.. went on a heritage walk at #kamponggelam & #masjidsultan to enrich myself of #sgheritage 👣😊 Kampong Gelam — a neighbourhood & ethnic enclave in the Malay-Muslim quarter of Singapore — was the home of Malay royalty for 180 years! It was a hub for thousands of Haj pilgrims from across the region setting out for Mecca each year. Prior to British colonisation, Kampong Gelam was home to the Malay aristocracy of Singapore. It became prominent & more populous after the signing of a treaty between the British East India Company, Sultan Hussein Shah of Johor and Temenggong Abdul Rahman in 1819. During the colony’s early history, Kampong Gelam was designated for the Sultan and his household, as well as the Malay & Arab communities, many of whom were merchants. The 2nd half of the 19th century saw the rapid growth of immigrant communities in Kampong Glam, initially from Sumatra, and later from other parts of Indonesia and Malaya. This resulted in the setting up of different kampongs, like Kampong Malacca, Kampong Java & Kampong Bugis. By the early 20th century, commercial activities in Kampong Gelam had expanded, and new shop-houses & residential buildings were built to accommodate more immigrant settlers. This also resulted in some of the Arab communities moving out to other areas like Joo Chiat, Tanglin & Bukit Tunggal (Dunearn), and similarly the Malay communities to Geylang Serai & Kampong Eunos. Once upon a time long long ago in Kampong Gelam was a ginormous banyan tree that housed a whole microsm of organisms, insects, invertebrate. One day quite recently without warning, rhyme or reason or storm, branches of the tree fell on 3 parked cars which National Parks hastily sawn the tree to a stump.But look closely!Can you spot wires as tentacles that spew mist and solar panels that provide energy. Here, artist Chok Si Xuan uses cybernetics and natural material and the ruins of the banyan tree as a metaphor of the lost community and ecology for behind this tree once also stood Rumah Jawi(a kind of Javanese clan association)which was demolished as it stood as an empty relic of the past. #ohopenhouse #kamponggelam

Had the pleasure to bring a professor from Nottingham to sample the Minangkabou food of Indonesia . Seen at 11 am is the signature beef rendang that has been stewed with spices for hours . Bringing a guest from England to my Kampong Gelam tour to view the lovely facade of 64-room Sultan Hotel built in 1920 as the Alhamdiah Press owned by Raja Haji Ali . Alhamdiah printed Jawi (Malay writing in Arabic script ) in the early 1920s and later in Rumi(romanised Malay)for religious, folklore, literature and lifestyle books and magazines. The Malay publishing and printing thrived here until taken over by bigger printers in Malaysia in the 70s. The building was conserved as a hotel which won the Urban Development Authority architectural award 2012. I had the good luck to stay there and was happy that the room I had was in parquet and not carpeted. Around here is a cacophony of new and old buildings ,restaurants enmeshed seamlessly. #heritage #kamponggelam

The mosque was built in 1824 for Sultan Hussein Shah, the first sultan of Singapore. Just had a fantastic tour of Kampong Gelam guided by Abang @khir19 he was the local kampong boy. Feom his stories (its very persinal) we know more about the neighbourhood of Kampong Gelam. One of the neighbour is the famous Singapore’s Murtabak row, located right opposite the majestic Sultan mosque at Arab Street. Theres two murtabak and biryani restaurants running side by side (at the corner of the Arab Street) that had been around since early 1900s. Zam Zam restaurant is existed since 1908 and Victory restaurant that had been around since 1910. They use to be partners My family (since my grandparents) always visit Victory for murtabak. It’s difficult to have a discussion about murtabak without hearing about these two legendary eateries. Both Zam Zam and Victory are fail-safe supper joints for murtabak and briyani. But Victory always be my family’s choice when we visit Singapore. Bang @khir19 had somekind of secret password, while ordering he said “make it osama” and wak Man (the senior kitchen crew) put extra egg and minced meat on the top of murtabak.
