This month, we're kicking off with a visit to Tanjong Pagar Plaza Market and Food Centre. Our adventure begins with a shoulder or foot massage by the team at Blind Massage Services. We had a great World War 2 tour on Saturday, exploring the East Coast of Singapore including the @ChangiChapelMuseum. The Museum is looking particularly beautiful at the moment, because of the Dancing Poppies art installation by @Florence_glassart. Last weekend the New Zealand Chamber in Singapore hosted Waitangi Day Family Celebrations at Australian International School (AIS) Junior Campus. There was face-painting, a bouncy castle, arts and crafts, games, a sausage sizzle 🌭, great Kiwi music, drinks and pies! One of our highlights however, was the ANZA Booth where ANZA office members set up shop to chat to the crowds about our community and what we offer. In this tour, to the Eastern side of the island, we will follow the historical events which lead to the fall of Singapore into the hands of the Japanese during WWII. Many prisoners of war and civilian internees were imprisoned in Changi Prison, which at one point held over 10,000 prisoners. Our visit to the Changi Chapel and Museum, which replaced the old prison, will give us a chance to learn about the hardship of the prisoners and how they managed to keep up their spirits in order to survive. We will see artifacts, murals and hear personal stories. After a short break we will drive to see the replicas of the Monster Gun at the Johor Battery before we head towards our last stop, the Changi Beach Massacre site where the ethnic cleansing known as Sook Ching took place. I started my tour at the Thian Hock Keng Temple built in 1838 in Telok Ayer before showing my visitors @yipyewchong 40 meters long mural which he painted on the back wall of the temple for the Hokkien Festival in April 2017. This was one of the artist’s first commissioned works before he painted the series “Dreams of Chinatown” as a full time artist between 2018-2023. Recently recognised in the inaugural edition of The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2023: come and join us on a heritage tour of Capella Singapore! Join us for this informative tour combining the unique street art of Singaporean artist Yip Yew Chong (@yipyewchong) and the history of Chinatown🎨 Our tour will begin with a visit to the Thian Hock Keng Temple. We will then follow the artist’s trail of murals spanning from 2016 until 2023, depicting customs and traditions as well as real people and family members (not to mention his cat). Our guide, Sarah Lev, will share with us the stories related to each mural. We will continue towards South Bridge Road to see more murals such as the Cantonese Opera and the Paper Mask Puppet Seller, before we continue through the narrow streets of Chinatown to see his Chinatown home mural and his recent Clog maker mural. Yip Yew Chong was born and raised in this neighbourhood and worked as an accountant for many years while pursuing his artistic career as a street artist in his free time. Thaipusam is one of the most interesting Hindu festivals! 😍 You will see how devotees enter a trance-like state and some have their bodies pierced by metal spikes. A colourful procession then takes place with participants carrying heavy, richly decorated 'kavadis' from a temple in Serangoon Road as they walk 4 km to another Hindu temple. Along the way, our guide, Charlotte, will explain about the legends and rituals of Thaipusam. You will have a chance to observe the procession and enjoy the atmosphere, music, chanting and clapping of the participants. At the temple, you will see how the devotees prepare for this significant walk. The bus will also take us to the end of the procession where you can witness the devotees taking out the spikes with nary a drop of blood. The tour will give you a unique opportunity to experience this fascinating festival! Date: Thursday 25th January 2024 Time : 4:00pm - 7.00pm Meet: 3.50pm - Newton Hawker Centre Cost: $50 ANZA Member, $60 Non-Member Additional Notes: Please dress modestly and put on comfortable footwear that is easy to slip on/off as they have to be removed at the entrances to the temples.
