Check out this awesome stone crab we caught! Stone crabs are a delicious and they’re also really cool looking. This one was particularly large, and was returned to the water unscathed. Stone crabs are found in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea and are continuing to grow in prevalence and presence in the lowcountry waters of South Carolina. They’re typically caught in traps, and only the claws are harvested. The crabs are then released back into the wild to regenerate their claws. Stone crab claws are a popular seafood delicacy. They can be steamed, grilled, or fried. They’re often served with drawn butter or cocktail sauce. If you’re looking for a delicious and sustainable seafood option, be sure to try stone crab claws. This week we have a limited supply of pawpaws and sumac berries to sell, courtesy of Craig Hastings of western North Carolina. Pawpaw trees are the only local species of a mainly tropical plant family. They provide us with the largest edible fruit in North America and have tropical notes of banana, mango, vanilla, and citrus. Even if you haven't seen this native fruit, you've probably heard the song "Way Down Yonder In the Pawpaw Patch" Sumac berries are popular as a spice in Middle Eastern cuisine, but also grow natively and abundantly in western NC. These berries store for long periods of time and can easily be made into tea, ground for seasoning, or used in a pickle brine. Y’all! As soon as @rollensrawgrains came across my #FYP and I learned rice was grown in the #carolinas I ran to place an order. The amount of googling I’ve done this week on the history of rice growing in the #south y’all…How did I miss that rice was be grown in #sc all my years? I ordered a lil variety and #hoppinjohn is absolutely on the menu this week. I had to get the red peas! Growing up field peas have always been my favorite…any variety. It’s comfort food for me, bringing back memories of eating at Maw-Maw’s table the very crops she and Paw-Paw had me in the gardens plantin’, pickin’, and preppin’ (in this case shellin’ on the porch) with them teaching me lessons I dearly appreciate today.

They started their farm in 2014 and currently service over 40 restaurants between Winston Salem and Charlotte as well as many families in the area. Her focus is on taste, which sometimes means growing varieties that are not the best to store and transport, but that doesn't deter Kim. Our Farm is part of Roots Farm: a preservation project of 330 acres of forest and farmland in a growing urban area of Union County. Our Farm is managed by @toddajackson_rootsfarm, a Charlotte native specialized in intensive urban agriculture. We're glad to be working with Roots Farm towards their mission of community engagement and agricultural education and look forward to carrying their produce again in the spring!
Jessica and Matt Evans started like any homestead would, with a few egg-laying chickens. A few chickens for eggs led to some meat chickens and a goat on just a couple of acres in Southern California. When looking for a new place to raise their family, the Evans set their sites on a farm in Mt. Ulla, North Carolina that they now call home. On their farm you’ll find an array of poultry, pigs, and sheep roaming freely in the pastures and the woods. Free Range Brewing's Cultivating Community Dinner Series is one of our favorite local food events. After participating in two of the dinners, we recently attended the Eh'vivi ("tasty" in Ewe) Ghanian Dinner created by Chef Awo Amenumey and the experience was amazing. We're still dreaming about the Baobab ice cream with hibiscus reduction! Meet North Carolina's dairy champs! 🐄 Dairy farming runs deep in the Bowman family. What started out as a side operation selling "barnyard" milk has expanded to 7,000 gallons of production a week over a few generations. Through this expansion, they haven't lost a love for their cows, which they say are part of the family. Happy cows make a wholesome product you can feel good about buying! If you think this milk tastes better than your average gallon of milk, it's not in your head. Homeland takes their time, pasteurizing at a lower temperature for a longer amount of time than most dairy producers. Meet the Barbee Family of Barbee Farms in Concord, NC 🧑🌾 @barbee_farms has the distinct honor of being a North Carolina century farm, meaning their farm has been in operation for over 100 years. As farm manager, Brent Barbee is the sixth generation to run this farm. Since 2008, the farm has focused on growing a diverse offering of vegetables and fruits through all four seasons. The Barbees are dedicated to growing quality, homegrown produce for their community while enriching the soil for generations to come. His son Sam began running the farm with Bob in 2010 after attending Clemson University to earn a degree in Agriculture Economics. A true Queen in the QC, Julia Simon has been the driving force behind vegan cuisine in Charlotte for over 10 years now. Julia and her team run both Nourish, a meal delivery service, and Plant Joy, a food hall at Camp North End. Nourish's roots in Charlotte date back to 2012. The all vegan and gluten free meal delivery service was far ahead of its time and a stronghold for those needing food alternatives in our city. Plant Joy is Julia and her team's most recent venture. This food stall has been open since November, 2020 and has heavy emphasis on local sourcing, is 100% vegan, and dietary inclusive.
