Members of the Northwest Michigan Community Development Coalition spent some time in Lansing this week for the inaugural Coalition Advocacy Day, meeting with leadership in the Michigan House and Senate, our Northern Michigan legislators, and directors of the State Budget office, Michigan State Housing Development Authority, and the Governor’s policy office. Together, they advocated for funding for the Office of Rural Prosperity, recommended funding and policy reforms to make it easier for communities like ours to build affordable housing, and requested full funding for grants through the Michigan Arts and Culture Council for our region’s arts organizations in addition to raising awareness about the challenges our region’s farmers are facing from imports, the climate crisis, and higher operating costs. Herbert Henry Asquith - 1852-1928 HHA- was the son of a Yorkshire clothing manufacturer. Educated at city of London school and Balliol college at Oxford. 1886- Elected as an MP for east Fife (Scotland). 1905: Asquith became the chancellor of the exchequer under Campbell Bannerman’s administration. 1908: He became Prime minister (liberal) following Bannerman’s resignation. As PM Herbert Asquith’s government would oversee the issues of Irish home rule/ women’s suffrage/ and Britain’s entry into WWI. His government would be ridiculed due to the munitions shortage of 1915, as well as the disaster that was the Gallipoli campaign in the same year. And it was on this day in history that Asquith invited the conservatives to form a coalition government. Herbert Henry Asquith resigned in December 1916, he would remain leader of the liberal party but would never govern again. He died of a stroke in 1928, and was buried in All saints church- Sutton Courtenay in Berkshire. His memorial in Westminster abbey is from 1934. Interesting fact: Following Campbell Bannerman’s resignation- Asquith made the journey to Biarritz (France) where king Edward VII was on holiday. It was here that he made the official ‘hand kissing’ with the monarch (which showed their loyalty to the sovereign and the crown.) A couple of months ago, the day before the election in the Netherlands, I had this very weird interaction with someone on the street that for very little reason started to scream at me and my group of students during a workshop session in an exhibition. This person left the exhibition screaming in dutch with the place's host, saw us and decided that we were a good audience. My Dutch colleagues ignored and moved on but I could not move. Thank you to VOA Alaska's Anchorage Adolescent Substance Misuse Prevention Coalition and community members who took time out of their weekend to help clean up our community! The coalition met on Saturday morning at Valley of the Moon Park, where they spread out and quickly got to work! Together, they filled six bags, and larger items were also found. Additionally, the coalition paid close attention to how many substance-use-related products they found in what was collected. For the coalition, it is essential to know how and what type of usage is occurring in Anchorage, especially in high-traffic areas where there are adults and youth. Special thanks to VOA's Day Treatment program, who put together our large cigarette disposal box! It was a great morning spent cleaning up our community!
