Speaking of Blue Note and Elvin Jones who were included in the subject of my previous post. We have a fairly well known but maybe under appreciated release from Elvin and the label's 70's output. This release came from 1973, it's a pretty affordable one for Blue Note standards as well, very thoughtful modal jazz with quite a few innovative moments throughout. Elvin Jone's Blue Notes tend to be pretty cutting edge consistently, if that isn't enough...He is joined with some names that would guarantee this is a worthwhile listen such as David Liebman on tenor and soprano, Joe Farrell on flute, bass flute, tenor sax and English horn. George Coleman and Steve Grossman on tenors as well, Pepper Adams on baritone sax, Thad Jones on flugelhorn, Jan Hammer on piano and keyboard, percussionist including Candido and Frank Ippolito, Gene Perla on bass, and Albert Duffy on timpani. So many names that make this record an excellent example of a record that seamlessly combines traditional aspects of jazz with many exciting and tasteful infusions of other subsections of the genre. A few Elvin originals here, a couple written by Gene Perla, one from Liebman, Also one from Tadd Dameron. Grab this if you see it. ECM Sleeves of Desire: A Cover Story, 1996 I admired the ECM aesthetic long before I heard any of the music. It was a visual identity that represented something seemingly clever, avant-garde and a bit intimidating. I eventually got around to listening to these albums, starting with minimalist composers like Arvo Pärt and Steve Reich, then moving through to the jazz artists you most commonly associate with the label. This beautiful book chronicles the history of ECM sleeves. The cover features a debossed square which is a motif that echoes throughout the pages. In text sections the square contains a column of Univers Bold, while on image pages it is filled with sleeve art. Reading the Bill Frisell book reminded me of this excellent record by drummer Billy Hart who is joined by Frisell here (penning two of the songs) along with former Herbie Hancock / Mwandishi bandmate Eddie Henderson, bassist Eddie Gomez (from Bill Evan’s classic trio), Kenny Kirkland (at the height of his Marsalis brothers association), Miles Davis funk-era band member Dave Liebman and pre-Tonight-Show Kevin Eubanks. Talk about an all-star cast!! Overall, it’s pretty decent 80s fusion typical of Gramavision Records with a bit of ECM influence and some of that magical Bill Frisell flair. I bought this at a record fair in college for around $2 so I feel like I’ve got my money’s worth from this thing for the past 30 years or so.
