Some photos of the artefacts which got damaged as they were uncared for and chucked away at some corner and near the toilet without protection. Such disregard and disrespect for our artefacts forced us to reclaim whatever artefacts that could be salvaged. It is a normal practice for museums and galleries to take out insurance on the items loaned to them. However, we were informed that no compensation will be given for damages done to our artefacts. My uncle Abdul Latiff bin Jofrie (standing extreme left) has left us this morning. He was the beloved father of my cousins Rashidah and Wahidah. A kind, soft-spoken man who was a Boy Scout and who had studied in a mercantile school. I wrote about him in my Gedung Kuning book. Please say a little prayer for him. Sampai jumpa lagi, Wak Latiff; till we meet again. . ps. Uncle Abdullah or Wak Lah is one of the trustees who supported my idea of setting up the 'Haji Yusoff Memorial Museum'. Unfortunately, Wak Latiff was unable to see the museum. . pps. When Wak Latiff was small, this jahat (evil) granduncle asked him to buy beer and cigarettes for him. Wak Latiff refused. Granduncle was furious and slapped Wak Latiff so hard that it affected his eardrum. Excited when a dealer offered me a 1948 issue of Straits Times Pictures, an annual published by The Straits Times Press, Singapore. I gingerly flipped though the pages and, lo and behold, saw a group picture of my grandpa (wearing jacket), grand uncles & their younger generation (Mom was only 9, & featured in another picture) celebrating Hari Raya at our family residence, Gedung Kuning, in Kampong Gelam. When my mango tree in Gedung Kuning was cut down, one of the reasons given was that it would damage Gedung Kuning. According to the arborist, my mango tree was “overall healthy”; so why was the tree killer so afraid that the lone tree with lean trunk could cause harm to the majestic building? If we go by that reasoning, then we should cut down all trees along roads and buildings, n’est pas? We can’t stop the forces of nature to cause accidents like the 8 March incident at Kampong Gelam. But we can do our best to appreciate nature and preserve what little greenery we have. This month, we celebrate the 10th anniversary of ‘The Mango Tree’ book. My friend called it the ‘revenge book’. I say, let’s kill them with kindness or better, with a book whose words can cut deeply than the knife.
