I feel so blessed to know women in the chronic illness world that help lift eachother up and support each-other. Today going into group I was feeling very down and not like myself but after an hour with the ILD ladies I feel like I’m revitalized a bit. My cup feels fuller listening to others share their stories. One of the topics that came up was not feeling enough for our kids. I think about my own daughter and for the last three years mommy has been sick and I have a lot of guilt not feeling like I’m enough. But one lady reminded us that our kids are watching us fight through this disease and we will inspire them to be better and persevere through the hard times in life - and that really changed my perspective. Yes mommy is sick, and mommy can’t do a lot of the things that other mommy’s do, but I’m doing my best. My daughter watches me get up everyday and make the most with what I have. And I hope she carries this type of strength with her throughout her own life. Here’s to knowing that we are enough, because we are showing up and doing the best with what we’ve got. 🫁 ❤️ #interstiallungdisease #pulmonaryfibrosis #ildwarrior #ildandme #chronicillnesscrew #ildawareness #youngwildandild #interstitiallungdisease #pulmonaryfibrosis #pulmonaryfibrosisawareness #ildandme #lungdiseaseawareness #autoimmunewarrior #autoimmuneawareness #hispanicautoimmunemoms #momwithpulmonaryfibrosis #youngwithild #pulmonaryfibrosiswareness

Reminiscing on pre-diagnosis days today. One of the last “healthy” mommy and me photos we had together in Winthrop summer of 2020. I do remember we had to walk up a big flight of stairs and I started to panic not being able to breathe, that’s when I knew something was really wrong. It would take 6 more months to officially get diagnosed. I find myself listening to this Shakira song on repeat a lot now, it is about facing problems and fighting for what’s important to you, even when life takes a drastic turn. “…aunque la vida me tratara así Voy a ser fuerte solo para ti Lo único que quiero es tu felicidad Y estar contigo…. Quererte sirve de anestesia al dolor Hace que me sienta mejor” I think a lot of us have something we continue to fight for, whether it be a spouse, our children, our pets, our family or even just for ourselves. Keep it up! Even on the hard days push through. ❤️ 🫁 #chronicillnessawareness #chronicillnesscrew #ildawareness #youngwildandild #interstitiallungdisease #pulmonaryfibrosis #pulmonaryfibrosisawareness #ildandme #lungdiseaseawareness #autoimmunewarrior #autoimmuneawareness #hispanicautoimmunemoms

I was or I guess am a Registered Nurse. This was always what I wanted to do with my life. I guess I felt like it’s what I was meant to do. And I LOVED it. And I think I was good at it. August 30, 2019 was my last day of work before my illness journey started. I then over the next two years had 6 surgeries, did SO much physio that I could do neck retractions in my sleep (my Chiari gang knows 😂) and I basically reconditioned myself first. Then the following fall I started a physical rehab program and the goal was to return to my full time oncology RN job. We quickly learned there was no way with my symptoms I could do full time, and even part time was gruelling. I remember standing at the med cart sweat running down my face and my knees were shaking because I was so exhausted just from the stagnant standing. I tried SO HARD. I kept pushing through the physical limitations but ultimately it was my mental health that couldn’t handle it. When I was in the hospital I had several (at least 4) lumbar drains and numerous failed epidural attempts that left me with some trauma 😅😅. Morally it was hard for me to go to work and be telling people everything would be okay, when I was such a mess myself from what I had been through. I decided to leave nursing. I lost my whole identity and felt mostly angry and it had been ripped away from me and even though I did EVERYTHING I was supposed to, it still didn’t work out. But like we are not our disability. I am not my job. I’m Katie. I’m pretty cool. I’m loving, sarcastic, blunt, funny, smart, and honestly those things don’t sound to bad. 🥰 So I got this tattoo to remind me that shit happens, but I’m stronger 💪. “Just like the lotus, we too have the ability to rise from the mud, bloom out of the darkness, and radiate into the world.” – Unknown. #raredisease #rarediseasemonth #chronicillness #chronicillnessawareness #chronicillnesssupport #chronicillnesscrew #registerednurses #disabled #disabilityawareness #mentalhealthawareness #healthcarementalhealth #tattoo

When you feel alone, remember there is someone out there feeling those same feelings, and you might be lucky enough to call that person a friend. For the longest time after getting my diagnosis it was very lonely. I didn’t know anyone like myself experiencing Pulmonary Fibrosis/Interstitial lung disease - let alone a chronic autoimmune disease. I have been so grateful to find a small community of women who support eachother and lift each-other up. We all know how awful these chronic diseases are and through caring and understanding, we help ease a little of the weight off each-other. I had an experience today that made me question some people’s intentions with support groups but it reminded me to continue to reach out to those like me, to be kind, helpful and supportive. Happy Sunday to all my chronic crew. 💕 #chronicillnessawareness #chronicillnesscrew #ildawareness #youngwildandild #interstitiallungdisease #pulmonaryfibrosis #pulmonaryfibrosisawareness #ildandme #lungdiseaseawareness #autoimmunewarrior #autoimmuneawareness

So I’m gonna keep this short .. 2019-2022 was hectic for me . I’ve experienced betrayal and lost people I thought were solid . Then I lost my gramps . And other things I won’t mention on here .I had to go off the grid a little and experience what’s it’s like to fend for myself . And also be ok with being alone with that. I had no choice … But dancing was there for me so put my all into that and learned new trades along the way . I learned I had a strong will and determination that cant be broken …So as always … Trust the process 🌊. I had fun at redbull filled with good laughs and made cool new connections . Kindness costs $0 but means everything Over the years of meeting people with chronic illnesses, disabilities, neuro divergencies and mental health conditions and their loved ones the one thing that has passed every single persons lips when asked what they wish for in the world was kindness and empathy, kindness in the medical system, kindness in society, kindness from family and friends and kindness from strangers. 🌏✨ We don’t have to understand what someone’s going through to be kind 🤍🥰

Our Stories, Our Future - The National Youth Disability Summit 2022 Summit Countdown Has Begun! Only one day until the national youth disability summit commences and I could not be more excited for this week. I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of the Co Design Team planning the event over the past 6 months. 🥰 The Summit will be held from Tuesday 5 - Thursday 7 July 2022. Participation is free for all young people with chronic illness / disability (both diagnosed and undiagnosed), aged between 12 - 30 years. Thursday is also an open day free to anyone who wants to attend. And is an opportunity for both young people and key changemakers to not only come together and connect but discuss and hear about the topics that matter to us most. ☺️ Come along and gain new skills from key leaders, advocates and everyday people living with disbaility on navigating everything from education, to advocacy, the medical system, diagnosis and the emotional fatigue of disbaility. Created with energy levels and accessibility needs in mind you are welcome to join us for as many or as few sessions as you choose. Unlike the outside world the summit has been created so no one feels left out. 💛✨ I’m really grateful to be speaking this Thursday alongside some incredible young people, as a part of an interactive workshop on the late diagnosis of disability. As well as a panel on facilitating and developing a co designed live experience event. Swipe to see session times >> To register head to @cydaaus or https://www.cyda-nyds.com #nyds2022

Have you ever thought, the things you believe mean “something is wrong with me”, are actually proof that something is right with you? Your introverted nature, sensitivity to alcohol or fast food, your need for a full night of sleep, or your exhaustion after staying out till midnight. Your extra emotional self, or inability to always “bounce back”. Your sensitive stomach, your need for more rest, or your intolerance to chemicals, toxins, or perfumes. What if these things that we often beat ourselves up over are actually qualities that mean our body is working the way it is *supposed* to. That something is in fact not wrong with us, but right with us? Because it is. If you’re anything like me, maybe you’ve always hated how “sensitive” your body is. Wondering why you can’t just “bounce back” or push through like other people, and I’m here to tell you you’re NOT meant to always bounce back and push through. The less aware we are of our bodies usually increases our ability to push through its cues to slow down. It took me a long time to realize this, and I’m still having to remind myself this daily. Our “sensitivities” are, more often than not, a natural and healthy response from our body to let us know what it needs. And, our ability to sense these things is actually a sign of our self awareness. An upset stomach, a wave of exhaustion, a headache, or a gut feeling are ways that our body will appropriately tell us “NOPE, this isn’t for us.” So don’t get down on yourself for your bodies sensitive nature, and instead see what you notice if you start to just listen ❤️

Life is hard for an able bodied person at the moment. We're creeping out of 2 years of a pandemic and tiptoeing the edge of a world war. Everything is getting more expensive. People's ability to spend is decreasing. This stress is overwhelming, then factor in that stress exacerbates chronic illness symptoms, life can feel pretty crap. Do what you need to lift the weight of the world. Turn off the news. Lose yourself in a book. Dance to some music. Cuddle with loved ones. Find the bits of joy in the world where you can, block out the negative for the sake of your health. @emilycoxhead @thehappynewspaper , @sugarandsloth , @worthfeed are all great sources of feel good news. ✨Introduction✨ Hi, I’m @_chronically_lauren_ and LittleCoffeeCrafts is my passion project. I got diagnosed with my first chronic illness in 2013 and haven’t been able to stop collecting them ever since 🙈 Whilst recovering from major knee surgery in 2020, I started crafting as a way to take my mind off the pain and a way to feel productive again. Since then Crafting has become my passion and I spend every good moment I have sat in my craft room, coffee in hand, coming up with designs and making them into a reality. My aim is to spread awareness of chronic illness through humour (and extremely cozy jumpers and t-shirts) and to empower other chronically ill people the same way this community empowered me 💕 #chronicillness #chronicpain #chronicfatigue #chronicallyill #chronicillnesscrew #chronicillnesscreator #chronicallyillcreator #chronicallyillcreators #handmade #handmadeuk #handmadewithlove #littlecoffeecrafts

When we’re young, our ability to discern what’s right from wrong, true vs false, good vs evil is not fully developed yet. Similarly, our ability to soundly communicate our needs and boundaries is still in the works. For many, their boundaries were violated from a young age. Their No was never listened to or taken seriously. And their unmet needs we’re mistaken for “behavioral issues” and met with discipline. Sometimes, when our growing systems get so tired of not being seen, heard or understood, it resorts to other measures in hopes of getting those needs met. When we’re children, and get sick or injured, more often then not, we get attention, we get tended to. So it would make beautiful sense for our system to learn “sick = being cared for” or “pain = listening to me” So, you can guess that down the road our bodies may hold onto pain or illness as a means to get what it so desperately desires: to be seen, heard and held. The chronic, unexplainable, unsolvable pain and illness that are not a direct result of a genetic disorder. In these cases, the body finds its way to communicate with us and the outside world to get what it needs. So the exploration here is to consider the pain and ailment you have been struggling with presently and reflect on your earliest memory of feeling pain, feeling sick, or injured and think back to the responses you received. Tender love/care? Quality time? Being asked what you need/how you feel? Or perhaps, the opposite? To tough it out? To dust it off? No matter the case, if the body was yearning for connection in anyway it would learn one of two things in these scenarios: “Ill only receive connection/being listened to when I’m ill or in pain” OR “Nobody cares if I’m I’ll or in pain” Both narratives could still potentially lead to chronic dis-ease. And neither scenario had to have happened all the time or at a great level (ex: “a seemingly normal childhood”) One case, holding on as the bodies only way of survival. And in another, raging a war within the body because it’s never been accepted or tended to. Sometimes a combo of both. Pain = pay attention to me When was the first time you ever feeling sick or in pain?

I think everyone can relate to this feeling. Can I get a 🙌? Sometimes we feel like: • we SHOULD be able to get more done in a day • we SHOULD be able to do a certain job • SHOULD be able to go to certain places But we can't, or feel like we can't. But maybe it's not about the thing we are trying to do, but how we are trying to do it. ✅ Instead of trying to do all of the laundry, try and get 1 load done ✅ Instead of cleaning the whole house, try and vacuum, or just do the dishes ✅ Instead of doing a full 60min workout, take 10-15min to move ✅ Instead of committing to an hour long dinner party, agree to drop by for dessert/coffee near the end to say hi 👋 Any task can suddenly become manageable if we break it down small enough (including your workouts) 😉

What would you say to your ‘first-diagnosed’ self, or someone else who has just been diagnosed with a chronic illness? To anyone that has just been diagnosed, I would say: Create a routine - it may be as small as getting up and brushing your teeth, having a shower and making herbal tea. Any routine to anchor to might make a massive difference when you feel like everything else within you and around you is falling apart. Listen to everyone but follow what you think is best for you. Follow your gut. There will be a lot of unsolicited advice, concern and suggestions from well-wishers. Follow your heart, you know your body best. None of them have walked in your shoes. Back yourself up and do what feels right to you. Fight for a treatment plan that serves you and makes you feel looked after. You are NOT just a number or a statistic in the health system. If a diagnosis doesn't feel right, it probably isn’t. Get educated on your condition so you can challenge the status quo and facilitate the best outcomes for yourself. Please be kind to yourself. Sometimes it’s hard to look at the person in the mirror and recognise that image as “you”. In these moments, please try to be kind to yourself and give yourself time, space and love to heal. 5 things about me, just because: 1. I suck at #twotruthsandalie. I always forget to tell the lie. 2. I once peed next to @kristenanniebell in a public bathroom and then we washed our hands side-by-side. She was so nice when I told her I’m a huge #veronicamars fan. 3. I spent the day on the couch after another #lowbloodpressure episode this morning. It was 82/47 - a record (documented) low. I have specialist appointments lined up next week. 4. I really hate my couch. Maybe I’ll be on the lookout for a replacement. 5. I hate Swedish fish and like black licorice. Tell me something random about you! 👍👍 👍👍 👍👍 #gettoknowme #tellmeaboutyou #blacklicorice #swedishfish #satinpillowcase #nospoonsday #nospoons #nospoonsleft #nospoonstogive #nospoonstoday #nospoonshere #nospoonslefttoday #mysteryillness #nobones #chronicillnesscommunity #chronicillness #chronicillnessblogger #chronicillnesscrew #chronicillnessstruggles #chronicillnesslife #chronicillnessproblems #writersofinstagram #poshbabe #resellercommunity

Day 4 of the 8 pillars of wellness series has us taking a closer look at stress and anxiety. First off, the difference between stress and anxiety is this: stress is added pressure over something that is currently going on in your life emotionally or physically. Anxiety is the “what if” monster. It is the worry created over something that has yet to happen. Let’s talk strategy: For Stress Practice Vagal activation (we will cover the Vagus nerve extensively in week 4). This may be done through breathing exercises, splashing ice water on your face and the back of your neck, or even gargling water in the mornings. Journaling is another great way to control stress, as it allows you to get your thoughts out onto paper. It doesn’t even need to be coherent. I have found some of my most stress relieving journaling comes from stream of consciousness journaling, or writing the first things that come to mind. For Anxiety: The BIGGEST impact you can make on anxiety is to control the controllables. You do this by writing out whatever you are worried about, then write out what you can do about it right then and there. Make a list. Then write out the things that are out of your control at that moment and disassociate yourself from those since you literally have zero control over that aspect. Also for anxiety, we can revisit the breathwork from earlier. Breathe in for 8 seconds, hold for 6, breathe out for 8 seconds, and hold again for 6. In doing this, you again activate that vagus nerve, allowing your heart rate to decrease and your blood flow begin to regulate.
