What we’re up to today. Recovering from the flu and getting our garden beds ready for planting. The hubs has planted onion, potatoes and carrots and today our Sunflower bed is ready to plant. A neighborhood tradition, it’s 30 feet of every kind of sunflower that grows. A natural fence of sunshine! Chinese Woad, Isatis Indigotica, shoots up and blooms before regular woad, Isatis tinctoria. It’s been a really early spring here and the woods don’t seem to have as tall stems this year, and I think it has to do with the sudden onset of warm weather pushing them to bloom more quickly. Chinese Woad contains more indigotin than regular woad, and I feel like it grows larger more hardy leaves that grow back quickly. Färber-Mädchenauge, botanisch Coreopsis tinctoria | Das Färber-Mädchenauge heißt auch Schöngesicht – beide Namen ziemlich lieblich! Magst du einen lieber? Die hübschen Blüten und filigranen Blätter passen auch dazu. Empfindlich ist diese Färberblume aber nicht – wenn sie gut etabliert ist, steckt sie trockene Phasen gut weg. Und blüht ohne Ende! Naja, bis zum Frost zumindest. 🌼 Deswegen ist sie, glaube ich, auch mein Liebling beim Ernten im Färbegarten. (Beim Gemüse übertrifft für mich ja nichts das Ausbuddeln eigener Kartoffeln…) In der Hochsaison bin ich mit dem Pflücken der Blüten ganz schön beschäftigt – ich ernte sie von Hand und pflücke nur die Blüten, die schon richtig geöffnet sind. Das dauert, aber ist eine schöne Beschäftigung! Einen Teil der Blüten lasse ich immer stehen für die Ernte beim nächsten Mal. So bleibt immer noch was stehen für die Insekten. Von denen kann ich beim Blütenpflücken immer reichlich beobachten. 🌼 Aussäen: Ich hab die klitzekleinen Samen vom Färber-Mädchenauge gerade gesät, und zwar drinnen. So kann ich etwas früher mit der Ernte beginnen als bei der Direktsaat, und die Erfolgsquote beim Saatgut ist so auch größer. Und Achtung, die Samen sind Lichtkeimer! It may be a gloomy January day outside, but fresh life is starting in the dye seed trials! 🌱 These woad seeds are starting to sprout just 4 days after I prepared them. It’s also interesting to see the pigment in the seed husks - it varies from brown to deep blue on the wet paper towels. Has anyone dyed using woad seed? Woad seeds (Isatis Tinctoria) for sale! This is a biennial dye plant, giving a rosette of indigo baring leaves in the first year and then shooting up to 1.5mtrs tall and flowering / seeding prolifically in the second year. There are many ways to use the leaves for dye, you can do a simple ice method, salt rub method or go with the more potent vat method. The seeds themselves can also be used to dye and are excellent in a bundle dye as they scatter nicely, also easy to put into a solar dye jar or made into a dye bath. Fresh seeds added to the seed library! I planted these Iris pseudacorus, or yellow flag, at the pond in @huerta_cantarranas, back in 2018, because it is a riverside plant useful as a phytoremediant. Its roots release oxygen into the water and that creates a colony of aerobic bacteria and that allows and accelerates the natural process of degrading organic matter. And also, it is a dye plant. #naturaldyejuly Day 11 Green You would think that green would be easy to come by as a natural dye right? However the chlorophyll we see in all the plants around us washed out pretty easily. There are some dye plants that give a good colourfast green but you will find more often than not dyers mix their own green with a mix of a yellow and blue dye plant. This is my first green dye and it was an accident! The woad seeds which I thought would give blue have been solar dyeing a piece of yellowy linen. It came out of a very strong tannin bath much yellower than anticipated and it's affecting all my dye results a little more than expected too... I feel like everything is a dye experiment and getting consistent results is a serious art and science combined! I must up my note keeping game... My first black hollyhock is blooming! Perfect timing for #naturaldyejuly Day 9 Garden theme. I started these plants last year so it's been a long wait but should be worth it! They give a dark bluey purple print from what i've seen so i think the time for eco prints has arrived 🌸 I also spotted some Cosmos in a friends garden which i might have to take advantage of for this purpose as mine never came up this year 🙏 Swipe to see the state of disarray my garden is at the moment. I have barely enough time to dye being a full time mum, let alone keep on top of the weeds! Although I have spent a lot of time harvest copious seeds this year too so feeling successful anyway 🥰 I try my best to save water and you'll see the buckets of water near my tap that have been filled from rinsing just a few fabrics... 🙈 rinsing dyes and pretreatments uses so much water so in order to be as sustainable as i can i save it and use it for rinsing jars, dyepots and ultimately watering the garden. The last of my dye garden has been planted finally! This is the 2nd attempt at getting these seeds to germinate & take off. 1st attempt worked, but our cold, dreary spring just couldn't sustain the seedlings & I don't use grow lights. The black & red Hopi dye plants are in the ground & growing well, which is a huge boost. I also planted 3 varieties of flax this year just to see if I could find any difference between fiber flax & eating flax. These are Daphne gnidium seeds, a shrub growing along the Mediterranean basin, but not well known for dyeing or medicinal purposes, only few people heard off that and not many practicioners. The color you can obtain is a type of yellow from the leaves. It has tiny white flowers and the fruits are little red drupes, very nice for little birds who can climb on their branches. A mixture of new plants and old... and some educational plans brewing 🙏 Pic 1: My woad plants from last year are starting to flower so i can collect and dye with the seeds this year which is really exciting. Pic 2: New comers... Safflower, Cosmos, Chamomile and more Woad! Pic 3: A stunted baby madder which survived the winter, i can harvest her the year after her siblings! It's such a split discipline when you start growing your own dye plants too! There is so much to learn, it can be overwhelming and so far i'm only focusing on using cellulose fibres aswell! 😂 Loosely on the subject of spliting your time and focus across practices... I've made some pretty big decisions recently about my natural dye journey. I had been tempted by an honors degree offered locally in sustainable textile design which partially included natural dyes. The temptation to do an official course like that which gives me a recognised qualification along with student finance was strong. However I've decided that the compromise of studying other textiles related subjects i'm less interested in isn't worth it and I will be filling my new found freedom in september (when my toddler starts pre-school!) with self study education from some of the most inspiring natural dyers I have found providing such resources. So far I am completely head over heals with anticipation for immediately starting subscriptions with @wild_fire_water_ & @thedogwooddyer Aswell as further courses I intend to delve into (when i have a bit more time) from @thewilddyery.
