In the 1960s, the Soviet Union undertook a major water diversion project on the arid plains of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. The region’s two major rivers, fed by snowmelt and precipitation in faraway mountains, were used to transform the desert into farms for cotton and other crops. Before the project, the Syr Darya and the Amu Darya rivers flowed down from the mountains, cut northwest through the Kyzylkum Desert, and finally pooled together in the lowest part of the basin. The lake they made, the Aral Sea, was once the fourth largest in the world. Although irrigation made the desert bloom, it devastated the Aral Sea. As the Aral Sea has dried up, fisheries and the communities that depended on them collapsed. The increasingly salty water became polluted with fertilizer and pesticides. The blowing dust from the exposed lakebed, contaminated with agricultural chemicals, became a public health hazard. The salty dust blew off the lakebed and settled onto fields, degrading the soil. Croplands had to be flushed with larger and larger volumes of river water. LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu during a sentitization forum on steps to take during flooding in Lagos, said the exercise was in continuation of its flood mitigation and adaption awareness campaign. Oke-Osanyintolu noted that flooding in the local council development areas, which often wreaks havoc on lives and the environment was man-made. Capitalism from a theoretical standpoint is known for its general disdain towards monopolies, duopolies, and oligopolies. Capitalism has always been an advocate for the free market, one that promotes competition and believes its the driver of individual prosperity. But does our current capitalist reality match these beliefs? Upon reading the book “The Myth of Capitalism”, some interesting points were made ever-apparent. America (and as an extension of globalization, the whole world) are suffering from a SEVERE duopoly/oligopoly problem. Think about it. What options do you have for credit card payment? Visa and MasterCard. What are your options for gaming consoles? Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo. In the other slides, you will see the statistics which back this observation up. Alarmingly, this drop in competition spans plenty of other industries. “The Economist” found that between the years 1997 and 2012, 2/3s of American industries were concentrated in the hands of a few firms. In 1995, the top 100 companies accounted for 53% of all income from publicly traded firms; but by 2015, they captured a whopping 84% of all profits. This is disastrous for the economy. Rising market power by dominant firms creates less competition, lower investment in the real economy, lower productivity, less economic dynamism, high prices for dominant firms, lower wages, and subsequently, a greater inequality in wealth. Naturally, its equally as disastrous politically. With economic power comes political power. As such, political influence gets concentrated in the hands of these monopolists, meaning they have a greater stranglehold on regulators and legislators. While it is detrimental to the common person, you can imagine how beneficial it is for the monopolists themselves. In a market that contains less competition, a complete takeover on it occurs. Their profits are infinitely higher coupled with, abnormal stock returns, and more profitable merger and acquisition deals. Through these findings, we could see there exists something fundamentally broken in our economy: capitalism isn’t functioning how its meant to.

The earthquake that struck Turkey on February 6th, 2023, killed at least 45,000 people, made millions of people homeless across almost a dozen cities, and resulted in immediate damage estimated at $34 billion. The Turkish Enterprise and Business Confederation estimates the total cost of the earthquake at $84.1 billion, with housing accounting for the lion's share of that amount at $70.8 billion. Arda Tunca, an economist with PolitikYol, said the economic disaster is unprecedented and could determine the course of presidential and parliamentary elections expected in mid-May. 15% of Turkey's population lives in the provinces most severely damaged by the earthquake, and they contribute 14% of the country's income from agriculture and fisheries, 11% of the income tax, and 9% of the GDP. Selva Demiralp, an economist at Koc University in Istanbul, stated that there is no recessionary threat owing to the earthquake. However the ticket prices are so high and they are only for one admission on one day 😬. So we got there early and made sure we saw everything. So sad and counter productive.
