My niece threw out there the idea to go and visit the Parliament : L'Assemblée Nationale. And why not ? It's a very interesting 45 to 1h visit, which is totally free and needs to be booked online as you enter in batches at fixed times. What surprised us all was the actual size of the chamber itself. On TV with the wide angle cameras you imagine it a lot bigger than it actually is. The historical building itself is beautiful and the audioguide full of useful information. A great visit to do in Paris. #touristathome #paris #assembléenationale #PalaisBourbon #familytime #historical_visit #parisdaytrip #france #discoveringfrance

The Didgori Battle Memorial The memorial is located about 40 kilometers west of Tbilisi, Georgia, on Mount Didgori. Built in the 1990s, the memorial commemorates the pivotal Battle of Didgori in 1121, where King David IV of Georgia, also known as David the Builder, led his forces to a significant victory over the Seljuk Turks. This victory was crucial in the establishment of Georgian national identity and the expansion of the Georgian kingdom. The memorial site includes a massive stone monument and sword sculptures symbolizing the battle, as well as other sculptural elements spread across the area. @fathercriz 🧟‍♂️

.. went on a heritage walk at #masjidhajjahfatimah to enrich myself of #sgheritage 👣😊 Masjid Hajjah Fatimah — the 2nd oldest in Singapore, and a rare example of one being named after a woman — was founded in 1846 by the named philanthropist. It is a landmark that represents the efforts contributed by the matriach & her descendants toward helping communities thrive from the growing nation. In its earliest form, the mosque was designed in a mix of Islamic & European architectural styles by a British architect. However, its main prayer hall was rebuilt in the 1930s, by French contractors. The rebuilding added more Islamic elements to the mosque; the minaret is flanked by 2 houses in European style, but with Chinese features (e.g. in its windows & woodwork).. all these giving the mosque a mixture of styles. Today, the tower leans about 6 degrees off centre, due to moisture seepage, shifting of bricks used in the construction of the tower, and the sandy soil on which it sits.. as our guide shared, this is Singapore’s very own “leaning tower”! 😅 Masjid Hajjah Fatimah was gazetted as a national monument in 1973. 👍🏻😊 . . #jmtvllog #exploresg #exploresingapore #rediscoversg #rediscoversingapore #touristathome #sgheritage #sgheritagefest #shf2024 #sgyesteryears #sgyesterdays #yesteryears #yesterdays #sgthosewerethedays #thosewerethedays #masjidhajjahfatimahsingapore .

.. went on a heritage walk at #kamponggelam & #masjidsultan to enrich myself of #sgheritage 👣😊 Kampong Gelam — a neighbourhood & ethnic enclave in the Malay-Muslim quarter of Singapore — was the home of Malay royalty for 180 years! It was a hub for thousands of Haj pilgrims from across the region setting out for Mecca each year. Prior to British colonisation, Kampong Gelam was home to the Malay aristocracy of Singapore. It became prominent & more populous after the signing of a treaty between the British East India Company, Sultan Hussein Shah of Johor and Temenggong Abdul Rahman in 1819. During the colony’s early history, Kampong Gelam was designated for the Sultan and his household, as well as the Malay & Arab communities, many of whom were merchants. The 2nd half of the 19th century saw the rapid growth of immigrant communities in Kampong Glam, initially from Sumatra, and later from other parts of Indonesia and Malaya. This resulted in the setting up of different kampongs, like Kampong Malacca, Kampong Java & Kampong Bugis. By the early 20th century, commercial activities in Kampong Gelam had expanded, and new shop-houses & residential buildings were built to accommodate more immigrant settlers. This also resulted in some of the Arab communities moving out to other areas like Joo Chiat, Tanglin & Bukit Tunggal (Dunearn), and similarly the Malay communities to Geylang Serai & Kampong Eunos. Today, beyond being known as a vibrant cultural district full of street art, cafes & chilled vibe, Kampong Gelam still retains strong ties to its native Malay & Muslim community, and especially Masjid Sultan (aka Sultan Mosque), which remains a major landmark & congregation point for Singapore Muslims. . . #jmtvllog #exploresg #exploresingapore #rediscoversg #rediscoversingapore #touristathome #sgheritage #sgheritagefest #shf2024 #sgyesteryears #sgyesterdays #yesteryears #yesterdays #sgthosewerethedays #thosewerethedays #kampongglam #kampungglam #kampongglamheritagetrail #masjidsultansingapore .

.. went on a heritage walk at #masjidjamae to enrich myself of #sgheritage 👣😊 Jamae Mosque is one of Singapore’s earliest, with its history dating back nearly 200 year ago to 1826, when it was established by the Chulias. These were Tamil Muslims from South India, who came to Singapore mostly as traders & money changers. The mosque has been at its current location since its establishment, even after it was reconstructed between 1830 and 1835, and it definitely stands out in the predominantly Chinese location of Chinatown! The mosque is flanked by 2 7-storey minarets topped by onion domes, and a miniature 4-storey palace façade with tiny doors & cross-shaped windows. In the mosque compound are a covered foyer, the main prayer hall, and an ancillary prayer hall. It also contains a shrine to an early local Muslim religious leader. The mosque’s architectural style reflects that of 1830s Singapore. While the entrance gate is distinctively South Indian, the 2 prayer halls & the shrine are in Neo-Classical style. This uniqueness made it a well-photographed landmark on many a postcard.. 📸😊 Masjid Jamae was gazetted as a national monument in 1974. 👍🏻😊 . . #jmtvllog #exploresg #exploresingapore #rediscoversg #rediscoversingapore #touristathome #sgheritage #sgheritagefest #shf2024 #sgyesteryears #sgyesterdays #yesteryears #yesterdays #sgthosewerethedays #thosewerethedays #masjidjamaechulia #masjidjamaesingapore .

My current work situation means I am not home in St John's very often, so I have to make an effort to enjoy the things this city has to offer when I can 💗 🫶 This week, I was fortunate to be able to make time for Afternoon Tea at @therooms_nl - one of my favourite things to do in St John's! 🫖 🫶 This tasty event occurs on Wednesdays, 3 pm - 6 pm .. so I was also fortunate to have a friend with a day off and flexibility to join me 🥰 🫶 This is not a year-round offering... May 15th will be the last chance before the summer! So if you are in or around St John's, enjoy tea and tasty foods, you should definitely check this out while you can! 😋 🫶 Every time I go to tea at the cafe in The Rooms, I also think... I really need to visit The Rooms more often 🤔 It has been too long since I explored the exhibits there, and it really is a wonderful museum. 💗 🫶 Fun fact: There is an art installation outside one of the exhibits that I contributed to. 😁 🫶 #ExploreNL #StJohns #TheRooms #AfternoonTea #TouristAtHome #YYT

Enjoyed a special visit with my sister and grand nephew @zaydenzekh this past week. Played super tourists and went to the zoo, the American Indian Museum, the White House, the newly renovated Air and Space Museum, and the Botanic Gardens. Also ate at the bustling Old Ebbit Grill and spent time with fam. 🥰 Favorites? Zayden loved the zoo, the kid's space at the American Indian Museum and the Botanic Gardens. Not sure about Katy's - maybe hanging out with Zayden? I loved seeing the baby gorilla at the zoo and the 8 foot tall super stinky corpse flower at the Botanic Garden. It's the biggest in the world and getting ready to bloom! 🌸 #touristathome #springinthedmv

Lau Pa Sat (literally “old market”) is the Hokkien Chinese dialect pronunciation of “pasar” in Malay (or “bazaar” in Persian). This year, Lau Pa Sat marks its 130th year (since 1894), at its current site. And so, i headed there to be in the thick of the celebrations. While there & looking up at the centre of the market, you will be able to see the chiming clock, imported from Switzerland, which continues to operate today, The clock tower was installed in 1991, with a set of Carillon producing Chinese, Malay & Indian melodies., and 23 bronze bells struck by a jacquemart (figure of a bell striker).. nice! 👍🏻😘 . . #jmtvllog #exploresg #exploresingapore #rediscoversg #rediscoversingapore #touristathome #sgheritage #sgyesteryears #sgyesterdays #yesteryears #yesterdays #sgthosewerethedays #thosewerethedays #sgstreetart #streetart #sgmural #mural #yipyewchongmural #yipyewchong #laupasat #130thanniversary #fromshorelinetoskyline .

This year, Lau Pa Sat marks its 130th year (since 1894), at its current site. Celebrating this milestone is the unveiling of a new 10m mural by local mural artist & painter (Yip Yew Chong), as well as a range of merchandise by local illustrator (Ah Guo). The mural pays tribute to the 19th century Lau Pa Sat, which started out as a fish market by the sea. The mural showcases a transition of Lau Pa Sat from fish market to food market, as depicted by seafood vendors (on the left), and Satay Street with towering skyscrapers behind (on the right).. nice! 👍🏻😘 . . #jmtvllog #exploresg #exploresingapore #rediscoversg #rediscoversingapore #touristathome #sgheritage #sgyesteryears #sgyesterdays #yesteryears #yesterdays #sgthosewerethedays #thosewerethedays #sgstreetart #streetart #sgmural #mural #yipyewchongmural #yipyewchong #laupasat #130thanniversary #fromshorelinetoskyline .

Lau Pa Sat (literally “old market”) is the Hokkien Chinese dialect pronunciation of “pasar” in Malay (or “bazaar” in Persian). This year, Lau Pa Sat marks its 130th year (since 1894), at its current site. According to Mr Wiki.. its history started in 1824, when it was built due to relocation of an existing fish market from the south bank of Singapore River to Telok Ayer. It was built on the shore with part of its structure extended out to the sea, so waste from the market may be washed away by the tides and produce can be loaded or unloaded directly from boats via jetties. However, the structure proved to be too weak and in danger of collapse, even with multiple repairs done over the immediate years. Finally, it was decided to rebuild the market at the same site, but twice larger. In 1838, an octagonal building with ornamental columns at the entrance was completed. It stood at the same site for over 40 years, until it was demolished when land was reclaimed on Telok Ayer Bay. Construction of a new market on the newly reclaimed land, which the current market sits now, completed in 1894. The new building had the same octagonal shape, and used cast-iron pillars for support. By the early 1970s, the area around Telok Ayer Market had transformed into Singapore’s major commercial & financial district, and a wet market was deemed not suitable for the area. In 1972, the market was converted into a hawker centre. In 1986, the market was closed and taken apart to allow construction of a new train line underneath. The market was reconstructed in the late 1980s, once train works were completed. In 1991, the market reopened to a new name (“Lau Pa Sat”), complete with a festival market, a modern food court, and an entertainment centre.. nice! 👍🏻😘 . . #jmtvllog #exploresg #exploresingapore #rediscoversg #rediscoversingapore #touristathome #sgheritage #sgyesteryears #sgyesterdays #yesteryears #yesterdays #sgthosewerethedays #thosewerethedays #sgstreetart #streetart #sgmural #mural #yipyewchongmural #yipyewchong #laupasat #130thanniversary #fromshorelinetoskyline .
