“Remembrance” By Major Alf Cough 2/4 Machine Gun Battalion 8th Australian Division AIF We were gathered in Nature’s chapel Above us, a dome of sky blue Neath the whispering palms in the valley With the afternoon sun streaming through, There we remember them. The altar was only a table, No organ assisted the choir; With a rough wooden cross, we were able To, in memory, fulfilling our desire To remember them. With bared heads we listen in silence While the padre calls the roll, Bit no clear ringing voices answers “Present” - Just names on a parchment scroll. We will remember them. As the notes of “Last Post” are ringing, At attention our tribute we pay, And the choir replies, softly singing, Rest in Peace - for our comrades we pray - Pray we remember them. But ever in memory they are present. In spirit they still march along, And join with us still in our singing As of your - our old marching song - So we remember them. Today was the birth of a service Of Honour, Devotion and Love, Which will keep evergreen, loyal memories Of comrades who were transferred above We will remember them. This poem was written for the first parade of the 2/4th in March of 1942 at Changi. #changichapelmuseum #fepow #cofepow #secondworldwar #remembrance #christianity #faith #changi #singaporehistory #singaporephotography #bnwphotography #bnw_greatshots #moving #2/4th #aif #monochrome #blackwhitephotography #landmarkphotography #photography #bnwphoto #bnw_captures #chapel #preservinghistory #connorrathbonephotography

A very humbling and enriching excursion to Changi Chapel & Museum, where we learn more about the POWs during the Second World War. We were fortunate to be able to engage their free robot guide, Temi which made our tour more interactive. To all the soldiers who died in service, thank you for putting up a strong fight to protect our land, may your souls rest in eternal peace. #changichapelmuseum #changichapel #temirobot

Day 286 - 290 - 9 to 13 Apr - admin, errands and catching up with friends. We spent the last few days catching up on sleep (dealing with jetlag) and meeting family and friends. Notably, we headed to Maxwell and found a wonderful #samsui woman mural while running an errand (Rajie's). We also got together as a family for Mum's birthday and caught up with some new friends. They suggested that we could visit the #changichapelmuseum and then have a drink and dinner at @barkcafe next door. We thoroughly enjoyed the museum, which taught us so much about how WW2 impacted Singapore. We were unaware about the number of POWs and the conditions they had to endure for as long as they had to. It was an eye-opening experience indeed. Bark Cafe was an amazing outdoor space with a wonderful vibe and amazing views. We had an incredible time with our friends. Thank you, @happijoni, for making our day so enjoyable and for shuttling us about! We look forward to next time!

As we flew into Changi Airport in Singapore I began thinking about the Changi quilt and other embroidered textiles that I had read about. A little investigation and I found that there was a museum dedicated to the memory of all those who had been interned at Changi prison when Singapore fell to the Japanese. My own father had been a POW in Burma and started his own internment in this prison before being put to work on the Burma/death railway as it was known so it felt important to make the trip and pay my respects. The humid heat here is intense and it is sobering to think that the runway we landed on had been built by men on starvation rations under constant threat of brutal punishment if they failed to keep up. There was a replica of the Changi quilt, the original resides in the British Red Cross archive. Each 6 inch square was designed and embroidered by the women prisoners who included symbols that their husbands might recognise to convey information that might be a comfort to their husbands held in a separate camp. When it was finished it was used in the men's camp . The residence that the prisoners showed transcended their conditions. Those prisoners who had been artists, engineers and musicians used their skills to make life better for everyone else. Infact it highlighted the importance of the arts in general for keeping up moral and mental well being in the face of appalling conditions in the camp. #changichapelmuseum #changiprisonmuseum

Day 10 in Singapore and everyone was feeling confident to explore on their own; really building those skills in independence, resilience and confidence. Lots of students chose to explore the beautiful @singapore_botanic_gardens 🌺some headed back to @mandaiwildlifereserve and the Birds of Paradise Park, whilst others opted for shopping in Chinatown, Little India, Arab Street and Orchard Road 🛍️ Staff had a somber day at @changichapelmuseum learning about the history of Changi as a prisoner of war camp during WW2. The night ended with a 200m trip skyward to @marinabaysands taking in the breathtaking views 🌃 (Sunday 31 March) 🇸🇬 @blue.stamp.travel #BeLong #Singapore #LongRoadLife #SingaporeTrip #TuringTrip #MarinaBaySands #changichapelmuseum #singaporebotanicgardens

We had a great World War 2 tour on Saturday, exploring the East Coast of Singapore including the @ChangiChapelMuseum. The Museum is looking particularly beautiful at the moment, because of the Dancing Poppies art installation by @Florence_glassart. Everyone stayed for a drink and lunch after the tour - yet another way for our members (and guests) to meet other people through @anzasingapore. What other weekend tours would you like us to offer? In this tour, to the Eastern side of the island, we will follow the historical events which lead to the fall of Singapore into the hands of the Japanese during WWII. Many prisoners of war and civilian internees were imprisoned in Changi Prison, which at one point held over 10,000 prisoners. Our visit to the Changi Chapel and Museum, which replaced the old prison, will give us a chance to learn about the hardship of the prisoners and how they managed to keep up their spirits in order to survive. We will see artifacts, murals and hear personal stories. After a short break we will drive to see the replicas of the Monster Gun at the Johor Battery before we head towards our last stop, the Changi Beach Massacre site where the ethnic cleansing known as Sook Ching took place. Have you heard of Nona Baker? From Dunstable, UK, she was the sole Caucasian woman recorded to have survived the Japanese Occupation by hiding and subsisting in the Malayan jungle. By the time Singapore fell, most of the British and Allied civilians had vacated. And as a writer once said, they “had done so, very conspicuously, at the expense of the local non-white population.” Nona and her brother, Vin - the GM of a tin mine - were exceptions. They remained behind, refusing to leave their workers at Sungei Lembing in Pahang on the Malay Peninsula. Thereon, she endured three years of hardship. All the while, living with the fear of betrayal. Her memoir - ‘Pai Naa’ is a striking account of an extraordinary feat by this truly remarkable woman. Well worth a read. >>>>> Double tap if you like this post. Ever wondered how they designated the iconic Japanese Zero fighter plane the ‘Zero’? I found this news article from the 18 Dec 1941 edition of The Singapore Free Press and Mercantile Advertiser (1884-1942) relating to it. Not fogetting that they printed it ten days after the Japanese landed in British Malaya and bombed Singapore. It had to do with the Japanese Imperial Year Kōki 2600 (1940). Read on…….. This WW2 Changi POW camp episode opened with the escape and re-capture on 30 August 1942 of four men: Australians Corporal Rodney Breavington and Private Victor Gale, and Britishers, Privates Eric Fletcher and Harold Waters. It kicked off what became notorious as ‘Selarang Barracks Incident,’ where the Japanese captors subjected the entire camp’s POWs to the most inhuman and punishing extremes over four days. On 27 April 1946, the prime war criminal, Lt Gen Fukuei (aka Fukuye) Shimpei, was similarly moved onward by firing squad at the very spot where the Allied POWs were executed, over three years earlier. We honour the four Allied men in perpetuity at the Kranji War Memorial, Singapore. In October 1943, as part of Operation Jaywick, an Allied taskforce snuck into Singapore harbour and detonated six Japanese ships. The attack caused an uproar within the Japanese Military administration. #OnThisDay October 10, the Japanese military gathered the interned civilians in the courtyard of Changi Gaol and searched their rooms: they believed someone had leaked insider information to the Allies. In the months that followed, internees were expelled from Changi and subjected to torture as part of the retaliation known as the Double Tenth Incident. 14 men were eventually killed as a result of being crammed into small prison cells with little access to food or water. Throughout the ordeal, the internees supported one another to persevere. The ‘questioning’ stopped in April 1944 and survivors were brought back to Changi Gaol. War crimes trials were initiated soon after the war's conclusion to file accusations against Axis soldiers and leaders. Between October 1945 and April 1951, trials for Japanese war crimes were held in various countries. In several of these hearings, particularly those involving the treatment of prisoners of war, former internees took center stage. Some of these trials relied heavily on their affidavits, and additional evidence against the accused were also gathered from witnesses. The shortage of water and food was a major concern during the Syonan-to era, and the scarcity was felt even through the walls of Changi Prison. In this sketch by a Prisoner of War, WRM Haxworth, he highlighted one of the mysterious happenings in the camp involving the water supply: “It was notified on Monday 27th July 1942 must be every care taken to reduce the consumption of water. On Tuesday 28th July 1942 the garden hose was seen to have burst in many places – but who cared!” What do you think happened to the hose? #ww2 #changichapelmuseum #singaporehistory

The Japanese Occupation in Southeast Asia saw to resources being siphoned from occupied territories to aid and sustain the soldiers at battle. However, scarcity elicited ingenuity amongst the locals – including the POWs in Changi Camp. Unconventional materials were improvised into cooking ingredients and source of nutrients to manage the shortages such as utilising palm oil. Learn more about palm oil-related recipes and find out what the POWs used the palm oil for. 1. With food scarcity being the main factor in causing diseases associated with vitamin deficiency such as Beriberi (lack of vitamin B1) and scurvy (lack of vitamin C), the prisoners of war resorted to other alternatives. In one of William Haxworth’s sketches titled ‘Changi Comforts’, drawing of fruits such as bananas and papayas were labelled as vitamins which could be the natural source of nourishment during imprisonment. Sketches that captured papaya trees planted within the vicinity of Changi Prison were symbolic of the prisoners of war resilience to survive. Photo: 1. “In memory of Bill Murkin W.O. 135th Hertfordshire Yeomanry who died 31 Mar 1942. Favourite little brother to my grandmother Violet, husband to Bessie and father to Betty, Tony and Jennifer.” - Who was the Hertfordshire Yeomanry? The Hertfordshire Yeomanry unit was founded as far back as the 1790s– tasked with civil defence as a county-based Cavalry. It underwent various changes throughout the 19th Century, including being disbanded and re-raised twice before finding its first battle honour in the Boer War of 1899 - 1902. The 135th (East Anglian) (Hertfordshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery was later deployed to Singapore during World War 2. #ww2 #changichapelmuseum #singaporehistory #singaporeww2 #singaporechangi #changi #ww2pow #pow

This month we’re featuring wartime sketches by Mr William Haxworth– an internee formerly from the War Risks Insurance Department of the Singapore Treasury. These sketches captured the POWs’ ingenuity to survive in Changi Prison during the Japanese Occupation. His sketches which were covertly crafted with scrap materials became a window into the tragic reality of the POWs’ living conditions in these camps. Food shortages was a constant struggle, and through Haxworth’s sketches, we discovered how the POWs pre-war profession became key to their survival. Stay tuned to find out more! The next stop on our Jalan-Jalan Changi trail is Changi Airport! Changi Airport was initially an airbase built by prisoners of war during World War Two from 1943 to 1944. After the surrender of the Japanese, the Royal Air Force took over the airbase, and later served as the main runway for military aircraft until 1949. As space was limited to expand existing airports such as Paya Lebar Airport and Singapore’s civil airport, the Changi airbase was eventually converted to an airport with passenger terminals in the 1970s. Singapore Changi Airport became operational on 1 July 1981 and officially opened five months later, on 29 December. The luggage seen in the photo was made by Samsonite. Hard cases like these were common in the 1980s. - Journey through time with @natmuseum_sg travel-themed exhibition and discover Singapore’s transformation into a global hub. “Remembering how my grandfather who escaped the firing squad (Sook Ching) with wits end my father at 17 struggling to keep my family alive thru WWII. We are forever grateful for a faithful God.” _ Days after the fall of Singapore, the Japanese hojo kempei carried out operation Sook Ching– in the effort to purge suspected anti-Japanese elements within Singapore’s Chinese population. The operation lasted between 18 February and 4 March 1942. The method of execution involved rope bound victims walking towards the sea and shot down as they reached shallow waters. A few managed to survive either by swimming away or loosening their ropes whilst submerging underwater. Bodies of victims who did not survive, were buried in mass graves dug by work parties made up of prisoners of war from Changi prison. #ww2 #changichapelmuseum #singaporehistory #singaporeww2 #singaporechangi #changi #ww2pow #pow

After Singapore was surrendered to the Japanese, apart from military personnels, European civilians including women and children of all ages were sent to Changi Gaol. At the start of the internment in 1942, there were 359 women and 61 children. This number continued to rise throughout the occupation. By August 1945 , 2,200 men and approximately 2,800 civilians(women and children) were interned. Children under the age of 15 were usually interned with their mothers. However, Jimmy Cairns was taken care of by his father (both are highlighted in the photo) after his mother was killed during evacuation on a ship outbound from Singapore. Life would have been different for Jimmy had his father not been around during the most tumultuous time in history. On this Father’s Day, what are some of the things you are grateful for about a father figure in your life? After World War Two ended, Changi Village resumed operation as an off-base suburbia for British troops stationed at Changi. The community in Changi had been a multicultural one. In the 1960s, the community played a major role in being part of the retail establishment in Changi Village. It became a convenient spot marketplace for the British military, and products were sold at a very affordable price. Changi soon became a well-known spot amongst bargain hunters. “Remembering Ted Bedworth, who was captured in Singapore and died in Thailand. And his wife Jenny. Not forgotten. A moving place.” – Who were the Cambridgeshire Regiment? The regiment was part of the rifle volunteer corps, formed in Cambridgeshire and the Isle of Ely, during 1859 to 1860. During World War 2, the regiment expanded to form two battalions and eventually sent to Singapore. The 1st Battalion fought at Sime Road Camp, whereas the 2nd Battalion tried to hold the lines at Braddell Road. Many of these men ended up in captivity in Changi as prisoners of war. #ww2 #changichapelmuseum #singaporehistory #singaporeww2 #singaporechangi #changi #changipow

In war, geographic advantage is key! In the lead-up to World War 2, Singapore was touted as the “Gibraltar of the East”, and Changi was specifically considered imperative to the British’s defence. Changi’s proximity to the Straits of Johor made it a strategic location despite its location at the eastern end of Singapore. A significant amount of effort went towards transforming Changi into a modern coastal artillery base with military living quarters. Despite the British’s confidence in their efforts, Singapore was surrendered to the Japanese in less than 15 days after the island came under attack. Changi then became the site of one of the most infamous internment camps in the region. #ww2 #changichapelmuseum #singaporehistory #singaporeww2 #singaporechangi #changi #changipow
