💡 More than two years have passed since the Russian full invasion of Ukraine in 2022. A large number of Russians, among them artists, cultural workers, and activists, have since then left their country, many of them opting to migrate to the neighbouring South Caucasus in search for "free space". This development intensified social, economic and cultural tensions in Armenia and Georgia. 📚 The new ifa study "'Relocating' the Russian Cultural Scene: The Case of the South Caucasus (Armenia and Georgia)" by Tigran Amiryan @l_oriental @csn_lab explores these dynamics and exemplifies the importance of cultural rights for international cultural cooperation. ❓What kind of changes occurred among Russian cultural actors who relocated to Georgia & Armenia due to the outbreak of the war? Last week, we traveled to Athens for three days of challenging co-creation workshops focused on cultural diversity. As foreign choreographers from Germany, we dived into research, improvisation and creation processes and concluded with a small performance with the participants at Academia Platonos, in Athens. Many questions popped up in our heads before we left: How will we deal with language difficulties? How can we take care of people by dancing with them? Stepping out of our comfort zone is where the magic happens! We are more than thankful and looking back with appreciation to this experience of exchange, the artistic work with the participants and our shared engagement in insightful reflections on culturally sensitive dance education. Exciting news from Seneca Intensiv! As a partner institution in the SINIPARKSI project, we organized the kick-off workshop in February with four choreographers from Greece, Croatia, France and Germany. The workshop fostered rich exchanges on different dance pedagogical practices and laid the groundwork for our collaborative journey ahead. Key discussions revolved around structuring the training kit. During the following challenges of practice in Greece, Croatia, and France, we will research on culturally sensitive dance education. At the end of the project, a training kit will be presented as a tool for dance pedagogical professionalization. The workshop also outlined roles and responsibilities for upcoming challenges across Athens, Karlovac, Crete, and Briançon. The European exchange project SINIPARKSI aims to make contemporary dance accessible to as many people as possible while consciously embracing the cultural diversity of people living in Europe. To realize this aspiration in dance projects, there is a need for further training opportunities for choreographers and dance teachers on how to deal with human and social variety in dance. Through the collaboration of four European dance institutes, a support program will be developed and made publicly accessible. Four European dance companies and dance school from France, Greece, Germany and Croatia will exchange ideas about the potential, practices, and challenges of cultural diversity in dance projects. The choreographers consciously challenge their artistic and pedagogical practice in cultural contexts other than the ones they are familiar with, by co-creating with different kinds of local communities in Europe, including people with or without dance experience. This way, the choreographers exchange and further develop their own practice. The knowledge gained will be shared with other choreographers in Europe in the form of a „training kit“, a written pedagogical guide enriched with a video tutorial. Siniparksi project aims to promote the development and dissemination of community artistic projects that respect the cultural rights in Europe. A Malaysian court has handed down charges against a retail chain and supplier after it put socks emblazoned with the word “Allah” on sale. Five people were charged on Tuesday with hurting religious feelings after photos of the offending articles of clothing caused outrage on social media. Two executives from the KK Super Mart convenience store chain – CEO Chai Kee Kan and his wife, Loh Siew Mui, who serves as a company director – were charged with “deliberately intending to hurt … religious feelings”, according to the charge sheet. Three representatives from supplier Xin Jian Chang were also charged. KK Super Mart is suing the supplier for “sabotage” over losses and damage to the chain’s reputation. All defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. If convicted, they face up to a year in jail, a fine, or both penalties combined. Religion is a sensitive issue in the Muslim-majority nation. The sale of the socks, which amounted to just 14 pairs, according to KK Super Mart, during the holy month of Ramadan prompted particular outrage among fasting Muslims. For the third film, Wang Chong, a Chinese actor, theatre director, filmmaker, and Safemuse artist in residence, sits down for a conversation with Ellen Horn, a former Norwegian Minister of Culture, former Director of the Norwegian National Theatre and "Riksteatret", and foremost, an actor, at the beautiful Oslo City Hall. Unfortunately, this unjust law is part of a long history of medical colonialism in Hawai’i, in which US settlers have forced traditional midwives out of business and attempted to erase time-honored indigenous birth practices. In a state that desperately needs increased maternal health support, slashing access to midwifery is exactly the opposite of what studies show is needed to reverse poor health outcomes. The legal status of psychedelics in Mexico is complex and somewhat ambiguous. While most psychedelics are generally considered illegal, there is an exception outlined in Article 195 bis of the Federal Penal Code, which permits the use of psilocybin mushrooms and 5-MeO-DMT for traditional spiritual practices or ceremonies. This provision is designed to protect the cultural and religious rights of indigenous communities. It has led to the growth of "psychedelic tourism" in Mexico, where people visit for transformative spiritual experiences. Outside of this provision, most psychedelics are illegal in Mexico. Possession of psilocybin mushrooms outside of a therapeutic environment can result in hefty fines and prison sentences lasting 4-7 years. However, Mexico is home to a growing number of psilocybin retreat centers that legally operate under the provisions of Article 195 bis, aiming to address mental health challenges. Coming out of our SDC weekend, I had a moment to reflect on the representation of the Greens Party and how thankful I felt knowing my age or ethnicity would never be of concern when pursuing a position in parliament with the greens. This is because we have MPs and senators, as young as 29 covering so many diverse ethnicities, representing the party today. @mchandlermather @mehreenfaruqi are just two examples of this representation.
