Una de las anécdotas que Dapper Dan cuenta en sus memorias es la pelea que tuvo lugar frente a su tienda entre los boxeadores Mike Tyson y Mitch Green en 1988 (y que para quien quiera investigar es un desvío del camino que nos lleva a un universo, el del boxeo, fascinante): “Mike había ido a la tienda para recoger una chaqueta que le había hecho con las palabras ‘Don’t Believe the Hype’ cosidas en la espalda en letras mayúsculas negras, una referencia a la popular canción del mismo título de Public Enemy. Más tarde Mike levantaría la chaqueta en la rueda de prensa donde habló de lo que había sucedido esa noche, con la mano derecha enyesada como prueba adicional. [...] Al día siguiente el suceso apareció en el New York Times con el titular ‘Tyson se lastima la mano derecha en una pelea con un boxeador’. Escribieron que mi tienda era ‘un negocio llamado Dapper Dan, que Tyson describió como ‘una tienda de ropa abierta toda la noche que atiende a artistas’ adonde había ido ‘a recoger una prenda de 850$’. Para muchas personas que no tenían ni idea de quién era yo o a qué me dedicaba, la historia debió suscitar más preguntas que respuestas. ¿Qué diablos estaba haciendo Tyson comprado ropa a las cuatro de la mañana?
