He loves mosses and lichens and fungi and all that lovely earthy stuff 🌱 The first picture shows Juniper Haircap Moss, green and spikey, good protection against thieves so the old ones reckoned. I recently discovered a box of books which had been totally forgotten. [Actually, that's not unusual.] About forty books by H.E. Bates. I picked one at random for casual reading - a collection of short stories with the generic title "The Watercress Girl". Now, although an avid reader, for some reason I usually have a problem with short stories, and I can't reason why. Not so with these, they are a delight. Mainly slightly haunting tales of country childhoods remembered. "There was at one time a tale that Mr Candleton was connected with wine. I could well believe this. Like his house, Mr Candleton's face had toned to a remarkably pleasant shade of inflammable rose." This copy published by The Country Book Club, which had greater charm than some, and enhanced with chapterheads by Hazel Pope. This was a quick read for me. With how busy i am i usually dont get through a book in only two days but this was one of the exceptions. I found this to be a book i just could not put down. I was up late reading and back into it as soon as i finished work. With just under 400 pages its not the longest book but its highly addicting. I wi say however, if you pick this book up. Grab your favourite snack, a comfy chair and a large coffee because you wont want move. Yet again an emotional roller coaster of a book. True colours is a story of discovery. This book WILL make you cry. I picked it up thinking it would be a cute little country story. I was very wrong. It is anything but. Yes there are moments where its simple but then it takes a turn and throws you into a loophole of madness where you feel such an agonising hatted towards some characters and wishing you could reach out and hug others. If i could read it again for the first time, even with all the tears i shed. I would. No second thoughts. I would pick this book up again and again. And i hope you as a reader give this book a chance to shine and to make you feel EVERYTHING. - - - - - The Grey sisters have always looked after one another. After yesterday's introduction to the Wisherman, I thought you might like to know a little more about this magical fellow. 🐸 His name is Romney, he is a highly respected Wisherman. He comes from a long line of Wisherfolk. His father was a famous Wisherman, and his Grandfather before that, and so on. Romney hails from across the border, the land of Wales. (His name means 'winding river' in Welsh). He originally came to my neck-o-the-woods (Herefordshire) many years ago, in answer to a request from the local Wisherfolk. They were sorely in need of a temporary Wisherman, to cover the absence of the one that "ran off with a fairy". It was only supposed to be for a short while, until the other returned or they found a suitable local chap to take the role. However, they all liked Romney so much that they asked him to stay. So he has happily been here ever since. His abode is beneath the Wishing Tree, by the magic pond where he fishes for wishes. I must say, he does an excellent job, very proficient. He doesn't grant all wishes you see. Only the good ones, none that may be harmful. "Some wishes" he says "are not quite developed enough, they need a little extra thought, for we must all be very careful about what we wish for, wishes must be very carefully considered ". He calls these un-ready wishes "tiddlers". It must be Autumn!🍁🍂🍁🎃 It is certainly getting cooler now, and the nights draw in a little earlier each day, so I decided it was time to put away my Summer clothes. Phew! I think I have earned this lovely cup of tea and to rest my paws after a busy day. I have been cleaning and putting my wagon in order, so here you get your first look inside, now that I have moved in. Sweep the floor and dust the cupboards (the only dust I like is fairy dust!). I'm all ready for action today! With my new shift-dress and surcoat and my new leather boots. What do you think of my new outfit? So, despite the unseasonably rainy weather, I shall not get wet feet! I decided to test out my new boots by doing a spot of foraging, in between showers. I went to gather a basket of thistle-down, so soft and fluffy, I shall use it to stuff some pillows. At last, a dry day! We have managed to get quite a few things done, I even had a new door fitted to my wagon! Next tasks are to fix the windows and roof. We returned home today and thought perhaps it might be nice to have a campfire to cook our dinner. Alas, the sunshine turned to rain again☔ so our plans were scuppered. "Hey Ho" said the Wagon Witch "we shall just have to have an indoor picnic! 🥪🥗Let us go to my wagon and I will prepare some tasty nibbles" she declared. Mary Timrus and I were greatly in favour of this idea. "I shall play us some jolly tunes to keep us in good cheer" I said🎶 "with the lovely new whistle that Mary gave me"🎵 "And I shall begin measuring up the curtains for Hazel's wagon" said Mary, unpacking her tape measure and sewing basket. 🧵 We had a very cosy afternoon, with the rain pattering on the roof of the Witch's Wagon. It also gave me a chance to enjoy some of the other gifts I received for my birthday. A new cauldron for cooking up my potions, from the Wagon Witch. Tomorrow we return to our wagons, so today we took our friend Mulchin to do some local foraging. Mulchin is the nephew of the Head Gardner, Mr. Ericaceous Digworthy (known as Eric to his friends), a very important fellow in the Gnome Guards, who looks after the gardens and vegetable patches hereabouts. He asked me to take young Mulchin under my wing for the day, to teach him a little about the wild herbs. So we gathered some fresh leaves and flowers and I explained to Mulchin how we use them. Red Clover, Wild Chamomile (Pineapple Weed) and Lemon Balm to make our teas. Rosebay Willow Herb for our cordials and Ash Keys for pickling. I am pleased to report that Mulchin is a very fast learner. He currently serves as apprentice to his Uncle, so it is well that he learns quickly and will be a good gardner in future (presently he has the responsibility of tending the strawberry patch, which he does admirably🍓). . Oh it has been such gloomy weather this last few days, so I am glad to see the sunshine again today. Mary Timrus has decided to stay with us until the next New Moon, so that she can visit some friends and relatives in these parts, before she makes the long journey home to the North. She wants to help to fix up my wagon and, as she is a very good seamstress, she has offered to make me curtains and cushions as her gift to me. Enjoying Mary's company, we travelled together with the Wagon Witch today to visit a Gnome friend of hers. He lives in a vegetable patch and grows fine crops. Mary and I rode in the trug on our way to and from the garden, which was a lot of fun. We helped out, doing some weeding between the rows of leeks and onions. Mouse Tales continued... And so, as if by magic⭐ a new home had been presented to me. My very own wagon, with plenty of room for my special things. Yet I was a little concerned... "but, if Seddie wants it out of his way, where can I put it? I don't think it is fit for pulling anywhere just now" At this @thewagonwitch said "Don't worry Hazel, if it suits you, your wagon can park by mine, there's room enough for both of us, I can carry the wagon back with me, how would that be?" You cannot imagine how excited I was "oh yes, oh yes indeed, that would be most acceptable by me" I squeaked. "Well then, all is well" she smiled " You shall travel home with me" she continued "along with Mary Timrus, for she will need a place to stay before the party". I have retreated to the drawing room. . The wind outside has brought down tree branches in the village, and shredded the flowers in my herbaceous borders! We had a garden party to raise money for our church this afternoon, so we were all keeping our fingers crossed that the rain would hold off until the end- which it did! "You'll remember Seddie the squirrel, the carpenter from Overhill" he said, I nodded in agreement. "Well it was he that made this wagon, many Moons ago". I could see it had been of fine quality in its day. Oakan continued, "The thing is, the fellow who asked for it never returned, nor paid, so it was left unfinished". Such a shame, a waste of good workmanship I thought. A wry smile then appeared across Oakan's face. "Seddie told me that its really quite the burden to him now, taking up space. So he would like it to go to a good home, so to speak, he wants no payment for it". "Oh my, that is very generous of him" I said. Oakan scratched his chin, "Now then, The Wagon Witch and I were thinking. We know that you have long yearned for a place of your own, a place to return to after your travels". I gulped, it was true, a settled home was something I dreamed of. The Wagon Witch then spoke up, "Then how would it be if we all helped to fix up this old wagon, by way of a birth day gift, so that you may have a cosy home at last?". The other gatherers all cheered at this point "Oh yes" they cried, "that would be a most splendid gift indeed, from us all!". A tear of happiness fell from my eye, I was almost overwhelmed with joy. Another pretty house for you this evening, and this one has a lavender- lined path, and a beautiful porch! It’s been a lovely weekend- yesterday we went to @katiesgardenplants , which is always inspiring, and I finally managed to get the pots at the front of the house planted up, as well as finding a Geranium ‘Mavis Simpson’, which has got to be my favourite hardy geranium. 🌸 My son arrived home with (literally)sackfuls of laundry, and then disappeared to London for a couple of days (unmissable concerts, I believe)- at least we’ve had perfect drying weather for all that bed linen! The Tale continues... 'Twas the night of the Mouse Moon Fayre and all were gathered by the campfire as @thewagonwitch flew in to join us. We greeted her joyously, mice squeaked and faerie folk fluttered their wings. "Bright Blessings to you all my fine friends" she said as she took her place by the fire and began to hand out the delicious treats she had brought to share. We chatted excitedly and munched on gooseberry tarts whilst sipping sweet elderflower cordial. After a while the Wagon Witch tapped her wand upon a stone and spoke up "It is indeed a pleasure to meet with you all again, I look forward to hearing all your news. But first, I have a serious matter to discuss'. At this we fell silent and looked to her intently. "Alas, it has been brought to my attention that one of us has been keeping a secret, withholding information that should be shared with us all, by rites". We gasped in shock, for it is woodland lore that no secrets should be kept from the each other. "Who could it be? What could it be?" we wondered. "It is one amongst us" she said. The shock! The disbelief! The hawthorns are bursting with blossom this year, the pungent, heady aroma is filling the air and I love it! A true native of the British Isles, steeped in folklore, tradition and with a plethora of uses, both medicinal and culinary. Young leaves for salad, Blossom for syrups, liqueur and tea, Berry’s for wine, ketchup and fruit leather. Lowers blood pressure due to antioxidant flavonoids, Heart health, improves blood flow, protects blood vessels, Helps to manage and control high cholesterol levels Tis the tree where fairy’s can be found and where the wee folk would gather. Commonly know as ‘May’ due to this being the time where the blossoms are at their fullest. Country folk would gift their neighbours with garlands to celebrate the coming of spring, better weather, hope, wealth and prosperity. On the other hand, people of the medieval age believed the scent of the blossom was reminiscent of the great plague. This was later discovered to be due to compound trimethylamine that is present in hawthorn blossom and the decaying flesh of animals and humans - nice! In other news…we visited a local restaurant for lunch this afternoon with family style seating. You know- long farmhouse tables and benches where you never know who you’ll rub elbows with. When we walked in we noticed a large group of sud de la France Monsieur’s. One happened to be our elderly neighbor who lives on our right. We shake hands and I wish him a happy New Year. “Blah blah hum de dah da…,” I can never understand his French country twang so when Justin responded, “c'est la première fois que nous venons ici.” I was impressed. Oh dear - today I came in very bedraggled and feeling sorry for myself. Mum gave me my dinner and changed me in to my warm pjs then the rain decided to terrify me by hammering down on the stable roof. I decided it was a terrifying monster trying to break in to my bedroom and called out for my very small friend who had gone out to investigate. Fearing the worst I thought it best to do some bucking and then charging towards the stable door, mum thought I was going to try to jump over it and got a bit worried. Thankfully the rain monster then ran off and my very small friend returned unhurt. We had a kiss and then both settled down for our dinner. Mum gave me some treats and a relaxing scratch, maybe if rain monsters help the treats come out I could be open to them visiting more often. Actually, no I think I prefer to eat my dinner in peace. It was an eventful evening but now me and my very small friend are cosy and settling down to nibbling some hay for the night. So many things happened tonight....I’m finally getting over my funk in part from dire flower pricing at the market, and I’m planting and sowing away. A doe came up next to our house, and got nose to nose with our tomcat, Rick Flair. Ricky proceeded to jaunt down the hill away from said doe, but doe followed! 😳 They both ran off together down our road until we couldn’t see them anymore. I then went to feed the diva corgis and they proceeded to fight. DaisyMae gave me a nasty bite on my right hand 😔. If y’all have advice over crazy female dogs, please fill me in! Then I go to close my chicken coops and the puppies were gone! Dylan took the front, I took the back and crop side-nothing!
