Earlier this month, I joined Steve Curwood @livingonearthradio to keynote the @ecologybasedeconomy Vision2030: Connect Catalyze Create Climate Convergence in Norway, Maine. Trying to bring together lessons from my own polar fieldwork, negotiations and panels from assemblies like the UN and World Economic Forum, as well as community leadership was quite the [fun] challenge. This is my second time at the Convergence, last being with Bill McKibben a few years back. Both times, the strength of community, the resilience, and the intergenerational power have been overwhelming. I enjoyed reconnecting with @mycj_coalition, wonderful music by @bandwich and @sagittariusrisingmusic serenading the sunset, and having some tough conversations. Concerned about Old Growth forests on BC day of action for Old Growth. The utter lack of action by David Eby, the coronated Premiere of BC, is a major disappointment!! He promised that he would take immediate action to defer logging by Teal Cedar, in Ada’itsx aka Fairy Creek. Recent piece in The Narwhal describes what is actually going on. By Ainslie Cruickshank Sept. 11, 2023 Three years after the B.C. government released a landmark independent review, which called for an overhaul in the way it manages forests, conservation groups say logging continues to threaten diverse, old-growth ecosystems across the province. The old-growth strategic review warned “the priorities that currently drive our forest management system are backwards.” The focus should be ecosystem health, not timber, it said. The expert panel behind the review urged a “paradigm shift,” offering 14 recommendations to improve forest management in B.C. The NDP government promised to implement them all. So far, none have been fully achieved. The province has deferred logging in some old-growth forests, initiated a new forest landscape planning process with greater First Nations and community involvement and started work on a new biodiversity and ecosystem health framework. We gathered in solidarity with #wetsuweten Peoples on #KillTheDrill Day of action, Saturday Nov. 5th, as the Coastal Gaslink pipeline begins its destructive drilling under the sacred Wedzin’kwa. This is the pristine river that has been sustaining the Wet’suwet’en peoples since time immemorial. The Salmon were running, as they used explosives to destroy the Lamprey creek, where endangered Lamprey eels lived in the estuary. It’s now, completely gone, forevermore! The destruction is irreversible. Life support systems and biodiversity is being lost, never to be recouped. The water, Air and lands need everyone’s protection! We must think of what we are leaving for the next seven generations. RBC is one of the world’s top 5 fossil fuel investors. Financing the CGL pipeline with Your money! About a dozen of us Greens in Pittsburgh took a trip to Harrisburg last weekend for a multiday series of education/rallying/marching/lobbying/civil disobedience centered around the ongoing climate crisis we face & the failure of our corrupt government to respond. People from around Pennsylvania (& out-of-state) came together for this. We got to meet so many new friends, even some old ones we’ve only known through Zoom or social media. It was an empowering experience and I’m also really grateful for the time I got to spend with friends at our lodge (ping pong, movie night, four square, deep late night conversations about evolutionary history & Indian cuisine). The fires in Kamloops, an unprecedented heat wave resulting in hundreds of spontaneous deaths, a global pandemic that continues to disrupt the whole world, and the entire town of Lytton burning to the ground, is what climate change looks like. Climate Scientists have been telling us to prepare ourselves for severe climate disruptions for 25 years. Since 2000, their warnings have been growing in intensity. In the last 5 years, I have heard them truly panic. Indigenous peoples were first to sound the alarm but colonial rule has made us incapable of hearing. The world's most marginalized, the poor, Blacks, people of colour, and the disenfranchised, have borne the brunt of the suffering and chaos, but the media, our governments, and even ourselves, we have ignored it. It is not too late to help: * support all Truth and Reconciliation efforts and in particular, stand with all who are calling for #LandBack. * join an environmental organization near you and work alongside them. Better yet, join 3. * go to the bank tomorrow and demand all of your investments be withdrawn from fossil fuel projects, demand the same of your union, and your pension plan. * talk about this at every opportunity. A group of dedicated warriors have delayed the TMX Bitumen pipeline work here, at the Brunette River. Huge old growth Cottonwoods are still alive! The River with it’s salmon and Nooksack Dase (both endangered) have another year or two of freedom from the corporate Greed of Big Oil! The 6 week window that would have allowed TMX to destroy this beautiful area has closed!! 🐟🌳This Brunette River Conservation area was instigated by local government and the communities. The community stood behind us and the tree sitters were brave and uncomfortable but never complained! 😊🌳 6 Weeks of Resistance has paid off! Our future will be Greener and Oil will not spill here. Further surveillance and Adopt a Pipeline program will go into effect soon as we move forward to keep TMX out! We need people in this area who want to walk a portion of the the 5 km’s through their neighbourhoods to keep an eye on activity. The Brunette River is in the pathway of the TMX Pipeline. Huge, old, Cottonwood trees are scheduled to be cut down along this beautiful, corridor to bring 890,000 barrels of highly toxic Dilbit (diluted Bitumen) from the Alberta Tar Sands through the TMX Bitumen Pipeline, to Burnaby mountain’s Westridge Terminal. A 700 percent increase in Tanker Traffic would follow. We Won’t Allow This To Happen! ✨💧💙 15 years ago, a Salmon enhancement program brought back Wild Salmon to this river. Standing up to keep this from happening is the right thing to do! Starting on August 4th, Protection Actions begin and if successful, the window of allotted time for tree cutting will come to a screeching halt.
