn to Williamstown to Kingston to Ann Arbor to Amherst. Initially, I hopped on the bandwagon to create my own Barbie post, but during the process, I realised that this trend represents something much bigger. So, let me take this opportunity to remind you that being into STEM doesn't mean you have to give up your love for all things pink and sparkly. For the longest time, I thought that being a feminist meant having to adopt more masculine traits to be taken seriously. However, I've learned that feminism is about embracing and celebrating all aspects of femininity. If you're a teacher, please remind your female students that they don't have to sacrifice their femininity to succeed in STEM. And if you're a female teacher in an all-boys school like me, let's show our students that pink is powerful, intelligent, and deserves respect! #barbie #barbiemovie #feminism #pinkispowerful #girlpower #STEMcommunity #womeninSTEM #STEMeducation #feministteacher

Nine photos is not nearly enough to represent the love and gratitude I have this International Women’s Day. Today I celebrate student leaders, teachers, support staff, artists, advocates. athletes, and authors. On International Women’s Day (2023), The United Nations writes, “Facing a multiplicity of global crises, we have a chance to create a better future—not just for women and girls, but for all humanity and all life on Earth. Join us.” Today I’m proud to join with those in this photo (and those in my heart) in finding a way forward. May we find joy in our classrooms, healing in our communities, and hope in the world our students and their peers will lead. . . . . . #internationalwomensday #studentleaders #feministteacher #SDG5 #embraceequity #embraceequity2023 #teachersofinstagram

Feminist Formations is delighted to highlight artist and Oregon State University faculty Lorenzo Triburgo (they/them). Lorenzo's piece "For Tre" is the cover art of our Winter 2022 issue. Through performance, photography, video and audio Lorenzo Triburgo, often with their partner and collaborator Sarah Van Dyck, elevates trans*queer subjectivity and abolitionist politics. They were awarded a 2019 Workspace Residency at Baxter St/CCNY and a Bronx Museum of the Arts fellowship in 2020. Permanent collections include the Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago, IL), Portland Art Museum (Portland, OR) and select exhibition venues include Bruce Silverstein, NYC; Photoforum Pasquart, Biel, Switzerland; Kunst und Kulturhaus, Berne, Switzerland; Dutch Trading Post, Nagasaki, Japan; the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, IL; Henry Art Gallery, Seattle, WA; Magazzini del Sale, Siena, Italy; and Oude Kerk, Amsterdam, the Netherlands as a winner of the international Pride Photo Award. "For Tre" is part of the series Policing Gender, which "includes photographs of studio backdrops setup without people, aerial photographs taken from a hot air balloon and recordings of verbal interviews with LGBTQ incarcerated people overlaid with ambient sounds from within the prison's noise. These images and audio recordings challenge viewers to consider their privilege of looking and objectifying individuals on society’s margins...The draped fabrics recall sets in Renaissance portraiture that – in the past – might invite viewers to look at those painted with a sense of ownership, or – as Susan Sontag once wrote – 'participate in another person’s mortality, vulnerability, mutability.' By removing the person, these un-portraits not only remove the photographer’s power to 'capture' and the viewer’s power to look – they encourage us to think more deeply about systems of incarceration and the public invisibility of incarcerated LGBTQ incarcerated people, while bringing larger public visibility." ...caption continued in comments.

"As we say hello to 2023, we have a farewell to share. We would like to announce the news of Carina Buzo Tipton's departure from Feminist Formations - this news is exciting and filled with immense joy and pride, alongside some (admittedly selfish) bittersweetness. Carina is leaving Feminist Formations to serve as Assistant Director of DEI Education in the Office of Institutional Diversity at Oregon State University. Carina first joined our team in 2019 as Editorial Assistant and then transitioned into the role of Managing Editor and has for the last year worked alongside Miranda Findlay as Co-Managing Editor. Carina will be deeply missed, though we are so grateful she will remain within the OSU community. She is as sharp in her humor as she is in her intelligence. She is someone who truly embodies that which Feminist Formations strives toward - she is an exceptional teacher and guide, who seeks a more just world. She is truly kind and generous in her activism and leadership, and demonstrates how we can all move more effortlessly through true feminist formations." #buzotipton #FeministKilljoy #ChicanaScholars #PoCPhD #FeministFormations #FemForm #FemFormLove #FeministKilljoy #QWOC #WOC #QPOC #phdlife #womensstudies #feministscholarship #feministjournalism #womanist #nwsa #nationalwomensstudiesassociation #jhup #johnshopkinsuniversitypress #feminist #feministclassics #feministteacher

[a very belated VaChina’s mini talk review] 🍄 🍄 🍄 In early August, our feminist friend Xianan shared her academic job-seeking journey with us: from February to July 2022, from the research and teaching posts in the UK to western Europe, northern Europe and China. Xianan’s encouraging talk showed us how she balanced her PhD writing up with intense teaching, social engagement and stressful job seeking. She also offered us helpful tips on writing, time management, interview preparation and peer support. Congrats to Xianan for her new post as a lecturer in politics at the University of Exeter!!! We are no longer spinster school marms in a little one room school house, but for some reason educators are frequently still viewed as such. And the ludicrous idea that the American workforce could survive without women in it or that women are merely choosing to work frivolously is another falsehood suppressing the value of traditionally female held jobs. In many places across the USA teachers are paid so poorly, they must take on second and third jobs to keep a roof over their heads, all while being constantly disrespected and vilified by politicians and “news” networks. Due to anti-union laws around the country along with increasing privatization, there are teachers working without health benefits, without pay raises, without any caps on class sizes, without retirement plans, without protection. Further, the younger the children being taught, the lower teachers are paid. Preschool is not guaranteed, nor is any early childhood care, and the people who work with those populations are typically paid the absolute lowest with little to no union representation even in places with collective bargaining as they typically fall outside of public programs. This goes also for teachers dedicating their work to students of all ages with disabilities who themselves are devalued by society and often segregated into non-profit (aka non-union) programs where their teachers make a fraction of their public school counterparts, while essential paraprofessionals often make far less. And even in places with strong unions, women fall back on the pay scales due to pregnancy or childcare. In my own experience with two pregnancies and a child with complex medical needs in the NYC public school system, my maternity leaves resulted in my hire date being artificially moved, my step progression being halted, and my retirement date shifted. A male coworker with literally hundreds more days amassed in his sick bank (as men are less likely to go into negative days due to parental leaves and childcare) offered to gift me some days so I wouldn’t go without pay when I was forced on an early bedrest, but we were told this wasn’t permitted because my need wasn’t “catastrophic.” Imagine that.

Teaching to Transgress bell hooks & the Hierophant “The learning process comes easiest to those of us who teach, who also believe that there is an aspect of our vocation that is sacred: who believe that our work is not merely to share information but to share in the intellectual and spiritual growth of our students. To teach in a manner that respects and cares for the souls of our students is essential if we are to provide the necessary conditions where learning can most deeply and intimately begin.” bell hooks is the epitome of the Hierophant She is a preacher, a poet, an insurgent intellectual. Her spiritual tradition, practice & teachings are long & fruitful. She valued voice, & spoke with authority in languages of theory as well as vernacular, language of spirit as well as politics. She was an aesthete and a revolutionary. She, like the Hierophant, affirms knowledge is transformational so long as it in relation to how one lives From her teaching, I know my vocation to be a Hierophant. To offer Tarot as a means of transgression. My classroom, rather than a space of confinement & punishment, is a space of promise & possibility. My teachings go against the academic grain by situating knowledge in mine and my students lived experiences. Mine are communities of practice, where learning is contextual & meaningful Power hierarchies are removed, all are both teachers and learners I inspire my students, as bell has inspired me, as tarot continues to inspire me, to create new forms of knowledge, new ways of knowing, thinking & being. Together we summon the courage to transform the world. TENZ, my new tarot course is open for enrollment. It is a course in radical literacy, reading in such a manner that initiates us into an interiority that refuses binaries of mind & body, reason & emotion, intellect & affect. Offered in the constitution of a self, and us , a being who are literate in liberation Class starts Sunday Sept 18 enroll with the lynk en bio. feel free to reach with any questions. Missing you bell, but so grateful to carry on in your tradition

Student was kicked out of class for asking questions. How are you going to call yourself a teacher when you can’t even answer an simple innocent question that a student asked you? Unless she knows her thinking is flawed and is just another brainwashed feminist, who’s in denial and unwilling to change her flawed thinking. @feminist @thebabylonbee #feminist #feminism #teacher #feministteacher #woke #woketeachers #society #cancel #cancelculture #wokeculture #politics #brainwashed

The cover of issue 34.1 features art by Althea Murphy-Price, whose work has been featured in such publications as Art Papers Magazine, Art in Print Magazine, Printmaking Today (UK), CAA Reviews Journal, Printmaking: A Complete Guide to Materials and Process, and Printmakers Today. She received her B.A. Fine Art from Spelman College before receiving her Master of Arts in Printmaking and Painting from Purdue University and her Masters of Fine Arts from the Tyler School of Art, Temple University. She has been exhibited widely nationally as well as international cities in Spain, China, Japan, Italy and Sweden. Althea shared with us the following statement: “The genesis of this work was inspired by a number of subjects, Alice Walker's "In Search of our Mothers Gardens", the hashtag #BlackGirlMagic which has become its own movement, and the BLM movement, all of which are tied together by my love, aspirations, and fears for my daughters, my mothers, myself and all other women. It is by our own strength and resilience that we exist in a state of constant flux and adaptation searching for ways to bolster ourselves from within.” . Althea would like us to consider the following quote: “The denial of individuality is itself the problem; it forces one to become deviant or to fight to keep alive one's uniqueness and requires the use of vital energies to protect oneself. Or, it leads to the surrendering of oneself to the demands of others, thus the giving up of one's own source of energy and power. The turning over of one's self to someone else undermines decision making, health, and well-being” by Moustakas, C.E. Being-In, Being-For, Being-With .
