For the last two years, we have put a lot of efforts in creating qualitative projects. It’s now time for sharing them to the public on our new project page! In 2022, nine students from @ensci_les_ateliers_paris took part in our humanitarian design workshop. Our teachers Thomas Jäger, Lison Guéguen, Gwenn Descamps, and Cédric Fettouche prepared a 40-hour course where the students engaged in activities related to design, humanitarian aid, power and privileges, participatory practices, and design fiction. For this course, we collaborated with the French NGO @watizatparis and provided the students with the opportunity to facilitate a workshop with Watizat's employees and users at @lesamarresparis. This experience offered the students a deeper understanding of the humanitarian sector, as well as the necessary accountability and ethics required for such work. At the workshop's conclusion, the students received praise from the participants who appeared convinced of the beneficial approach of this collaborative exercise. The NGO also received a report compiling all the ideas discussed during the workshop. Together with the students, we also deliberated on the skills essential for humanitarian designers to carry out their work successfully. While not everyone may embark on such a complex journey, we hope that this intensive course will inspire today's students to pursue a professional career where ethic is at the forefront of their values. Design and Earth Day | 3. Today, over three quarters of the land in Jordan is arid desert with only one per cent of it occupied by trees. Yet thousands of years ago, trees, bushes, grasses and flowering plants flourished throughout Jordan, and in its neighbouring countries in the Middle East. Jordan’s ecology has already suffered severely due to the country’s desertification, and risks incurring even greater damage in the future, which is why the Jordanian architect and urban forester, Deema Assaf, decided to take action by designing a new way of transforming areas of desert into woodland. . Starting six years ago, Assaf, who spent ten years in practice after studying architecture at the University of Jordan, founded TAYYŪN, a research studio in Amman to develop a methodology of regenerating Jordan’s eco-systems by cultivating native forests on land where trees had thrived many centuries ago. She collaborated with the Miyawaki Institute in Japan to adapt its formula for accelerating the growth of new trees to suit Jordan’s climate and soil, and started to cultivate a small forest on her first site, a small private plot of land, in 2018. . Assaf and her colleagues at TAYYŪN have since planted six more forests in Jordan, and are starting to work in other countries. They are also compiling a database of native Jordanian trees and plants, as well as harvesting seeds with which to plant their forests, and running community workshops to encourage more people to help their efforts to revitalise Jordan’s ecosystem. Design and Earth Day | 1. Today is Earth Day 2024. It comes after a week in which the United Arab Emirates was flooded by the heaviest rainfall since records began 75 years ago, and when many parts of our planet are poised for another terrifyingly hot summer of drought and wildfires as El Niño transitions to La Niña. All of which makes Earth Day’s mission to raise awareness of the ecological threats we face and the importance of conserving our environment more important than ever. . What better way to mark it than by remembering this poster made by the artist Robert Rauschenberg for the launch of the first Earth Day on 22 April 1970. Earth Day was founded by a US senator, Gaylord Nelson, who was so horrified by the ecological damage caused by an oil spill off the coast of Southern California in 1969, that he decided to launch what he called a “national teach-in” to raise awareness of the dangers posed by air and water pollution. Nelson was a Democrat, but, from the outset, he urged Republican politicians to support Earth Day alongside his fellow Democrats to maximise public support. . Rauschenberg shared Nelson’s ecological concerns having grown up in Port Arthur, a Texan oil refinery town on the Gulf of Mexico, where he had watched polluted air belching out of the oil derricks. For the rest of his life, he remained deeply committed to environmentalism and enthusiastically agreed to an invitation to make an edition of 10,300 posters for the first Earth Day to be sold to benefit the American Environment Foundation. . Earth Day 1970, is a brutal, unflinching depiction of the horrific damage caused by the remorseless, poorly regulated industrialisation that Rauschenberg observed as a child. At this stage in life I have become extremely involved in design activism. So what is design activism? Design activism is about using your talents as a designer to create a positive impact in the world. I create things to send messages about social change. As a business owner I also make sure to align myself with those who are bringing about change. Not just to rock the boat but true and significant change. I steer clear of cultural appropriators and others looking to cause more drama than good. I pay attention. I listen I watch. I feel more businesses should embrace these models for change. The project “Climate-Centered Design – A guided journal for taking” builds upon the master project “Designing for More than Human Futures – Rethinking design education beyond human-centered realities”. It recognizes that design contributes to the challenges in the climate crisis. Climate change can be overwhelming, with doomsday scenarios creating a sense of individual powerlessness. Being a socially and environmentally responsible designer is difficult nowadays, as they face the paradox of challenging the status quo while economically sustaining themselves. However, concrete steps for action are often lacking. The project aims to translate theoretical research into a practical tool for design students, motivating them to take action and fostering a sense of agency. In the form of a “guided journal” a first prototype was developed to establish a guide for taking action. Return and Earn is an awesome scheme. It places greater financial responsibility on the corporations who produce drink containers and has collected over 10 billion pieces of recyclable waste since its inception in 2017. Between 2021-22, 2.3 billion containers were recycled through various affiliated return stations across NSW. However, 3.6 billion containers were supplied to the state during that period. That means that 1.3 billion containers were disposed of through regular old recycling bins, or worse general waste. 1.3 billion containers that could have been collected and redeemed for refund by informal waste collectors in NSW. Above is a bit of a breakdown of my research focus - informal waste collection. While my research touches on the issues of waste, recycling and sustainability, I’ve been more interested in the people who engage in waste collection and how design intervention could be used to improve their lives. At times I’ve found myself wondering if any of the work I’ve done is worth anything at all. Some problems are too complex to feel like you’re making any headway. But I read something recently that made me feel a lot better about my efforts over the past three years. In the conclusion of Carl DiSalvo’s (2023) book “Design as Democratic Enquiry”, he reflects on his work in small scale, experimental projects: ‘…I still maintain that such work is valuable. Take foraging as an example. Foraging will not solve food insecurity. There is simply not enough produce growing wild to feed all of those in need, and most people want more than fruit to subsist on. It is easy to dismiss foraging. But for the person at the shelter who is receiving that foraged apple or pear, it matters. It matters that they have fresh fruit and healthy food that they might not otherwise have. It also matters that someone cared enough to do the work to share that fruit. To dismiss foraging or other circumscribed efforts expresses a privileged position about what kind of action is meaningful.’ (p. 182) My project won’t solve the waste problem, but it may make one collectors day more safe and pleasant, and that outcome is good enough for me! #waste #recycling #sustainability #informalwasteworkers #informalwastecollectors #innerwest #innerwestsydney #socialdesign #socialinnovation #designactivism
