One of my favorite art works from the current exhibition at El Museo del Barrio “Amalia Mesa Bains: Archeology of Memory.” Mesa-Bains, artist, curator, and scholar, is a pioneer in the Chicanx art movement that started in the 70s. Her work is female/community centered and rooted in the Day of the Dead altar tradition. “Cihuateotl with Mirror from Private Landscapes and Public Territories”, 2018 About this work, the artist says, “it’s about the women who can’t fit into the spaces they are given and it is not just about size, because tiny women have the same problems, it’s all about making a space for yourself that is natural to you, not what is given to you or forced on you. It’s really about how to be courageous and how to be strong and how to stand up for the things that actually matter to you when the space doesn’t allow it. So I made this landscape, this place for this giant woman, with her giant dress and her giant cape ( not pictured) and her giant mirror because I wanted to acknowledge that for many women, they’re forced through marriage, through domination, through professional limitations, to be in spaces that really aren’t big enough for them. The process of making art and telling a story sometimes takes weeks, months and even years. This one I’ve been working on since my trip to Tuscon last year with the Catalyst for Change @southwestfolklife fellows. I was in the middle of the desert, surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of year-old ancestor saguaros, and the brilliant flow of energy that poured like ocean waves, from each artist’s heart. Amalia, My introduction to your artistry came in 1993 at the Fresno Museum. Fresh out of college, I was fortunate to be working alongside the inspiring Lilia Chavez at Arte Americas. It was a summer marked by the passing of Cesar Chavez, coinciding with our efforts in organizing Chile Colorado, a solo exhibition by the late Ernie Palomino, my esteemed art professor. That summer, amidst tributes to Cesar and Ernie's showcase, your work included in CARA resonated profoundly. It took 31 years and a change of scenery to finally embrace you in person and express my deepest gratitude: ¡MUCHAS GRACIAS POR TODO, MAESTRA! ¡ERES UNA CHINGONA! Your invaluable teachings have left an indelible mark; I carry your passion with me every day, and YOUR validation and friendship means the world.
